  • Yeah...it's long. I didn't plan it that way.
But hell...if there are going to be 50 videos of people hating on the flick...I might as well compensate by making the longest video of someone actually Defending this Underrated film.
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is a 2008 American science fiction adventure film.
It is the fourth installment in the Indiana Jones series created by George Lucas and directed by Steven Spielberg.
Released nineteen years after the previous film, the film acknowledges the age of its star Harrison Ford by being set in 1957.
It pays tribute to the science fiction B-movies of the era, pitting Indiana Jones against Soviet agents-led by Irina Spalko (Cate Blanchett)-searching for a telepathic crystal skull.
Indiana is aided by his former lover Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen) and their son Mutt Williams (Shia LaBeouf). Ray Winstone, John Hurt and Jim Broadbent are also part of the supporting cast.
Screenwriters Jeb Stuart, Jeffrey Boam, Frank Darabont, and Jeff Nathanson wrote drafts before David Koepp's script satisfied the producers.
Shooting began on June 18, 2007, and took place in various locations including New Mexico; New Haven, Connecticut; Hawaii; and Fresno, California, as well as on sound stages in Los Angeles.
To keep aesthetic continuity with the previous films, the crew relied on traditional stunt work instead of computer-generated stunt doubles, and cinematographer Janusz Kamiński studied Douglas Slocombe's style from the previous films.
The film premiered at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival on May 18, 2008, and was released worldwide on May 22, 2008 to generally positive reviews from critics, although audience reception was more mixed.
It was a financial success, grossing over $786 million worldwide, becoming the franchise's highest-grossing film when not adjusted for inflation, and the second highest-grossing film of 2008.

Great job defending one of the most underrated films and sequels in recent memory. A fun adventure in the vein of the classic b-movies from the 50's. I too didn't mind Shia, Harrison was great as always as Indy, It was great to see Karen Allen again, Spielberg's direction was full of energy and fun, the aliens aspect of the plot never bothered me since I knew Indy 4 was going to have a plot heavily based on the 50's b-movies of the time period that were full of Aliens and Mind Control. I didn't mind the villains being Russians either or Cate Blanchett's performance. And the Nuke The Fridge scene I thought was fun. And not any less realistic than anything else in the previous films in the franchise. Which it wasn't realistic at all.
Yes. I don't care for the CGI monkeys or Gophers. But that's on screen for less than a minute. I also didn't care for Ray Winstone's character that much. And yes. The film does have a surprising amount of practical effects and models used in the film. That I took notice of when I saw it in the theater. And I had a blast when I saw it with my parents. And it was one of my favorite films of the year. I don't get the "worst film ever" criticisms for this film. I didn't get them when the movie came out and I still don't get them now.

I liked it, still do. It's another opportunity to kick around in Indy's universe. Absolutely loved the first 75% of the movie. Doomtown, the WWII hero references, the US based campus scenes and that arrival in Peru, my God, that scene where they're both just standing there after getting to their destination is one of the greatest Indiana Jones shots ever put to film.
I love how the bomb and UFO bookend the film.
I love the Charles Stanforth character and the conversations they have.
I love the Red Scare elements and the Soviet psychic research stuff.
I love the cheeky Nazca Lines shot.
I love the lore around the Conquistadors.
I love the rocket sled sequence.
Overall I think it's a great way to ease Indy into the post atomic age using pulp elements. I'm excited to see the next one so we get two set in this era, I think that'll help ease the difference between the 30's ones and the new set.
There are only 3 things that bug me in this movie, the jeep straddling fencing (especially the groin hits), Marion's expression before and after the waterfalls sequence (and that weird rubber tree) and the aliens merging together. But then again there's some janky stuff in Temple of Doom too so there you go.

I appreciate your arguments, but I kept being taken out of the movie by three things:
    1. The fake Russian accent (Why not cast an unknown with a real Russian accent?)
    2. Too much nostalia shit.
    3. CGI that's supposed to impress (ants, UFO)
Not to mention the fridge scene. Man.... That was worse than the rubber boat in 2.
Other than that, it's all good.

A LOT of peeps don't realize this movie is a product of 1930's-40's movie serials combined with 1950's B-movies.. being a fan of BOTH I got what they wanted to do with this movie.. I agree that it's the weakest film of the other three BUT I still had fun with it!

This movie doesnt rise up to the standard of the first 3, but it gets way more hate than it deserves. It certainly is far from "one of the worst sequels ever". Its not really until the jungle sequence that the movie starts to kind of fall apart. But even that has the great ant sequence. One of the best parts is Indy fighting the Russian henchman in the middle of the big ants.
Loved the Force Awakens bashing. Anyone who craps on the Star Wars Prequels and praises The Force Awakens doesn't get to complain about remakes.

    • @HugoSoup57
      @HugoSoup57 Před 3 lety +1

The Force Awakens is a significantly better made movie than the prequels, I’m sorry, but it just is. And I don’t even hate the prequels either, but they are absolutely very flawed movies. Yes, TFA is a bit too similar and a rehash of a New Hope, but overall it’s a really well-made sequel and the fans who hated and called it a poorly made movie are wrong. I think The Force Awakens is easily one of the better SW movies.

KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL is an absolutely EXCELLENT film... and is vastly underrated and criminally maligned... If one can not acknowledge that, then it is THEIR loss, they are really missing out, and I am truly sorry for them... I am forever dumbstruck at the unwarranted and ignorant criticism and hatred that this classic movie gets from naive people... If they have such a ridiculous, over-exaggerated negative reaction to THIS film, then I PRAY that that they NEVER EVER watch an "ACTUAL" bad movie... It would probably KILL them... or at least MELT their FACE off!
CRYSTAL SKULL is a heartfelt love letter to the Sci-fi alien invasion and Cold War paranoia B-movies of the 1950's... just as the first three were love letters to the cliffhanger B-movie serials of the 1930's (and I'm sure that the upcoming new fifth movie will be a love letter to the B-movies of the 1960's... which is the time period that film will be set in... maybe it will have some "spy/secret agent" elements, which was big in 1960's B-cinema). CRYSTAL SKULL is amazing. I love every single minute of it...
Yes, EVEN the nuked fridge, the gophers, the monkeys, and the aliens... I LOVE IT ALL!
My own personal ranking of these four CLASSICS is:
#1 - RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK (10/10)
    #2 - TEMPLE OF DOOM (10/10)
#3 - KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL (9/10)
    #4 - THE LAST CRUSADE (9/10) '
(I am excited to see where "INDY 5" will eventually fall in my ranking!)
Oh, and let us not forget, as a worthy runner-up:
#5 - THE YOUNG INDIANA JONES CHRONICLES (8/10)
.(If you haven't seen this impressive and ambitious TV series, check it out!)
Side note: Just so you know where I'm coming from... I first saw RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK in the movie theatre 41 years ago ("Wow, has it been THAT long?") when it premiered in the summer of 1981... I was 14 years old then... Actually, I saw it SEVERAL times in the theatre, as well as obviously seeing the three sequels many times in the theatre when they came out, too.
And I CAN NOT WAIT until June 30th, 2023, when I will go to the movie theatre once again to see the NEW FIFTH installment of our favorite whip-cracking archeologist... I'm confident that, even without the direct participation of Lucas and Spielberg, It will still ALSO be GREAT... As Indy once said, "TRUST ME"!
Thank you so much, George Lucas, Harrison Ford, Steven Spielberg John Williams, and everyone else involved over the decades, for bringing to life one of the most ICONIC film creations of them all, and for entertaining and thrilling us time and time again for over 40 years with each new adventure!
The summer of 2023 is going to be a wild ride... so "Hold on to your potatoes"!
Because if adventure has a name... it must be INDIANA JONES.

I think Shia did a good job as Indiana Jones's son and it was nice to see Karen Allen again. But the movie to me just lacks something the first three films had. And the aliens are just silly... I know you had weird fantasy stuff in the other movies, but aliens just don't really work with Indiana Jones in my opinion. It's like a peanut butter and mustard sandwich, something just isn't right here. You don't eat peanut butter with mustard, and you don't mix Indiana Jones with aliens.

Eh no way man, The Force Awakens is a good movie and one of the better Star Wars films. Sure, the plot is a bit too similar to that of a New Hope, but it is a better made film than the prequels and KOTCS by a landslide. TFA was a good start to the Disney sequel trilogy until it went downhill, they didn’t have enough of a plan. But the trilogy actually started off well, so it wasn’t an entire trainwreck. The sequel trilogy in general wasn’t completely terrible, just very disappointing compared to what it could’ve been

  • @cockerpoodles1238
    @cockerpoodles1238 Před 4 lety

I think the problems with this film aren't even to do with the film itself, it's more to do with where it fits in the series and how it relates to the other films.
The trilogy had a very even circle feel to it....we have a first and a third film that are similar to each other but just about different enough to not be the exact same film, and a second film that provides a perfect contrast to the other two films. We get an overall picture of Indy's adventures, we establish that he has a different girlfriend all the time, that most of his adventures are like Raiders and involve the Nazis but that SOMETIMES he can actually have an adventure in more exotic territory like China and India, facing the triads and dark, satanic cults. We see the variety of allies and enemies that Indy has had.
Now, part of the reason that it was somewhat ok for Last Crusade to repeat the Raiders formula was because 1) We had a good father son dynamic between Ford and Connery and 2) We had just had Temple of Doom to provide a completely different adventure altogether. I still think Last Crusade comes dangerously close to being a retread of the first film, but it gets away with it for these reasons.
Problem with Crystal Skull is that by this time, the Raiders formula is now well and truly exhausted and we don't have Sean Connery this time, nor have we just come out of a completely different and darker entry. So the whole thing is just tired and bland. This is why I cannot understand the notion that this film is better than Temple of Doom. Temple of Doom was badly needed in the series for its world building and taking Indy into new territory, facing new enemies, having new allies, exploring the James Bond side of the character, Triads, Cults, exotic palaces, freeing enslaved children, dark magic etc....plus his redemption arc going from being a Belloq type character to being more heroic. Crystal Skull is simply yet another rehashing of a formula that really didn't need to be repeated after Raiders. Last Crusade only just got away with it, this film didn't!
Bringing Marion back was a nice idea in theory, but it undermines the whole "different lady in each film" idea and it really just makes you wonder why she wasn't the love interest throughout the whole series. Again, it breaks the evenness and consistency that the trilogy established. We as the audience could always imagine and speculate which Indy girl he would have ended up with and yes, it probably would have been Marion but we don't need another film just to clarify this for us! Riding off into the sunset having just found the grail and reunited with his father was the perfect ending, and now it's been tarnished by the fact that another film exists.
The fourth film also has nothing to do with Indy's overall character arc. In the opening of Crusade he loses the cross and learns that his boy scout ways aren't going to help him win. In Temple he goes from being ruthless and selfish to finding his heroic side again. In Raiders he is more heroic but still facing and fighting his past through Marion, Belloq etc and making things right with Marion again. Then back to Crusade, he regains the cross, then all that's left is to reconcile with his father, help his father find the grail and ride off into the sunset. The fourth film undermines even that because apparently having redeemed himself with Marion, he then went on to screw her over again......

    • @HardestTargett

Temple is supposed to take place before Raiders so he only went one story without her and the only reason he ended back up with her because he found out he had a child with her. The reason the fourth one didn’t work is because the crystal skulls didn’t look like the historical crystal skulls and the kid was swinging on vines and sword fighting on speeding jeeps. Not only did the kid’s stunts look atrocious but why would anyone ever want to see anyone other than Indy doing the action scenes. The other Indy movies didn’t have other heroes doing big action scenes.

excellent review, didnt realise you would go tgat indepth great job. imo if yiu dont like this movie you not a true indiana jones fan. this was made 20 years after after last crusade, what other sequels after 10-20 yrs turn out half good? the only negatives to me is cgi instead of practical so it blends better with the previous 3, cate blanchetts overacting baddie and a slightly underwheling climax when we see the aliens. however its still a fun popcorn entertaining flick. im looking forward to indy 5 in 2019.

The problem with the film is the 3rd act. No tension, no momentum, no style, it’s all very bland. Especially when the villian comes into
Play. The script for Crystal skull is fucking terrible.
Not even Spielberg can save it.

Not only did Rambo 4 and Crystal Skull come out in 2008 but Live Free or Die Hard came out soon before in ‘07. All a belated and to some degree underrated follow-up to a classic trilogy. Old school series revivals seemed much more promising then. It’s a shame two out of three have been tarnished with a lackluster fifth movie. Haha

I really do think the problem is; fans of this franchise, like myself; put these movies on such a high echelon. I am fortunate to see all the Indiana Jones movies at the theaters (including this one). Even though Empire Strikes Back is my favorite film of all time; the Indiana Jones trilogy is still my favorite. I digress...
I don't the movie is that *bad* on it's own, but when you tag the Indiana Jones moniker, it falls flat. Red Letter Media said it best, the overall tone is what's lacking. I kinda what equate it to the "Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome" of the franchise. It's really toned-down here. Does he even use his gun at all here?
The characters: Besides Mutt ( I actually thought Shia was the best actor here),the others are completely useless. The Mack character is just completely stupid. We already had the *turned* sidekick in Elsa - why is he here. Marian is a former shell of herself. She is the complete opposite of her Raiders' caricature.
Some other points, everything seemed like a set. I never felt like they were on location at all. And the CGI??? Besides one sequence w/ the fire ants; I'm not sure why it's even a necessity here? For a couple of animals??? Why?
The John Williams' score is probably the worst of his resume... completely unforgettable.
Even though I had my gripes, it's not that bad of a movie. Let's just say it's a solid *four* compared to the others.
I wonder sometimes if this movie was made in the early '90s; my nostalgia mindset would've changed and give it a free pass.

A trainwreck of a Indiana Jones movie . It's because of the Aliens the CGI monkey's and the period time frame of the 1950s.

Here is the deal with Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and other such 'mediocre' sequels (Ghostbusters 2 for example). Are they "Bad"? No. Do I need to spend my time watching them when I could watch a) the original or b) any other better movie ? No. Thats really it. Films like this just aren't worth my time when I can just watch Raiders, or the original Ghostbusters. Am I going to shit on them...not too much and I get why people might defend/like them...I just don't have time for sub par films when far superior ones are out there and a worth my time.

    • @HugoSoup57
      @HugoSoup57 Před 2 lety +1

The Force Awakens didn’t suck. It was a well-made film, you guys are just haters. Just because it was a rehash of a New Hope doesn’t mean it was bad. You can bash the film if you want, but you’re totally wrong. The plot is somewhat formulaic, but it has good acting, decent writing, and great visuals. TFA is a much better film than any of the prequels.

    • @HugoSoup57
      @HugoSoup57 Před 2 lety

In my opinion, anyone who defends the Crystal Skull shouldn’t have the gall to bash a far superior film like the Force Awakens. Sure, TFA wasn’t as original as Crystal Skull, but I think the execution is drastically better and anybody who says otherwise is delusional. It seems like SW fans are never satstified by anything that isn’t the OT. And to me, those people aren’t true SW fans. The Force Awakens has objectively better acting, writing, cinematography, visual effects, and character development than Crystal Skull. But hey feel entitled to your dumb opinion, I’m done talking with you toxic Star Wars fanboys.

I was born in 1983, so I didn't get to see the first three in theater either. When I went to see Kingdom, there was a couple of people dressed in full Indy gear that added to the hype and excitement. I had the fedora at that time and wish that I would have worn it. Still had alot of fun and a memorable experience.
