Meghan Markle had so many near-wins when it came to her fashion choices. In today's Fashion Edition we are taking a look at outfits that had high potential and what exactly took them from fab to drab so that you don't make the same mistakes. One of these could have been SO great, but what ruined it?
I'm also sharing some of the best techniques stylists use to define the waistline. If you have a boxy frame, want to get more of an hourglass shape through your clothes, or simply like outfits that create more of a waistline, these tricks are for you! Plus, they're easy to shop for in everyday clothing stores once you know what to look for.

Wearing heals to a polo match is a giant No No - not for fashion reasons, but because any holes in the grass can cause a horse to trip, hurting horse and/or rider. When I was a kid, my aunt dated a polo player, and between plays, the kids would be sent onto the field to push any clumps of dirt back into the holes to smooth the field out.
Totally agree! It looked so odd at a polo match. I also didn’t like the heels she wore when she was out to lunch with Gloria.
It's the perfect excuse to pull out a wedge heel.
Exactly, 'treading in the divots' in England is usually done by female spectators. I've never seen anyone wear heels at a polo match 🙄

OH my!!! I came to say the same (except the horse bit that I just learned) but I cringed just thinking her heels were digging in the grass. Better to wear wedges imo

In the South we call those shorts a “split skirt”. But nowhere in the world, in my opinion, tall skinny heels don’t go with shorts. A wedge or flats would have been more appropriate.
In the UK we call them SKORTS for skirt/shorts . I actually think the clothes she wore in Australia, and those areas , were absolutely the worst !! Miles of material, while trying to project pregnant belly ...honestly ...
The Polo scene was the most embarrassing scene I've seen in a long time. Who inserts themselves in team photos in the center no less, when one is not part of the team?
Why didn't her husband push her away or gently remove her explaining how inappropriate it was for her to be in a male policy team photo, no need for a suitcase girl! So cringe it was hard to watch except for the embarrassing amusement value!!! This vile me me me me person is a compete psycho!
Because Catherine did it in the past, so she wanted to recreate that. She’s clearly jealous of everything Catherine does.
I agree with all your observations. Except the last dress. I agree the dress looked flattering on her. The shoes though. Ankle straps visually shorten her lower leg area and give a faux shape to her scrawny ankles and chicken legs/calves. She has an unfortunate body shape. Unfortunately it won't improve with age. Im a petie hourglass with a defined waistline. Now that im 47 I've noticed im gaining all over more. I admit i weigh 20 pounds more than I did in my 30s. So perhaps that is it. Anyhoo perimenapaus and menopause thickens our waistline. I am 5'4 135 pounds, slightly short waisted as well. With broad shoulders. Before my breast augmentation I looked more pear but the implants gave me a more hourglass shape. I do regret going so large with the implants. 500cc's. At the time I got them really big fake breasts were in style. It's been a blessing in some ways. My underarm back fat is no longer visible because of them. It also gave me the opportunity to gain weight. I always felt I needed to be underweight to balance out my small breasts. I cant stand Meghan markle, but I do feel bad for her terrible body shape. She is so awkward. Physically and socially

They didn’t even win the trophy. They used it as a prop and people thought they were the winners and that Markle was presenting it. A few years earlier, when William’s team played polo there and won, Princess Catherine presented the trophy.
The facial expressions from Harry and the guy on her other side are at such odds with her super giddy clapping and smiling while trying to squeeze through to the front.

Messy, sloppy and disgusting for the kind of money, Charles & Hawwy spent on her. One wear and it’s trash! She can’t be bothered to wear or re-wear any outfit by changing it up! Guess she’s too lazy!
@@tonistark4169 She was filming commercials fro Reitman's clothing shops in Canada. She demanded the props department get her a $1000 plus pair of shoes, then took them with her after the shoot was over. She was photographed wearing those shoes while on some royal walkabout. No shame at all.

This interested me because, like Meghan, I have long arms and legs and a short torso. It is a shape that’s hard to dress, and the high-waisted trend of the last 5 - 6 years is a nightmare! The waistbands come up over my boobs. I NEED a mid rise just to look “normal.”
I would never have chosen any part of that polo outfit, but honestly I didn’t even notice at first because of the tsunami of secondhand embarrassment I felt over the trophy disaster. 🤦🏼♀️
@rebeccaluallenwalker1783 I am totally with you. I have a very similar figure to you and those high waists come to right under my boobs. Believe it or not a low rise comes slightly low to my natural waist - perfect for balancing out my short waist. I've had to resort to having my trousers and jeans made for me by a seamstress.

I have the same shape and used to wear A line and drop-waist dresses as those flattered me. I have trouble finding those dress styles in stores or in catalogs today.
Maybe a pencil type style skirt wouldve suited best , she just looked crap and acted crappy 😪
@@kimberlyevers7031 Right? Same. In fact, I’ve kind of learned to avoid any dress, jumpsuit, etc. that has any kind of defined waist - gathers, sash, elastic - I just know it’s going to hit me wrong and emphasize the worst thing about my body.
The shorts for lunch with Gloria Steinem looked like she could have gotten them at The Gap or J Crew for a fraction of the price. It's crazy that it's designer and cost that much for things that are so basic. It's like she spends to remind all of us of how rich she now is, and that isn't a good look.
She probably didn't pay for them. She probably requested a designed provide them to her, then sold them online the minute she took them off.

I honestly believe that flaunting the price tag IS her main focus - so looking awful or not is less of a concern for her as it generates the media coverage that she craves .. good or bad coverage is the same to her just so long as she is in everyone’s face.

Meghan gets her fashion ideas from movies, the green Common Wealth disaster outfit, Scarlett's green curtain dress, Gone With the Wind; Actually, the pink South Park number, going to the Wilke's BBQ, Gone With the Wind; polo polka dots, Pretty Woman. My favorite, black outfit with pointy hat, Wizard of Oz. I could go on. Great fashion advice, by the way.

@@janderson5224 I wished she'd paid attention when she watched Cinderella. Ella spent years doing all the dirty jobs for her stepmother & step sisters without any complaint. She didn't play "capture the prince" but let him find her. And the prince was so kind. He could have done a cattle call and make the women all try on the glass slipper in public, but he went house to house, so no one had to witness any of the women failing to fit into the shoe.
I’m glad you mentioned about social situations we regret and make sure to not doing again. But I don’t think Meghan gets embarrassed. Things she does are some of the things some teens might do in high school. I get second hand embarrassment.

Perhaps one of the problems with the black maternity skirt, with the “awkward” slit, is that M has an ungainly walking style, tending toward much-too-lengthy strides (possibly to always position herself ahead of H?). I’ve noticed this also often makes her heels look too high and ill-proportioned for her height. I’ve also noticed that she frequently stands with her legs apart (eek) ~ and all these undainty habits in walking/standing contribute to a general lack of femininity in her overall look!

I agree - she stands like a man; very unfeminine. Another thing that doesn't help her is her wearing contrasting belts which make her lack of a defined waist worse. I too have a boxy figure, and I rarely wear belts, and when I do, they match the color of the dress or slacks to lessen its effect.
I think the greatest problem with that skirt is that the front pieces cross over, left to the right side of the skirt, right to the left side of the skirt. It adds fabric at the waist/belly and creates an odd pull because it is straight/tulip cut. Had the skirt been more flowy and fuller I think it would work a little better.
I think she considers herself well versed in fashion, but seems to find expensive pieces that just look odd on her. Her natural style seems to be jeans, flats, t-shirt and short waist jacket.
Well wearing 4" heels as she was pregnant was awkward enough, but I suspect she wanted to wear those shoes come hell or high water. The outfit just didn't fit her well. Period.
Totally agree! She takes very long strides (usually in very high heels), which makes her hip area rock back and forth.
Yes, she does stand like a man! I hade see so many photos of her and her legs are abnormally separated. So odd especially in a dress.
For a self proclaimed independent female, she is extremely clingy. Her status is because of who she married.
Harry’s royalty doesn’t compensate for her loose woman vibe. She prefers sexy to chic but looks like a floosy. And what is it with the white shirts with rolled up sleeves. They look like school uniform and she looks like she’s about to tackle the washing up. Not at all attractive. Reminds me of my youth just post war. The only clothes we had were school uniform and we tried to adapt them into something fun and attractive, probably looking like what we were, kids trying to look grown up.
What makes everything worse is that she doesn’t seem have a drop of elegance or poise - the way she walks, mannerisms…

I have been a Polo Player since Childhood. I have gotten comments on that Tramp’s Behaviour. NO ONE goes on stage, except the Players. NO ONE touches the Prize. I was getting massive complaints regarding her behaviour. Unbelievably, she tried to copy Pretty Woman at the Polo Club. She shoved her tongue down the Players Throats. She was carrying the Trophy around. EVERYONE WAS HORRIFIED. Information, regarding H was sent to the Polo Community. It had been hidden from EVERYONE and Staff to not speak regarding H attacking the Horses and beating them. One pregnant Mare died. He is banned from the California Polo Club. His attacks in the UK were covered up.
Yeah, she really wanted one of those boxes didn't she? Seems to me these are 2 grew up with no one ever saying no to them...leaving all of us to suffer through them as ill-behaved adults. And I've seen a video of him having a temper tantrum (as an adult!) at a polo match. Interesting you mentioned the horse. While he didn't hit the horse, I remember worrying about the horse's safety around this guy.

Regarding those navy Bermudas with the white shirt - the major style solecism is the high heels with shorts. Stylish, chic ladies never ever wear high heels together with shorts.

The polo game suit--absolutely no one dresses like that outside during the day in So Cal--no one. People wear hats because it is sunny, and straw hats, but more appropriate for outdoors and walking around. This is where everyone eats tacos and goes to the dog beach, young and old. LIved there forever and I have never seen anyone dress like that during the day for an outdoor game when it is hot. She is from LA--I do not know what she is thinking. Kate looks great all the time. Those cute tretorn sneakers where the logo matches the blush jacket...perfection. I'm never into clothes or royals. I got here on pure markle hate and Kate is already a queen.

With the white shirt and black skirt moment I think MM was trying for a Sharon Stone moment (1998 Oscars). Of course, she doesn't have Stone's tall frame and well-balanced proportions, nor Stone's insouciance, so it was a miss (which had nothing to do with her pregnancy). I think she studies '90s icons like Carolyn Bessette Kennedy and Stone, but she's working with harder proportions and she's not, as the French say, easy in her skin (bien dans sa peau) like those women.
I wonder if she is also studying Catherine. Again, wrong body type. She thinks she can do it on her own, but she isn't quite able to pull it off.

It looks like Meghan has a hard time to get a cohesive look. It looks like there is always something off and I don't get why. There is a video of her on youtube where she talks about the importance of a tailor. It looks like she forgot that when she entered Royal life and that she never learned the importance of the right undergarments. But she looked good on Suits, so it looks like when other people dress her and decide for her what to wear it looks good, but she doesn't know how to dress when she does it herself, but she thinks that does.

Polo match - High stilettos are definitely wrong for a polo match. Those wide shorts make her look even boxier.

Waistlines - if you don’t have a defined waistline, stop using strings and bows around them.
I'm a thin hourglass but I use my natural waistline, anything else looks odd on me. I'll never forget the time I bought a gorgeous drop waist dress, omg it looked like a sack on me.
I'm also short but I found a good tailor a few years ago it saved me so much time

I immediately thought of the polka dotted outfit that Julia Roberts wore to the polo match in pretty woman it just reminded me of what roberts looked. Tall and elegant. Megan just kind of well, she tried. I know how she tries to mimic others fashion. Than, trying to find her own particular style. And she does love her Romcons

No, nobody looks good in a paper bag. The great thing about Catherine, though, is that she knows how to dress for her tall, slim shape, she listens to advice, and she gets her clothes tailored.
9:35 Markle’s appearance at the polo event was comparable to an episode of “Keeping Up Appearances.” Much like Hyacinth Bucket (Patricia Routledge), Markle appeared ridiculously overdressed, attempted to insert herself to be the center of attention, and it back-fired on her. Life imitates art!

Great tips! I have the boxy torso thing, too. I don't think the super high skinny heels help her look, either. They add length and skinniness to already long, skinny legs. Those cut off jeans Katherine had on would look good on Meghan because they'd make her legs look shorter. One observation: some of these fashion blunders were likely created by cheap clothes. Like the white blouse over the black maternity skirt that was gaping at the neck. That's how an inexpensive blouse - I'm guessing that's rayon with some elastane in it - wears. It stretches awkwardly and doesn't hold a press so the collar wilts like that. She's still buying clothes off the rack, and it isn't working.
I doubt it was an inexpensive white shirt. I also don't think anything less than a designer label would be allowed to touch her skin. She wore a white Givenchy shirt at Wimbledon with that awful pleated skirt, and it was a disaster. Unfortunately for the designers she chooses, she can make one of their designs look very poorly constructed, and cheap. She doesn't seem to have the sensibilities needed to make an outfit work for her. I think expensive, designer labels, and copying Princess Diana are all considered when making a clothing choice.
She makes everything look cheap because she doesn't know what she's doing, won't take advice, and doesn't have a realistic view of her height and body shape. She's also obsessed with designer labels, whether it looks good or not. True nouveau riche.
That whole outfit was custom made for her by Givenchy.

I know the white shirt is supposed to be oversize, yet the fit is as poor as the fit on her wedding gown.

If I wear a dress I definitely wear a slip and I've noticed people skip it. Big mistake. You can see through your dress and [horrors] the wind blow it right into your crotch. Ilove love love Catherine but if you watch the prince and princess walking the children their first day of school you see it. Forgive me!
A slip always makes a dress sit better on the body, especially when wearing less expensive material it stops any kind of clinging.

I LOVE wearing a slip! I grew up in the 50's and 60s, and we all wore slips. Plus my Mom was a seamstress, so we didn't dare NOT wear a slip. It makes a huge difference by helping how your skirts and dresses lay on you. Plus we had such pretty ones. I've always sought out beautiful vintage slips to wear, and have a lovely collection to choose from.
Shorts/culottes with stilettos just seems and looks wrong to me, particularly at a sports event. If Meghan were shopping or lunching, I might view them differently. Thank you, you are very observant!

I enjoy your fashion advice and suggestions for looking the best. As for Megan, she is a fashion disaster and a good choice for pointing out what not to do. With all her money she should be able to afford a stylist, but, her narcissistic personality prohibits her from taking direction from anyone.

Hi gal pal. Can you please do side by sides of M and Diana? I think M tries to be statuesque like Diana. Thus, the rows of buttons, the cape dresses, the shift dresses. Instead, M looks like SpongeBob!
I think Harry’s wife is totally out of her element and doesn’t understand the assignment. She used to dress in a really tacky, cheap in appearance way… so when she married up, she was up-jumped fashion wise and she was just so lost on what to wear. She doesn’t dress appropriately. I don’t know why when she has all the money and resources and Harry’s connections, why she can’t get it together and dress well.

I just looked up her wardrobe on Suits, so she can clearly listen to stylists but she didn't want to follow the royal style rules. I think the best outfits I ever saw her in was that green leather skit and green top. It looks like it could have been taken from her Suits character closet and if she had stuck to those types of clothes then she would be an actual style icon instead of wannabe style icon. Dress impeccably and people remember the woman; dress shabbily and people remember the dress. A fitting quote for Meghan from the Queen of all style: CoCo Chanel.
To me, the issue with Meghan’s clothing is fit and choice of fabric. She always looks rumpled.
The pregnancy outfit was ghastly
She tried to copy Carolyn Bessette Kennedy’s Yochi outfit straight down to spreading apart the collar. On Carolyn it was stunning, on MM it was ridiculous.

Drop-waists seemed to be pretty fashionable in the 80s. Meghan probably thinks they’re too dowdy and dated, but honestly there are some cute modern ones out there and she would so good in them.

Well, my Beebs, hurrah!, Coronation Day tomorrow. Plan to be up at 4:30 ack emma. Now then the polo outfit really did it for me. You do a great job on the technical details but her BIGGEST problem is, in my opinion, that she does what I call 'oppositional dressing'. She asks herself, 'will people notice me?', and 'will they notice me first?'. Then when people say she looks like a dog's dinner, it's 'I'm too sophisticated, too with it', 'too above them'! That black hat & glasses both drew attention to her pointed nose and pointed chin, very witch like, which I hadn't even noticed before. She was overdressed, look at the people around her & she kept the other women off the podium with some random, trumped-up reason I can't even thank God, remember! Those shoes were too dressy, at sporting events, we're not talking about Ascot here, the rules are sandals, wedges or flats to keep your heels from digging into the grass. I've NEVER seen her get a pair of shorts right but then see 'will they notice me first' rule. Had she worn the red/white polka dot dress& forgone the Olive Oyle sandals she could have been so much more attractive. Her behavior, well I don't want to be sniffy, I mean snippy, but it was unusual in the extreme for a 42 yr. old woman ANYWHERE.
She was never pregnant. When she was at an even in the UK her moon bump fell to her knees. It was hilarious 😂. She had on a purple dress that was form fitting. You could clearly see it. 😂😂😂

Yup! And if you notice, her performance outfits were always one-piece dresses (mini, of course) that would skim, not cling to her body. If she wore pants, the blouse was open really low and the pants would cut off at or above the ankle to shorten the leg. The blessing of the short torso is that our legs are usually great. LOL

I'm short everywhere. Agree about sleeves, can make short girls look to dowdy. I shorten blouse sleeves by sewing about a 3" to 4 " piece of skinny elastic, I stretch it and sew it on to the seam from top of sleeve towards the elbow. Then I resew the button so the cuff fits my wrist perfectly. Makes the sleeves poof a bit. GAME CHANGER for me. Also I sew some sleeves to a rolled up place I want them, and sew them there just like you described. Thx for great ideas.

I was raised to understand that tight is tacky. Lauren Bacall’s mother told her to go bigger rather than smaller, looser clothes look richer! I don’t get the trend of pregnant women wearing skintight clothes. To me it somehow shows a disrespect for the little Miracle in there. And basically it’s tacky tacky tacky.
Meghan has abnormally long and skinny legs and I totally agree that she's very short-wasted. She does the opposite of what you're recommending. She tries to make her legs look longer and it's a terrible mistake.
The outfit she used when she was with Gloria Steinem was horrible. Made her legs look like sticks and midriff even wider than usual.

I'm glad that you have explained this as I have trouble adjusting to my new body. I had an hourglass figure before and if you saw me from the front, you would say that I still have that hourglass figure, but if you looked at me from the side, you'd see that my abdomen is even wider than my breastline. Due to a medical emergency and surgery, you could describe my body as 'thick' not wide. How can someone fix this to make me NOT look so thick. I wear clothing that hides my mid-rift if you get what I mean. What would you recommend? Thanks for your channel. Really informative and also very confirming of what I thought too, regarding Rachel (MM).BTW, seeing MM wearing those gladiator sandals with bunions, to me anyway, is not very flattering. I’ve been thinking the same thing! I’m short 5’2 with normal torso but short legs. 4 kids later, and my stomach sticks out, and makes clothes fit funny.

@@denisehenry3427 That's stupid AND cruel. When you're short and have several children, especially several, your abdominal muscles are often stretched beyond repair. My abdominal muscles were actually separated horizontally, leaving a permanent indentation around my middle. Exercise doesn't help, either. I barely noticed the indentation until I started pilates; toning my midsection just made it a lot more obvious. So until you've experienced several full-term pregnancies as a petite woman, you have no right to make comments since you're ignorant.

She was copying a look that Carolyn Bessette Kennedy wore. Who was 6 ft tall with a long neck and was not pregnant. Meghan looked utterly ridiculous.
Beats me why she wears belts at all on many of her dresses. A straight shift type dress doesn't need one, at least for her body type.
I never released she was caboose heavy, but that see-through skirt really accentuates it.

The pose Meghan was going for with the polo players, was under the main trophy. Princess Catherine did a pose like that with William's polo team where Catherine looked great. M's copy was not so great.

This is such an interesting video. I too, have the "bar fridge" body shape going for me. I cannot wear dresses because of the way they hang on me I end up looking like a tank. Dark seperate tops and bottoms work best for my shape. If I wear a belt, it has crept up to my boobs by the end of the night 😂

The polo outfit looked like a child playing dress up, and the white/black pregnancy outfit-i get what she was going for, but she failed. The skirt sat weirdly on her, like cut off her belly. It’s mind blowing that she considered herself a fashionista, yet can’t dress for her figure, or at all, to save her life.
I really want to see how other attendees dresses themselves in that polo match. She really was trying too hard and failed

She never, never wears the right undergarments! Wrong shoes, wrong size is second. Wrong clothes rounds out the list.
MM too often wears clothes that seem to smother her. Too chunky or bulky in some ways. She does not have a long torso or much of a waist line. And she seems to orient too much around what she has so little to work with.
Instead of the gladiator shoes, I think she could have worn a nice 1 inch flat with covered toes.
I have trouble finding pleated skirts that don’t add bulk to my waist and tummy.
The math is easy here: If Catherine WOULD NOT wear it, then DO NOT wear it. If the Meg DOES wear it, DO NOT wear it. I watched the video and in my head I could not help but picturing Catherine wearing the outfits the Meg wore, and it was just impossible. She wouldn't. She just wouldn't.
