Vložit
- čas přidán 4. 02. 2018
- She put herself in danger in the pursuit of a good story. She uncovered wrongs committed in society. She traveled around the world, and she did it all in a time when women weren’t expected to do anything beyond get married, have children, and take care of their home.

Absolutely I agree. It’s just looking at the Victorian eta. Women were seen differently back then. Today a woman can do what she wants. Nellie set the stage for women in the future! She was ahead of her time!
"Advertisers don't like controversy. Sound familiar?" Hahaha love it!
We can identify.
The adpocalypse? Supposedly caused by PewDiePie?
@@British-Dragon-Simulations PewDiePie was merely a scapegoat for it. It was a general dislike for content on YT based on the opinions of thin-skinned and out-of-touch advertisers as a whole that lead to the pulling of ads. In other words, big corporations and agencies being out of touch with the people that supposibly provide for, an ongoing motif in human history you will find.
Put simply, businesses = dumb as hell. That is what caused the adpocalypses.
As I was growing up, I learned of Nellie Bly, a historical woman that defied the odds. Conversely, during most of my life i have read that Hollywood has a difficult time making movies about strong women. With this in mind I have always felt that they only needed to read a book about Nellie Bly and they would have a story depicting a strong woman.
French did movie Jeanne D'Arc in 1900 also known as Joan of Arc.
10 Days in a Madhouse is also a film. It came out in 2015. I think they did a good job with the movie.
Nellie Bly was a great person. Her attitude and heart were amazing. She is the one woman I would most like to meet from all of history. Many women today have that same attitude of 'I can do anything' and it makes us all greater.
*As One of God's PeoPLe, I wiLL Meet & Be Friends with NeLLie BLy!!!*
WOW, not only was she LOVELY, but she was SMART!!!! A 'DANGEROUS COMBINATION', especially in those days!!!!
I'm so glad women have made such great strides, but we still have a ways to go. I think we don't talk about what those with disabilities had to go through enough. She was a hero.
8 agree. We are still not equal between women and men. Men still get higher sentences for the same crime of rape.
@@tobytoby9153 But men get lower sentences for the crime of killing their spouses (at least in the USA)
I literally love this woman, I am so inspired by her, this women needs more credit.
Wow... loved it. Can't understand how I never heard of her. Well done
Cannot wait to watch the movie of her that's coming out!!
Most publishers are males.
@@Swnsasy is it out?
Thank you so very much for covering Nellie Bly. She was amazing. I never heard of her till i took my son to a little playland park in Brooklyn. It was called the Nellie Bly Park. so i looked her up. there are so many women (and "minorities") who deserve to be in our history books. i really can't understand it. for instance, there were real hero women who were pilots and didn't get the notoriety that the wealthy Earhart did. Harriet Quimby in 1911 was first woman to get a pilot's license in the U.S. Bessie Coleman (1892-1926) was the first Black American woman pilot - whose mother was born a slave and couldn't read. Raymonde de Laroche - in 1909, she made the world's first solo flight by a woman, taking off in a biplane. A year later, she became the first woman in the world to receive a pilot's license - she lived in France. so women started the "liberation" thing a long time ago. - - -So thanks again for Nellie Bly - she deserves a lot more attention than she gets.
@The mysterious Miss X gee, you really think i should READ! i knew about lots of things at 8 that you probably don’t even know now. imagine you telling me what to do like i was an idiot!! have a nice day!
The character Lana Winters from American Horror Story: Asylum is based on Nellie Bly :)
Awesome you should also cover ida b wells ,they called her princess of the press she covered lynchings in the south.
WOW. Incredible tale of an incredible woman.
What an absolute badass.
Jane here. Thank you for the excellent biographical sketch. I have read her account of her round the world trip. Actually she met with Jules Verne, and he greatly encouraged her.
I have also read her book about the insane asylum. One of the hardest things for her was to leave those precious, tragic friends she met inside there. She worried about what would become of them.
Great lady, and you did a great job.
I am from Apollo Pennsylvania near where Nellie Bly was born. I was very pleased how accurate this biography was. The only thing I would correct issues from Cochran Mills PA not Cochran PA
Yes, Cochran Mills, ancestors of mine ❤ he did a very good job!

I just discovered about this woman and am doing a biographical essay on her, and I am simply blown away by the amount of amazing things she managed to do within the short expanse of her 50-year life. Also, within reading both of her books, I love this woman's personality and how sarcastic she is. She deserves to be recognized more, and I would just like to say thank you for making this video :)
Okay, this woman is straight badass and can still serve as an example for all women, who want to achieve more in life! I love her mentality, I have the same burning passion to do stuff and not just settle with less!
Another great one... I had heard of Nellie Blye but I never knew what she was famous for, so today you added a new topic to my never ending search for knowledge and especially trivia, (so I can stump my old friends).
Thanks. She was Whitby for sure... “ boy with dynamite cartridge”. Humorous , but true.
Great video again. I really like this channel of Simon's (and his crew). This channel and TIFO are his best work IMO. This video being uploaded today is one of those times where a coincidence is almost mind blowing. Just 2 days ago (February 3) I had a conversation with a friend of mine that included Nellie Bly's name among others. It's just weird that we talked about her, and here's Simon with a new Biographics video about Nellie Bly.
Keep up the great work here Simon and crew. *:D*
As the owner of Toptenz, I am deeply offended! ;-) - Shell
Simon whistler does Tifo?
Yes, he does.
What an absolute legend. I honestly am dumbfounded to have not heard of her before. A pioneer in journalism and a legend in giving better treatment for mental illness and in subverting expectations for what a woman of the times could do. I always love to learn more about the more unsung heroes of history. ❤
Shell, Jack, Jamie, and Simon, this was a good video. I enjoyed learning about her in my studies but seeing the details you's have presented were a wonderful addition to what I have learned thus far. Thank you!
Just watched the movie. She inspires me. I can relate. The only thing that has kept me down is my illness too. The verdict is still out if I’m done for or if I will get a second chance.
how are you doing?
What an inspiration she is... Thank you, Mr Whistler for one more amazing video. I'm your #1 Brazilian fan.
Thank you for always sharing such amazing people that most people don’t even know about. I’m subbed to every single channel you have and dang near everyone you’ve recommended. Lol. Keep up the phenomenal work!
Awesome video mate!
Knocked it out of the park yet again. Brilliant.
Another great video Simon! 👍🏻😊
Great work as usual Simon....we love they way you weave these important to be told tales.....stories that illustrate so many aspects of human nature. So much can be gleaned by the studying of these lives, and your presentations bring so much of these aspects to life. Well done Simon....Well done indeed. Thanks for your work. We all benifit and enjoy.
Thanks for making these videos, my kids love them!
That is one of the best comments of praise we could ever hear. Thank you so much! - Shell
And my grandkids. Thanks.
I first read about her when I was in grade school. It was part of the Value series. It was called The Value of Fairness. The part where she went undercover at the asylum stuck out most in my mind. The ice cold baths, the deplorable conditions really left a message for me. If she hadn't brought it to everyones attention what would've become of the real mental patients?
Great biography well done. I did not know of her. Thank you for sharing.
Love this channel so happy that we discovered it👍♥️
Excellent article Simon.
Awesome job on this one. (And awesome job Nellie Bly.)
I really enjoyed this piece. I enjoy them all. I definitely have a fondness for the biographies of strong, brave women. Thank you!
Such an inspirational person for women and writers!! She’s awesome!!
I loved this video. Thank you!
Love this channel! Binge watched all the existing episodes already, can't wait for more. Also, an incredibly unrelated question, is the CPU cooler on that PC in the background a CoolerMaster T4 by any chance? it looks identical to what I've got sitting next to me, figured it couldn't hurt to ask :3
Hope Simon and the crew have a wonderful evening~
Wow this made me want to cry. Truly inspirational
I really enjoy your videos. Thank you for all your effort and hard work. Btw, I’m loving the beard these days!
Guys, thank you kindly for your work in showing everyone who this amazing person was this, Nellie Bly. 😎 Love this channel
Thank you this was a joy to watch
I knew of Ida Tarbell, but not Nellie Bly,. Great video.
Nellie Bly has definitely made a revolutionary change in journalism especially since she is one of the first undercover journalist.
Normally the whole "strong female role models" just bugs me. Because I don't see a need to particularly highlight someone's feats just because they are female (and fyi; I am female). But Nellie Bly really just left me in awe, and if there's anyone I'd really see fitting that image of a "strong female role model" it'd be her. This lady faced one wild adventure after the other, of many things that no other person would even do in their life at all. To boot, she had to face the heavy discrimination women faced at that time, only making all these adventures all the more complicated. And all of that with a seemingly positive attitude and a headstrong passion. A person definitely deserving to have their name go down in history. Very inspiring, and deserving of all the credit.
Holy hell how come I never heard of her before? oO It's for this kind of discovery that I love this channel
I am so glad that I subscribed to this channel. Your videos are so interesting! As an independent American woman, I am slightly embarrassed that I had not heard of this woman before. Thank you for teaching me something new!
Excellent video! I think this is the first person you covered that I knew nothing about.
Anyway, I wonder have you consider making video about Tadeusz Kościuszko?
Oh I like this video. And the subject. I am more and more fond of this channel. Keep it up
great stuff!
Thank you for this she is an ancestor of mine!
What an amazing lady. Thank you.
Another excellent video!
In elementary school I read a series of books based on the lives of historical figures like: Madame Currie, Martin LK, Jackie Robinson etc .. I had almost forgotten that Nelly was one those figures the books highlighted Until now, truly a remarkable woman. great video.
Another great video! :)
Great job I continue to learn thks
I kept thinking of Shudder Island when she was at the asylum. Can’t imagine what that must’ve been like for her. She saved so many lives from mistreatment by doing that.
This was wonderful. More biographics about women, please!
a great lady! good job, guys!
Wow, great Bio! Thanks! I learned a lot.
What a lovely bio:)Thanks
I loved this biography. I shared it with my 12 yr old because I found it so inspiring. But when I looked for other inspiring women biographies there were really none. We’ve watched Marie Curie, also excellent and a wonderful role model for girls wanting to get into sciences. Even though most history was written by men, there are so many incredible women that you can highlight. I’m really looking forward to watching more of these. Up next, Amelia Earhart! Thanks so much for these.
3:55 wikipedia says this part of her life was in 1885, and according to the inflation calculator I found, $5 in 1885 is equal to $160 USD in 2024. So she earned $4 an hour in 1885 compared to $7.25/hour today
Well done! Bravo!
I never heard of her till I watched the movie on lifetime tonight the way you explained I really enjoyed it new subscriber
Excellent, I had no idea.
Amazing and fearless
I love history, even i didn't know their existence it's always very interesting the story behind that person.
Simon, can you do a video about "Annie Oakley" ?
As far i know, she had a very interesting life too.
What ever you chose to do, keep up your great and educational vids.
How in the hell do 58 people dislike this? This channel tells history unlike ANY class in school ever did. I love it You should, all 58, be ashamed of yourselves
Great video about an amazing woman💖
please do Otto von Bismarck
Zack Brand there’s a great Extra Credit.series on him.
And one year later they just did it yesterday
What a fantastic lady and heroine Nellie Bly was she was indeed a trailblazer of her time and a brave one to she had a wonderful view of life and has made a difference to todays women GOD BLESS NELLIE BLY A TRUE STAR.
I played in that insane asylum in 1979. Grew up down the road, on Roosevelt Island, formerly Blackwell's Island. By then, only the octaganal center section remained. At 11, there was no way a group of boys was going to let that haunted ruin sit there and not try to get in.
Whole thing was rebuild in the 90s as a residential apartment building. Dynamite views of Manhattan, and probably a few ghosts...
The name?
The Octagon, of course.
Good video Simon and the Gang!
I sailed and got seasick, especially in a storm on the North Atlantic in December. It was the worst but after you get over it that's sailing and the placid waters of the great lakes in July won't do anymore...
Oh how much we need you right now, Nellie..
Word
Well done.
I cannot wait to watch the movie of her remarkable life!
Bravo Simon ♥️👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
First time I knew of her.. inspiring
The Nellie Bly bio was great! Perhaps you could someday feature the life of Esther Hobart Morris, the USA's first female judge, who was appointed Justice of the Peace, at Wyoming's South Past City beginning February 1870.
so courageous. women so powerful.
Great video, im always interested in history and i love your videos. Is there a chance you could do one on h.p. lovecraft
every time I see this title I think it says bill nye... you should do bill nye.
bill! bill! bill!
I've been told I'm boring by my younger siblings bcos of my interest in history and I love watching biography on the history channel,to me it's a way of keeping my brain sharper cos I need to constantly scramble my brains to remember the dates of certain event in history ,I love this channel and Ive binge watch all night and now it's 10a.m.😂
Do you also want to be a journalist like Bly?
"No one but a man can do this"... I know it was a different time but still... People discriminating over genders seems so stupid to me...
Great woman and great story
There used to be an old amusement park in Brooklyn named after her..... it was awesome.
I had heard the name Nellie Bly, but had no idea what she was famous for. Now I do. Thanks.
Love the history of Nelly Bly. You forgot to mention her trip to Mexico in 1988 where she reported her experiences for six months. And ended up with a book “Six Months in Mexico” by Nelly Bly.
I never even heard of this woman until the cartoon Xavier Riddle and the Secret Museum. I love her! She was literally ahead of the time!
Great video.
You guys should do a biography of Emma Goldman.
ApplesPapples OMG that would be so controversial
Very nice video, but random question. What song was it that you used throughout the video?
Very good video
Thanks so much !!
Fandamntastic!
💚🐾💜💜🐾☃️🍀🍀🍀💛🌏❄️❤️
ayyyy shout out to Pittsburgh!!
Why people in school never talked about such remarkable woman?!
Oh no! Pneumonia. Goes to show how important medical research is.
And thanks for the video! I had never heard of Nellie Bly before.
Now, i've watched the whole thing. thank you guys so much for doing these reports on so many women who were so dynamic. in school all we heard about was Betsy Ross and Clara Barton (who was amazing), and Florence Nightingale. Marie Curie was given a mention. We heard about a few writers. i was a curious and adventurous child, living in nature. but eventually the woman thing took me over for various reasons, although my favorite actresses were Bette Davis and Barbara Stanwyck! Now, if you believe it, i feel entitled. even though i'm ancient LOL, i can still make a difference. thank you so very much. Boy, i wrote a lot!!! well, you don't have to read it :}
Wow! What an amazing woman 😃
