  • Bret Weinstein's testimony to the House of Representatives about the free speech crisis on U.S. college campuses.
    The testimony delivered by Dr. Weinstein to the members of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform explained that the crisis isn't primarily about free speech, and won't be limited to college campuses for long.

    Excerpt from Dr. Weinstein's testimony:
    Oppression Disguised as Equity
    Testimony of Bret S. Weinstein
    United States House of Representatives
    May 22, 2018
    Tomorrow is the one year anniversary of the day that 50 Evergreen students--students that I had never met--disrupted my class, accusing me of racism and demanding my resignation. I tried to reason with them. I felt no fear because I knew that, whatever my failings might be, bigotry was not among them.
    At that moment. I felt sure I could reach these students. I also felt a moral obligation to try. Racism, which squanders human potential, and erodes human dignity, offends me. I am also well versed in the evolutionary logic that makes racism durable. I should have had no trouble establishing common ground.
    Their response surprised me, and it would take months for me to fully understand what had happened. The protestors had no apparent interest in the very dialog they seemed to invite. I was even more surprised by the protestor's fervor in shouting down my actual students--some of whom had known me for years. The cruelty and derision reserved for students of color who spoke in my defense was particularly chilling.
    If not discussion, what did they want? I was one of Evergreen's most popular professors. I had Evergreen's version of tenure. Did they really think they could force my resignation based on a meritless accusation?
    They did think that. And they were right. What I had not counted on was their alliance with Evergreen's new president.
    Though the protestors openly humiliated him, the president of the college partnered with the mob in private, handing them concession after concession. We know this because the rioters filmed everything and proudly uploaded it. In one particularly telling video, President Bridges calmly discusses with the leaders of the protest a demand to target STEM faculty based on the empty assertion that scientists are particularly prone to bias. In that same video the president speaks of his plan for those who resist the new order: "Bring 'em in. Train 'em. And if they don't get it, sanction 'em." He invites his partners to hold him to it.
    On the second day of unrest, the police chief called me. Rioters were stopping traffic and searching for someone, car to car. The chief believed it was me. She was worried for my safety and helpless to protect me as the president had ordered her force to "stand down." What would have transpired if the rioters had found me? I still don't know, and I strongly suspect they don't either.
    The protest at my class did not emerge out of the blue in May, 2017. One year earlier I stood up and spoke in opposition to a dangerous proposal, one that threatened to establish a racial hierarchy amongst faculty.
    To those who have not faced something similar, this likely sounds hyperbolic. But one can now advance such policies, and almost certainly succeed in passing them, if they are properly draped in weaponized terminology. "Equity", for example, has taken on special properties. If a person opposes an "equity" proposal, those advancing the proposal are secure in asserting that their opponent is motivated by opposition to racial equity itself: In other words, that they are racist.
    My opposition to that first "equity" proposal was voiced to my colleagues, with no students present. Demands for my resignation one year later, were not the result of organic student confusion. They were payback for violating a de facto code of faculty conduct in which one's right to speak is now dictated by adherence to an ascendant orthodoxy in which one's race, gender and sexual orientation are paramount. The students were on a mission. They were unwitting tools of a witting movement.
    This committee should take my tale as cautionary. Is there a free speech crisis on college campuses? One can certainly make that argument, but that portrayal is at least as misleading as it is informative. What is occurring on college campuses is about power and control--speech is impeded as a last resort, used when people fail to self-censor in response to a threat of crippling stigma and the destruction of their capacity to earn.

It cannot be a coincidence, when the vast majority of the search results presented are false, it means there is a human being willingly manipulating search results to both push racist anti whlte propaganda and hide the truth. It's chilling or as you say in French "ça donne des frissons".

Unless you are going into something you are truly passionate about, or something you KNOW is going to give you a career and make you money, then I would strongly suggest an alternative route.....trade school. If you don't know what you want to do you could end up amassing tens of thousands of dollars of debt needlessly with no return for your efforts. There are many degrees that are completely useless and most of them are in the humanities/liberal arts realm. Job satisfaction is nice, but being able to feed yourself, put a roof over your head and clothes on your back is pretty cool too....
      You're GOING to run into professors who want you to write papers with views they agree with....even if you don't. They will mark/grade them accordingly. You'll have to deal with people who believe their's is the only possible opinion or way of thinking and will be "offended" if you don't share their views. Books are outrageously expensive and frankly you'll be required to take courses that have NOTHING what so ever to do with what you want to study. But you'll hear your academic "adviser" say things like "college is a marathon, not a sprint" etc..... They say that because the longer you are enrolled, the more money that school gets. You'll hear about "enrichment" courses....yeah, they aren't free either and the only ones getting "enriched" $$$ is the school. But again, if you're passionate about literature or poetry then go for it....just realize unless you get published you're probably going to end up teaching or working in some other field. If you have the skills, go for engineering, computer science, accounting, business or something like that. Teaching someone how to think is also referred to as mind control. When kids are taught WHAT to think you at least leave the door open for them to change their minds, seeing in this case you need to teach them about both sides of the argument to begin with, even if is it in a biased manner. We should just be teaching people to think.

They took the risk of others believing they were crazy. This is why the freedom to think on your own is so important. Only people with a truly horrid belief system, would demand that opposition be silenced. I believe myself to be right of center, yet I hold no ill will to those who would oppose me; I only expect that they would contest me based on the merit of mine and their argument(s). That the disagreement I may have with others is centered around a core value or principle that myself and my debater have a varying opinion on. Rousseau wrote in "On the Social Contract", that political parties/ideologies could and inevitably would be hijacked by unscrupulous and self-centered individuals if principle was left untended to. +mother nature last time I checked, College Professors are not technically allowed to push their own personal political views onto their students. At least when I went to college. Who Says "Weinstein" isn't one of the honest Professors that uphold this standard? Any professor that uses their position to push petty political agendas should be fired, and it has nothing to do with left or right wing politics either.

    As an employer who gets hundreds of applications for an opening, why would I hire an Evergreen graduate over say, Texas Tech, San Diego State or University of Massachusetts and risk getting a problem employee with a disruptive political agenda? Could I get such a person from any other school? Sure! But, I “know” about the chaos at this school. By eliminating applicants from Evergreen, I reduce the probability of a bad choice. It would be a very practical decision.
    Evergreen alumni should be worried about the national reputation your alma mater now has that can harm your chances for employment. Are your applications going to be filtered out by HR departments and recruiters? This is a very real possibility.

      Alan, I'd also suggest that any student attending Evergreen who didn't ascribe to this nonsense, should immediately transfer to a more sane college, pretty much for exactly the same reasons you describe. As a graduate and job seeker, would you want to be saddled with Evergreen on your resume or would you rather have almost any other far less controversial state college on your resume? I'd think that the answer is pretty self-evident. Run away from Evergreen … as fast as humanly possible.

What's worse is that, on an unrelated note, I saw another report along a similar vein that showed a flag whose symbol was two hands shaking, one white, one black, with a red flower above and behind them. Replace that flower with a red capital letter "V" and you've got the flag of INGSOC from George Orwell's book, "1984".

Now it seems the Right is more rational. i totally understand why people are upset about the wage gap, and believe gays should be able to get married, but the left abandoned real issues for made up ones... I hope someday things will find a balance and go back to normal again.

      @cwo2mdfay Před 6 lety +5

      Few people actually 'like' Trump. What they 'like' is that he's pure irritation to virtually every entrenched elite, and wannabe elitists, they detest. As long as he continues to fly in the face of all the status quos, as long as the economy continues to improve, and as long as the world wonders what he'll do next, rather than the US constantly wondering what the world is going to throw in our faces next, he'll be 'liked.' Personally, I wouldn't want to spend more than a half-hour with him, which is about 30 minutes longer than what I'd want to spend in the same room with Hillary or Obama.

    • @cwo2mdfay
      @cwo2mdfay Před 6 lety +2

      I'd be careful with the word 'normal.' I think Fox and characters like Coulter performed a necessary function of providing a counter-force trying to pull the political discourse and public policy back to a more rational and pragmatic center. Our public discourse is now little more than adolescent middle-school bullying fueled by magical thinking and omnipotence fueled largely by the left. I believe much of the conservative energy is simply an attempt to bring things back to the center. Calling conservatives racists, Nazis, etc, is the left's attempt to keep the pendulum to the left, far left, but more and more folks are seeing the left's lack of fresh ideas and an increasing reliance on worn out progressive ideas from over five decades ago.
