I raised 4 kids, buying a home and car below poverty level with no government assistance. I stretched dollars all over the place. My girls were 2 years apart and my boys only 1 year apart. I always bought new clothes for them so they were fine to hand down. No second hand stores for 100 miles anyway. Over the years of course things and income changed but thats how they changed!

The draftees now needed jobs so everyone they could retire out, they did. Anyway, 4 years of that in the late 70s without any of off grid solar etc...they have now.

My nephew had no money in college so he worked evenings at a steak house and kept a to go bag with him where he stashed food items left on the trays when he was cleaning up tables. When he got it home, he'd reheat anything others had eaten off but often items were totally untouched. He never got sick and actually felt like he was healthier than he would have been otherwise because he wasn't skipping meals.

You know, @Prepper Princess, that when folks go broke I hope they flash on the "cringe-worthy things you do" to survive. Your points may be an inspiring wake-up call. I have the utmost respect for your frugal habits.
Keep in mind that younger folks want to 'gag me with a spoon" and cringe at what I do at age 72 and what my parents and grandparents did out of self-preservation habit helped them stand me to survive. It may come in handy some day sooner than not.

You are just up my alley here.. I started a garden from scratch, after building my house. At my brothers summerhouse there is a lot of oak trees. Where I live, we do not have oak, I wanted oak, but didn´t want to spend a fortune on it, so I went for a walk with my dogs, brought a bag and a shovel and dug up a little tree. It has not grown much, as it doesnt like my elevation and hard climate, but every summer it is still producing green leaves, so hopefully it will make it. 💕 Most of my other planting is free, or next to nothing. Got cuttings for free, and saved seeds from other gardens, now I save seeds from my own garden from year to year.

The majority of trees/bushes in my 83 yr old grandmas yard she foraged and replanted in her yard. You see what sticks and what doesn’t. Her birch and pine trees have lasted the longest at around 50 years or so. She has tried with some other bushes but they didn’t get enough sunlight. She once saved a lilac bush from the dump and now like 30 years later still exists and is a huge beautiful bush, of which I have also taken shoots from and replanted around my place. I have done this with native plants, even on our property, and shuffled them around to use for landscaping. I do this with plum tree saplings and raspberry shoots. Propagate mint. Strawberries, and other perennials. I want there to be abundance of food if i need it. Some of my plants are technically edible but but don’t produce fruit because I don’t water them enough, and just act as landscape. But if need be I could actually fertilize and water them to bear fruit if it was really necessary. Ask friends for clippings or just see what grows on the side of the road. So much fun!

Absolutely no lines crossed. Years ago when I waited with other moms for our softball player girls to practice, one of the mothers would go into the woods and get thick vines to make wreaths from. Some had the audacity to roll their eyes at her, while I was simply amazed at her craftiness, use of available resources and time. Those are the people that I admire the most- people who are good stewards of whatever they have.

I wouldn't do what you did with the burger, but it reminds me of writer Frank McCourt (writer of Angela's Ashes). He grew up in extreme poverty in Ireland so he knew what hunger was. Once a student in his class dropped his lunch sandwich on the floor and threw it away. McCourt went in and got it out of the trash can and and ate it. He then explained to his class what it was like to grow up in extreme poverty and eat anything you could find just to stay alive.

Dear Princess, I have went deep in the free scraps of wood at Home Depot. Last year, I had a dislocated shoulder, still wearing a sling. But when I was that beautiful free lumber, I swooped up every single piece there. Then gave it all to my neighbour who was making a Tiki Hut bar in her back yard out of pallets. She was so grateful. Women helping women! I am currently looking for free boards to make raised beds for veg gardening and that neighbour will help me bang them together... I believe recipocity, bartering, and helping neighbours enriches our frugal lifestyle.

Oh my God this was a great video you have me making so many comments I'm sorry. But I am good at a garden but you're at the mercy of weather. Things in my garden get destroyed when there's too much rain to little rain and I grow what can grow in Arizona. But I spent a fortune over the past couple of years buying dirt and all the different products that you should mix into the dirt to make it a good healthy dirt for gardening. Yes once purchased if you keep it fertilized or make your own compost the dirt will be good forever. But to Garden is an initial investment and so if you know how to forge that would really be fantastic for frugal living

When i buy paper towels, i tear off half sheets, stack them up about 10 high, and cut them in half. This way im only using a quarter of the paper towel and not a whole half sheet. By doing this paper towels last me twice as long. I realized when i use a half sheet, i never really use the whole thing especially when eating. I usually cut up 2-3 rolls this way and just stack the mini napkins in a cabinet in the kitchen. Its the perfect size napkin that i just fold in half then use it. One roll of paper towels cut up to a quarter the size can last me at minimum 3-4 months.

We were having dinner at a local pizza place, and there was a family who left before we did, and they left most of a pizza on the table. This place makes fantastic pizza - so guess who snagged the leftovers before the table could be cleared. I felt a little weird about it, but when I had pizza the next day for lunch - it was worth it!

How I have saved money over the years, accepting a whole box of sample head and shoulders shampoo from my doctor, then putting those sample bottles into a regular size head and shoulders bottle for my kids to use, I didn't buy shampoo for my two boys for 2 years that way, to stretch out kids jeans with almost worn out knees I used iron on patches on the inside of the jeans before there was a hole, the jeans lasted to be passed down to my younger boy.
Accept any and all kids clothing for my youngest and keep my oldest clothes, I hardly bought new clothes for my youngest from birth to age 12, when my youngest was a preschooler I even passed down my oldest underwear and socks that were in still good shape, my youngest never knew.
I buy anything at a thrift store except for bras underwear and socks. When we need more towels, wash cloths, tea towels, thrift store is where I go, when you get home wash in hot setting and Detergent and your good to go for a fraction of the price,
I have watered down fabuloso and put in individual spray bottles I keep under the sink in kitchen and bathrooms, , gotta be lavender scent.
I use Kirkland brand Detergent for laundry and use just half the suggested amount to wash.
I keep everything till its dead dying and done. 28 year old oven why not, 16 year old fridge we are good, appliances do not have to be pretty as long as they work.
I decorate my home with vintage thrift items, my kitchen now has a 1970s theme, what inspired it my mom gave me her 1970 Cafe curtains for my window.
I keep clothes for ages, my oldest sweater I love is from 1998, bought it at a Columbia outlet, still love it.
I also accept free tops from my mom she doesn't want, hey saves me money.
My motto is NO shame in my El Cheapo game. I also go to thrift stores to buy birthday, anniversary, Xmas cards for 25 cents, why not lol
So Prepper Princess you are not the only one lol.....

Cut it into chunks, put it into a pot with spinach, sweet potatoes, frozen blueberries, and steel cut oats and cooked it slowly, 1/2 cup poured over her dry food gave her a nice boost to her nutrition and a bit of a treat for her.
I forage for wild strawberries, dandelion greens, and Plantain leaves (found in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Ohio). Also I forage cattails to make flour, use the stems in salads, and between the leaves is an aloe like gel that works great for burns and skin irritation. I've sourced raspberry canes in parks that the staff was ripping up as well! My parents supported a family of seven, four of us kids and my grandma. My dad when I was young was a cop and my mom was a police matron ( not sure what they’re called now - officer?). Wages weren’t great, I thought nothing of washing my hair in the sink with Tide powder detergent mixed in a cup with water, clear through high school. My little brother gave my mom a yard of fabric for Christmas one year because “Mama loves material”. The reality was that Mom had to make our clothes. Three of us were girls. I’m on the sunny side of eighty now, my husband passed away five years ago. I’m on social security. I’m needing some auto repairs, some work on the house..so I’m really pinching pennies to save enough for those things. Frugal is the way to go. I’m not suffering, nor is my dog, cat or bird. I admit I have very few clothes, and I’ve had them for years. People would be amazed. I wear jeans my fifty seven year old son wore in high school. I have no one to please but myself, I see nothing wrong with transplanting a tree or bush or flower as long as it isn’t taken from someone else. And good food should never be wasted.

When we moved we brought some of the new shoots from the raspberries and seeds from the Nanking cherries. Waiting for this spring to plant them. Also in our new backyard, there are grape hyacinth growing like weeds in the grass. In the spring I'm going to dig them up to put in the front garden (they spread a lot). We saved pumpkin seeds from our jack-o-lanterns too. I love kitchen scraps to grow as well. Seeds from bell peppers. Cut the roots off of green onions and replant them. I have onions and potatoes sprouting in my bin that will get put in the garden next summer. Last summer all of our potato plants were from the grocery store potatoes that sprouted in the cupboard.

Volunteers pick the fruit, a third goes to the homeowner, a third goes to shelters and soup kitchens, and a third is shared by the pickers. I’ve picked cherries, grapes and apples. My take, which is about a tenth of the pick, is anywhere between 20 and 75 pounds, these are small city backyards. I canned 12 quarts of apple butter. You're fine! I don't see any crossed lines there. When our (6) kids were young, we lived down the road from a fairly well-to-do family and they had a sort of sink hole at the back of their property where they would just discard things. The highlight of my kids' lives was going to the "junk pile" and retrieving good stuff. They got a couple of perfectly good, crocheted afghans, even a purse with some money in it! Ever since, we call it "the Junk pile mentality" - exactly what you are doing. I garden, preserve food, cook from scratch, forage, make bread, and pinch pennies. It's fun! What nice doggies.

You gotta try vinegar, water and a little dawn for windows it's better than windex. Cost like 13 cents. Here is the recipe.
    Window cleaner
    2 cups of water
    -¼ cup of white vinegar
-½ teaspoon of dish soap (Dawn)

I have dug up many plants. You can always find homes that are going to be torn down and the landscape will be destroyed. I pick up twigs and pine cones for fire starters. It's called being resourceful.

The person who left the burger may have been cleaner and healthier than the people who cooked the burger. Or not. I would have been extra careful and cut off any part with bite marks. But if the rest of it was untouched, it's no different than paying for a new burger. The nasty things happen in the kitchen, once it gets to a table, it's probably not going to get much worse.

I used to live in Washington state and we picked wild berries daily for consumption and canning. We also picked apples and peaches and cherries for canning, pies, freezing and just healthy eating. I think you did a really great by planting your own plants. We lived by a field that was accessible to us. Good on you!

    1. Make own cleaning stuff
    2. Measure everything I use to clean, mop bucket, work out how many litres it holds and measure cleaning stuff accordingly.
    3. Collect scrap metal on my ebike and cash it in.

My downfall is being super picky about food.
That doesn't mean I need expensive food tho.
It means I prefer to cook my own food.
I guess I got that going for me.
My favorite recipe is from the Great depression.
    Potato soup with unsweetened cornbread.
5 lb peeled potatoes cut into big 2 inch chunks, 1 white onion sliced into rings, all covered with water plus 2 inches of water above vegetables. After they are tender I add a cup of heavy whipping cream, and 1/2 stick salted butter. People from Appalachia had access to cows so butter and cream were easier to get. City folks were not so lucky. Anywho, Add salt and pepper to taste. Add chopped green onions, bacon bits, shredded cheese if desired, but I take it plain. I can eat a whole pot of it, til it's gone.
    I'm big on soup and I think it's a money saver!😊

I have volunteered to clean up dinners at churches, weddings etc and have taken tons of food with me. Dire times show what you're made off! And I'm still around and kicking. I remember when I was little, at camp there were berry bushes and we would pick them and have them just as a snack. Never got sick. Now as an adult, thinking now I probably should have rinsed them in water but no harm done that I know of. I hope your plants turn out lovely in the front yard :-)

I've made $40. off steel, aluminum, copper salvage metals found there in just a day....and about $5.00 in coinage metal detecting the site. I found lots of good 26" bike tires, lawn mower parts and generator parts i sold on E-Bay.

OMG! I work at (sometimes two gas stations, same franchise...yeah the young kids call out, and don't want to work) a gas station/convince store that also has a car wash. I collect the cans like a crazy lady....everywhere! I have a whole system...not to waste anything. You would be shocked at what people throw away at the car wash. I'll sell items on different platforms. I want for nothing (eventually I find it in the trash at the car wash)....LOL. Even expired freshly thrown away snacks and "food" at the gas station. ( I'm fussy about the food.) I always check the mark downs at the supermarkets, etc. Many times my dog eats like a King. Your channel is so awesome! I spend next to nothing every day.
