    Cardinals can vote for themselves. They have the permission to vote for anyone they think will be the best Pontifex Maximus, even themselves.

    • @francescotiano70
      @francescotiano70 Před 6 lety +51

      It is right but if the Pope should be elected with a majority of 1 vote only and if among those votes there is his vote for himself, the ballot is annulled. Every ballot paper has a hidden code related to each cardinal. In the case of an election with one vote more only, the Decan Cardinal can check if the cardinal-the Pope to be, has voted for himself. This is also the reason why the ballot papers are burnt every time. It must not be possible for the new Pope to know which cardinal voted for him.

    • @jasonkoch3182
      @jasonkoch3182 Před 6 lety +20

      Yes they can. The rule was changed after the election of Pius XII. In Vacantis Apostolicae Sedis, he changed the rule, requiring a candidate to receive a two-thirds + 1 majority so that his own vote could not be the deciding vote. This has been upheld in more recent changes to the conclave by Paul VI, John Paul II, and Benedict XVI. There is also no way to know for whom a cardinal has voted for as they no longer have to sign their ballots.

    "Under 80" (re: conclave participation) is now applied to the moment the papacy became vacant, not to the start of the conclave. This rules out scheduling of the conclave to include or exclude a Cardinal who is very close to the age limit. Cardinal Walter Kasper was 79 when Pope Benedict XVI resigned, and actually entered the 2013 conclave at age 80, having reached 80 BEFORE that conclave. Cardinal Lubomyr Husar, 1 week older than Cardinal Kasper, was 80 when Pope Benedict resigned and was not in the conclave.

    "Cardinals are not allowed to vote for themselves"
    How do you even enforce that? If the ballots are anonymous and they're all read out loud together after everyone votes instead of one by one as they come in, there's no way the other Cardinals could possibly know who voted for who.

      That actually is quite logical, but of course popes have done good (for example John Paul II was against Apartheid in South Africa and said it should be abolished, or helping end communism in European countries).

      Well...I find your insult very incoherent and superfluous. I guess your brain is a worth of two pence and a quarter shillings. Being elected as the Pope of the Catholic Church ⛪ is not the front of heart and also, I don’t find it ridiculous. I guess u don’t read the Bible at all, try to read a bible for once see what u come up with it

      Your comment is meaningless and pointless, also idiotic.
      It has a ton of meanings for catholics.
      That is a catholic procession in which the ones who are suitable for voting vote.
      The vote has to be defined, not won by one vote over the half, but at least two thirds, so that the catholic scholars are clearly for the chosen pope.

      How are you able to function in society then? An oath is a promise, this is clearly not true since Jewish priests in the old testament probably had to take oaths

      Betty Boo's Sister why so many agresion, catholicism is western Christianity, it’s not put the Pope on the place of God. God is Lord who always was on the first place, we are pepole created by God who is Holy Trinity, and we serve to him if we want. I want, do you?
