  • In this video we'll go over boss monsters from the early days of Yu-Gi-Oh, who didn't age as well over the years, and hardly ever see play nowadays.
    -Deck code names-
10-Chaos Emperor dragon - Envoy of the End (errata)
    9- Chaos Sorcerer (power creep)
8- Black Luster Soldier (Saw tiny amounts of play in 2005 Earth BD deck)
7- La Jinn the mystical genie of the lamp (saw lots of play in various decks)
6- Blowback Dragon (saw lots of play in various decks)
5- Airknight Parshath (saw lots of play in various decks)
4- Vampire Lord (saw lots of play in various decks)
3- Evil HERO Dark Gaia (stopped by a single Effect Veiler/Impermanence)
2- Hitotsu-Me Giant (Highest atk lv4 monster in first ever set)
1- Summoned Skull (not even played in duel links were its synchro version is played)
Still see play - Jinzo, Lava Golem, cyber dragon, all signature cards.

yeah erratas shouldn't count given they rewrote the card, not that the game got too fast (like mirror force). CED would be great with the original effect. Especially as a burn finisher after gagaga cowboy or the like. This was a bad list. Chaos Sorcerer was never a great card (I'd just xyz into rank 6 with gagaga magician, or that stupid sorcerer of dark magic). It was a poor man's BLS, which can actually target face down monsters.
Then 5:20 over Mobius the Frost Monarch (which was dominant until Caius let you banish anything, or itself for 1000 additional damage to opponent to win).

@@andco53 here’s why a card that just says “draw 1 card, give your opponent 1000 life” is limited:
If you could, would you just run the 5 pieces of Exodia in your deck and win every game in your opening hand? If you were trying to win, course you would. But, there is a minimum deck of 40 cards, so you can’t do that. Even without the exodia example, most decks would be more consistent with 20/30 cards rather than 40, so they’d be happy to just remove cards from their deck, which is why a spell that draws a card is so good, it’s an empty deck slot.
So a card that draws two cards is rediculous, because it also gives you card advantage, imagine the crazy combos people do with 5 or 6 cards in hand in yu gi oh, now imagine it with 7 cards, there’s a reason draw was way more lenient back in the day, because you would end up with a bunch of normal monsters, spells/traps that revolve around monsters, and also effect monsters that give you some value, so back then “you only have 1 normal summon” meant usually only 1 or 2 summons a turn, and really only 3 or 4 cards could even be used a turn, even if you summoned a tonne of monsters or set a tonne of traps, they’d just get raigeki’d or heavy stormed, now you can use every card in your hand as a combo piece and get multiple negates out which stop your opponent from nuking you without certain going second cards

It also explains why Blue Eyes was so ridiculously overpowered. Not helping is the fact that, in the early manga and anime (and I'm guessing the Bandai card game), they didn't think to base tribute summons around the levels, so you could just bring the thing out onto the field in an instant..... in fact, what were the levels even for? Just more flavor?

@@YamatoFukkatsu The whole way monster stats were treated in the vanilla days bothers me so much and I think this terrible design is what paved the way for yugioh to become the monstrosity it is now. It didn't matter if a monster had 1-4 levels. In the same way, it didn't matter if it had 5-6, or 7+. Of all the stats a monster card had (Attribute, Type, Levels, Atk/Def) the only thing that mattered was its Attack and how many tributes it needed. And as you said, monsters didn't even need tributes at first. Yugioh's early days were a mess.

Muhammad Hafizi synchro and xyz were fine to me. Most of the time you were only looking at one xyz or synchro monster per turn, just special summoning 2 level 4’s or a tuner and whatever else in your hand. They started to lose me at pendulum and link summoning. Link monsters are literally the reason why someone can make these overpowered boards that if you saw back in the day (like 5 years ago) you would call a judge to report them cheating because literally all of their monsters have a way to negate all of your cards. Pendulums weren’t as bad, at first, but of course as support cards became a thing for them, it didn’t take long for pendulums to run through about 14 cards in one turn. Then link spam decks just run through like 30 cards in a turn. It’s pretty ridiculous. To be fair though, pendulums at first weren’t that consistent until they got support and was able to search a bunch of things they needed. It was a real shame seeing someone running performapals back in 2016-2017 and they had a bunch of scales that were totally useless in bringing out these dead weight level 5+ monsters.

Fun fact. Silver fang was actually the original boss monster in Vol 1. Not Giant. Because Giant, and Mammoth Graveyard didn't have any equip spells that could target them. The first competitive decks in the first ever format in 1999 were Beast beatdown decks that ran Silver Fang, Dark Gray, and Meotoko along with the equip spell Beast Fangs. Because Beast-Warrior, and Dinosaur didn't have equip spells yet. Silver Fang equipped with Beast Fangs would be 1500, and could beat over Mammoth, and Giant. So all of the decks at the first ever national tournament in Japan were running Beasts as their main win condition, and then they'd just will in the rest of the deck by picking two other types that had equip spell cards. Normally either Spellcaster Aqua, or Spellcaster Warrior. Because Spellcaster, Aqua, and Warrior were the only types that had both equip spell synergy, and monsters with the second best attack stat. Which was 800 atk. Nemuriko, The Furious Sea King, and Kagemusha Of The Blue Flames respectively. Out of boredom some friends and I occasionally play little tournaments using the February 1999 Format.

I mean, to be fair, Summoned Skull still has one very, VERY small niche: Red-Eyes decks sometimes run one copy of Summoned Skull in order to get out Archfiend Black Skull Dragon with materials from the deck using Red-Eyes Fusion, as it requires a level 6 archfiend normal monster as material, and Red-Eyes Archfiend of Lightning is only treated as a normal monster when on the field.

So you could summon Emperor dragon, your opponent decides to activate Torrential Tribute, you declare priority activate effect and nuke everything still. I still use summon skull. I have a deck revolving around summon skull and red eyes. Traps, magics, effects, the works. I've even beaten some competitive players with this deck. The thing is, most competitive players say certain cards are useless now with better versions that come out, but forget to realize that even a beat stick with no effect can still take control of a duel or even change the tide. They also get so caught up with the new wave of things that they forget how to use the old ones or even improve them with new cards. I don't play competitively, and I know being able to beat a few competitive players doesn't mean I could beat all or most. I know if I were to go in with this deck, someone would humiliate me. But, I also know there will be some who get humiliated by me playing these cards. My skull deck isn't even close to my blue eyes or dark deck, but at least it has proven to be good enough to beat some of today's competitive decks while playing for fun at home. Now if I wanted, I could play competitively with one of my other two, which also have some "useless", "broken" or "out dated" cards that can still beat other competitive players and remind them how good they still are. Hearing about cards that don't see play anymore for whatever reason, I started making decks with these cards to try and prove they are still as good as they were. Even cards that never really saw play to begin with, like invader of darkness. Who happens to be one of my favorites. When I got my first invader, no one I played really knew how good his effect really was, until they couldn't use a lot of cards they didn't realize they relie on. In combination with other monsters I had, he was the souls my deck. In tag duels in and around the neighborhood and small competitions my cousin and I would go to... next to his jinzo, there was no way around it. Mind you, this is still pretty much beat stick era. Even with the newer metas, invader still proves to be one of the greatest cards I use. But people still consider him out dated and useless. My point being, just because there are new better versions, different playing metas or whatever, doesn't mean every card has lost value in a deck. It's making the deck to fit the card, weather to revolve around it or just to use it. Even weak old boss cards can have place and still win you a competitive duel. It's all on how you make the deck

And the same goes the other way around - a bunch of stuff that's considered broken today were seen as "useless" when they first came out and people were derided for even thinking about using them.
People laughed at me for using Solemn Judgment way back then because, to everyone else, paying half your LP for any reason was "too much" and "stupid" to do (clearly ignoring how it could negate almost anything sans monster effects in general, but I had Divine Wrath for that, another card people saw as useless because it was "just a -1" due to the discard cost), but I royally messed up people's Chaos Emperor Dragon Decks by negating its Summon and since people didn't use Monster Reincarnation and such, they were left with nothing but a now-pointless Yata-Garasu and a Deck that was basically just a mish-mash of various LIGHT and DARK monsters, but no way to really pull off a big win.
