    Welcome to another episode of Challenger Approaching! In this series, we discuss characters who could find their way into Super Smash Bros. Ultimate or future entries, then go into ludicrous detail on what they would be like if they joined the fight for real!
    This time...is rather unusual. Newcomer speculation migrates often between ideas, but a recurring topic is indie games and their position in Smash. Though we've seen Spirits, Mii Costumes, and an Assist Trophy based on indie characters so far, many still wonder if one could become a full-fledged fighter at some point. And while a handful of games and their characters are discussed as a potential "indie rep", Hollow Knight and its protagonist are surprisingly overlooked for the subject matter despite the game being so highly regarded.
    But regardless of the odds--either perceived or actual--what could the Knight actually do in Smash? How could this silent, masked warrior turn the aesthetics, gameplay, and overall feel of Hollow Knight into a unique and interesting moveset? Let's find out.

    Here’s an idea: one of the taunts could be the Dreamnail, and if you hit a fighter with it, you get to see what the are thinking.

      Same, they would be perfect for the game! I also want another sonic character preferably tails with his mech as a new heavy, for characters id want to see but know wont be in the game are the doom slayer and John-117(master chief). though master chief might actually have a shot of being in the game due to the most recent Microsoft owned character getting his way into the game.

    As someone who recently beat Hollow Knight for the first time, this was right up my alley! The Soul Gauge mechanic is exactly what I had in mind and the specials work perfectly with the character's moveset already. Fantastic breakdown!

    Watching this just after Steve got announced (who was originally indie), I think the knight has a good chance. I'm so happy Steve's in so I'll root for anyone now. I'll cheer you on Hollow Knight fans

    If The Knight became a character, I wouldn’t need anyone else. I don’t care who else gets in. Most people might have a character that would be their absolute dream. This is my Dream character. Such a wonderful move set idea.

    God, I'd love to see The Knight/Ghost in Smash - not just for how different it'd be, but for the beautiful music from Hollow Knight that would come with. I wonder if its stage would be the City of Tears, the White Palace, Grimm's Troupe, or Godhome. The latter would probably be the best seeing how variable it can be, but personally I'd want to see the City of Tears brought to life by the Smash team.

      I would say that the stage would be the dream realm where the Knight fights the Radiance. But before the Knight fights the Radiance, where it has the 3 platforms.

    Now hear me out for the trailer:
    Palutena is fighting Darkhon and their copy fighters.
    She defeats them and Darkhon when all of a sudden, a giant fountain of darkness spurs and a figure with eight eyes is shown
    the figure form shrinks and flows into a small head shaped object with horns
    the figure looks forward and the splash screen appears:
    The Knight
    Ascends to Smash!

      Same! Personally I think hornet would probably work better (I just personally think she has better potential because she has tools and silk instead of just soul.) but I’d just be happy for either to get in, and the knight has good potential too

    I honestly believe that The Knight/Ghost has a solid chance of getting in as a mii sword fighter costume, considering the other indie mii costumes. As a full character though? I kind of doubt it. It would also be like, PERFECT for a sword fighter costume, considering the nail.

      Idk, I imagine he'd have amazing frame data, a disjoint, an awesome projectile, decent mobility, plus he's small and hard to hit. He might even be able to heal himself on command. He definitely has potential. We'll hope for the best

    Cool moveset but I'd change a few things:
    Neutral B: Vengeful spirit. Having a projectile as a neutral b just feels more natural.
    Side B: Crystal Heart. Works like in the game but only goes slightly farther than fox and falco's side b and puts the knight into free fall in the air
    Down B (on the ground): Focus. I chose to change focus to down B cause it's a high commitment move and you wouldn't want to do it accidentally by hitting B
    Down B (in the air): Desolate Dive. You cant focus in the air in Hollow Knight so I chose to make desolate dive take the spot here.

      @@ungiornomas6209 i was thinking the shade dash could be the knights roll and airdodge. A small amount of damage could be dealt when rolling through an opponent (not a lot since a roll that deals damage would be kinda op)

      I actually have someone to add to this, kinda like Joker's Arsen, when the knight reachs 80%, Vengeful Spirit becomes Shadeful Spirit (Not sure if that's the shadow version, I know it exists though) Focus grows faster but spells take more soul, and the stronger version of Desolate Dive.

      I'm honestly tired of people calling that boss B.S. And I spent over five hours dying constantly. It's just a complex fight with a lot to memorize and perform. It's like a cuphead boss.

      @@thesnatcher3616 I completed cuphead in expert and I can comfortably say that Absolute Radiance is harder than all of them. It has a lot of rng, I beated her after a couple tries because of pure luck, and now I'm barely able to get into phase 3! The laser you have to dash through can combinate with other of her attacks, leading into almost unavoidable damage, and that's very unfair (specially in radiant mode). And if you are trying to complete the 5 pantheon you have to spent like 40 minutes on EACH TRY.
      So yeah, she's insane for me.

      @@system_ai9248 Yes, I see. I've seen your argument about 50 times by other people before. I'm not sure what phase you're talking about but I'll assume it's the platform phase as that's probably the hardest part. Yeah how long the fight lasts is rng dependent but that's only if you stick to one platform like a turtle. Her sporadic teleportations actually have a strict rhythm that can be memorized and predicted and while the yellow projectiles can be a nuisance at times, if your paying attention to your environment, you can easily avoid most of them as the game gives you plenty of space to navigate. As for the lasers, her face lasers have an obvious pattern that you should have picked up from the first radiance fight. It's just faster. As for the column laser, it comes before and after a successive attack and you can clearly hear the SHSHSHSHSHSH from the background. And unlike the first phase, it doesn't teleport to the other side if you were too close to its spawn point. None of the attacks in the platform phase overlap. In fact, the attacks are slower than that of the first phase and the intervals between attacks are pretty long. The swords are slower too which is good cause if it wasn't the fight would be harder than it already is.
      This is coming from a guy who didn't even beat her yet in the hall of gods. As for your complaint against the 40-minute slog. at that point, you should have learned all the boss fights in the game so well that it should be a piece of cake. The last four pantheons properly train you for the fifth pantheon. So it was pretty easy for me. Got to Absolute Radiance on my first try! So please, try to find in-depth reasons why you find the attacks unfair. Feeling unfair and being unfair is a big difference. As a cuphead player, you should know this better than everyone. It's the reason why the majority of the Dark Souls fandom think Capra Demon and Bed of Chaos are unfair bosses.

      @@thesnatcher3616 First of all, my point about the 5 pantheon still stands. The trail isn´t hard because you have mastered all bosses, but still takes a lot to get to her and feels annoying, it´s like the old Nes games where you have to go back to the start every time you die. They could made at least the last bench to work as a normal one. And for the final boss, I was talking about the starting phases when talking about the laser. When it comes out with the spikes in the same part of the platform,you only have 2 options, and both of them leave you open to get hit.
      I understand your point, Absolute Radiance isn´t a bad boss, but her predecesors are way better in comparison, so the hate of part of the fandom is understandable. In those bosses, you will never succeed until you master them, but with radiance, even with her insane difficulty, this doesnt happen. Personally, she feels a bt too extreme for me, and I
      don´t feel like I´m learning when I die. This is why I don´t like her, not because of her being bad, but because of being anticlimaticly hard and forcing you to change your entire playstile.

      @@system_ai9248 Opinions are opinions. Yeah, she can be frustrating at times but she seems like the perfect final boss for me. She tests you on dash timings, double jump timings, nail slashes, soul management, platforming, and multi-tasking, and heal timings. She is the only boss that really tested me and pushed me to my absolute limits. While the fight does feel like a loose wagon at times, whenever I died, it always felt like it was my fault. I mistimed my dash, I got too greedy with my hits, or I wasted all my soul trying to heal and was left with one h.p. I personally have a deep respect for this boss for testing me in a way no other video game really did. I don't really get the "change in playstyle" argument though. If anything she asks for you to master the game's mechanics that were already built and set up by the game.
      But yeah, I see why you might think that. The fight's really rough and waaaaay harder than her predecessors. Can we agree though that Pure Vessal is one of the best bosses in the game though?

    People usually imagine The Knight getting in as the Hollow Knight character, though Hornet is one of my most wanted characters. I think she has potential to be more fun to me even just based on the Silksong trailer and her fights in Hollow Knight. And with her game coming it might work a bit better to put her in from a marketing perspective since she's in both games(I doubt The Knight will be in Silksong), and I'd bet Silksong can stand on it's own without playing the first.

    My biggest hope for Smash at this point is for ANY indie character to make it in, so this video was neat. The Knight themself seems pretty neat, especially in terms of their theme/aesthetics (and I like what I've played of Hollow Knight, even if I keep taking long breaks from it).Would it be possible to see a video on Quote (wide array of interesting projectile attacks) or Cadence (potential for powering up moves with rhythmic inputs) in the future?
    I appreciate the nod to the CommanderVideo trophy; while I don't know how common this actually is, I keep thinking that people would forget it in the wake of Shovel Knight and Shantae (much larger indies) appearing in Ultimate's base game.

      There are two indie reps I see getting in. The knight, and Quote from Cave Story. The knight has a large fan base, plenty of requests, and Hollow Knight is extremely popular right now. They would probably not get in due to being too new, and lack a history. This was why shovel knight never became a character. Quote is from a game with a small fan base, but a devoted one. Cave Story is hailed as the grandfather of all indie games, and opened up a new age of indie games. Quote has the history and is one of the best representation for indie games. Despite how old it is, it still gets remastered for every console generation. Cave Story was one of the first games released on switch. The only thing holding Quote back from being in smash is the lack of popularity.

    I’d love to see Madeline from Celeste get in! I feel like if balanced properly, she could bring over Celeste’s momentum with dashes as aerials and dash attacks. Maybe she could even have four diagonal dashes to do things like wave dash? (And I’m referring to wave dash in Celeste, not Melee) If you ever plan on doing her, hit me up I got ideas.

    Follow-up comment cuz an idea occurred to me: what if the side taunt was the very slow dreamnail slash? It could have a hitbox like some other taunts do and maybe instead of doing damage it restores more Soul than a typical attack? Maybe even restoring extra when hitting a stunned/broken shield/sleeping enemy? Would be cute.

    This is a super cool moveset. The only thing I would change is making the Final Smash turn The Knight into the Shade Lord and use that cutscene, as they're literally known as the Devourer of Gods and is the only one able to defeat a beefed up Radiance that's even more powerful than the one in the Dream No More ending. It doesn't get more "Final Smash" than that.

      ProRSIXfinka nah nobody even sees that ending. Plus the shade lord just isn’t as good looking as the knight’s shade and the way it attacks isn’t as dynamic as what would be needed to be used on enemies other than the radiance

    I've seen a fair few different takes on what the Knight's moveset could look like in Smash Bros. and they are all so different. The mechanics of Hollow Knight are so unique and fundamental in game that it really does makes the Knight a very interesting character choice. It may not be the most likely, or most wanted choice but I certainly think it has some of the highest potential compared to most other characters.

    I LITERALLY SCREAMED WHEN I SAW THIS.
    *Ahem*
    I've been advocating for this characters inclusion in smash ever since ultimate came out, as Hollow Knight is my all time favorite game besides BoTW. And this moveset couldn't be better! Although I would've given the Knight at least average aerial base movement, and initial acceleration in the air being a bit higher to show some of the aerial prowess our Ghost can have in the game. That, and I would've had the final smash instead start with the Vessel lashing out at half a stages worth of opponents, before merging with their siblings and giving rise to the Shadelord, who would tear assunder and devour their enemies!
    But besides this, and a dedicated pallet swap referencing Hornet with a red cloak, this hit the head of the nail for me! Soul meter, charm references, bait and punish gameplay, pogo down air, and a polarizing moveset that balances big commital attacks with quick combo friendly ones! It really made me so happy to see a concept for this character be made, and here's to hoping there's at least a spirit event, or mii swordfighter costume of our Knight.

    Your videos are always such a treat! And seeing so many abilities I haven't come across in my own journey through Hallownest really motivates me to return to the game soon. Very cool moveset concept, though I honestly feel like it may be a bit much for Smash Bros. It sounds it'd be more at home in Rivals of Aether! Though that's just me.

    great video, some things you left out that could be fun are: using the baulder shell charm when shielding, using the shape of uun charm when crawling, and when the night is hit with a killing blow they have the effect of being hit in hollow knight(pauses for a second as an effect like broken glass is seen, with the duuuuuuunnnnnnn sound effect they use

    My idea for the spells was to map all of them to Neutral B, which allows for Down B to be Focus, and makes room for Crystal Dash to be Side B. I have my own differing ideas. I will say you did a great job on the video.

    Love the design. As you say, the source game is so perfect for a platform brawler that the moveset practically writes itself. I love the way you worked in the Thorns of Agony for the NAir.
    The only things I would change from your design are the grab animations (I think you could make use of the void tendrils there), the Up B (I would put Crystal Heart there and move the Shade Cloak to the roll animation), and the BAir (I saw a video by AranOcean that suggested this could be a place for the Dream Shield, and I agree that would be better than a custom animation)

    As a pretty hardcore fan of Hollow Knight, I like this take. It breaks and reinterprets the mechanics of the original character a bit, but in return delivers a robust and unique playstyle in a game setting very different from ol' Hallownest. There are a few moveset interpretations for the Knight on CZcams, but I think this one presents the most Smash-aware option, producing a character that would fit well into the game and feel good to play, rather than simply being the closest to a 1:1 transfer from the original medium possible.

    This is super up my alley, and I think that the knight would be an AMAZING addition. Though I did have a question. I made my own move set for the knight, and ours turned out to be very similar, right up to the charging moves to get the enhanced versions. As someone who has put way more thought into this than I have, I wanted to see what you thought about a few of the ideas I had
    1. For the biggest thing that differed between our move sets, up smash being howling wrath’s threw me for a loop. This is just me, but I always pictured it as great nail, swing from the bottom that would only cover front facing and air options. It wouldn’t cover the back of the character, so if they attempt a mix up he would be completely vulnerable, and as in your video, it would be a very commitment based option.
    2. Because I’m my hypothetical version, up smash was great nail, I originally thought of forward smash as the dash charge. But when you made it a dash attack, I realized how much sense that made, and changed it to long nail, maybe a thrust similar to Luigi or byleth (obviously not the same range as byleth, but you know) or a long nail slash that doesn’t really cover air.
    3. From there, I think the only differing thing is the knights recovery. In my mind his specials were akin to that of robin, or as you said, hero. Having all of his moves that rely on soul be special moves made sense to me, and it would be easier to think about it. With a smash attack being able to completely run out, while making an interesting approach option for the opponent if they realize that knight can’t up smash, it seems strangely disjointed from the other specials.
    4. Continuing it off of three, howling wrath’s and it’s counterpart that I can’t remember the name of at the moment, his recovery would be similar to ness, Lucas or yoshi, where as his second jump has more maneuverability and reaches farther, extending his combo game but also being risky if the combo leaves off stage. That might make him to restricted to the stage, which wouldn’t be fun, but in the game monarch wings went farther than the normal jump so it made me think of yoshi, having some sort of super armor to make his recovery better, but that is an iffy thing.
    5. The last thing was just a random idea, but since in this hypothetical move set, his dodge would be the shade cloak since it wasn’t used yet in this version of the knight. Just a fun little thing.
    Again, I want to be clear, I’m not saying that my version is better or anything, I just wanted to put it out there, and maybe see what you think about it. I very much hope I didn’t sound pretentious or condescending or anything like that, if I did I apologize sincerely.
    On another note, what are you most excited about for silk song? Great video, by the way. Much more in-depth with the weight, and running speed and frame data than I thought it would be.

    Qbby from BoxBoy is my number 1. I've made and seen a few different interpretations, like all of his Specials being the different Box Powers from 3 or being able to cycle through them as a Down Special with his gimmick focusing more on how many boxes he has present at a time, so I'd love to see what you could come up with.

    One thing that I'd want included is the ability to heal with the soul gauge. Something so memorable in the game is looking for the window of opportunity to get a heal in during boss fights. Maybe either via a taunt or something.

    I'd probably say that the Final Smash for The Knight should be The Lord of Shades from the Godmaster ending. I just feel like seeing The Knight transform into that massive creature and seeing it grab your character would be utterly terrifying to experience but oh so very satisfying to actually do to others

    That was a really cool breakdown -- I've only played a bit of Hollow Knight, but I got a good glimpse of the gameplay style and overall aesthetic through this. A meter where you necessarily need to deal damage to refill it is a good idea. With Cloud, he can start charging to kind of force the opponent to approach, but with the Knight, you're the one who needs to approach to fill your meter.
    As for other characters I'd like to see breakdowns for, what about one of Falcom's protagonists from the Legend of Heroes: Trails or Ys franchises? Estelle Bright from Trails in the Sky would be interesting on account of being a bo staff fighter and having a complex list of spells with the Orbment system, whereas Adol Christin from Ys is from a fast-paced, in-your-face action series with mechanics like Flash Guard and Flash Move that could be translated in some way. Falcom also has a rich history to pull from -- for example, the first Ys was made for the PC-8808 in Japan in 1987, and the series is still going.

    This move set is cool, but some of the costs are actually wrong. The shade versions of the spells DO NOT use more soul. and also it is kinda dumb that you have to go all the way through with the healing because then the move is virtually worthless.

    This is the third video I've seen about Hollow Knight being in smash and I notice the ideas presented are pretty much the same with slight variation. To me this says that The Knight is perfect for smash and I hope it actually happens one day.

    I think that one of the specials(down b, b) should be a option selection(like shulk) where you get to equip a charm for a little while, u would have the option for: mark of pride for extra range, quick slash for better frame data, mark of strength for extra damage, and soul eater for extra damage on specials. They would last for about 15 - 20 seconds each and have a cool down like shulk

    It would also be really cool if you got a random charm each time you take a stock that applies a modifier to the knight like in Hollow Knight. A mechanic that replicates the Knight having to kill their shade after dying would be really cool too, but instead of regaining geo they would regain use of their acquired charms

    An alternative to the Howling Wraiths up smash being reliant on soul and thus being unusable without it could be that having soul could power up the smash into Abyss Shriek (the upgraded version of HW). It would add incentive for conserving and using soul at the right moments for massive damage, without the fear of your up smash not working.

    Stocke from Radiant Historia is actually a niche character that could work. I think the fact that his attacks force enemies to change postion works well for a Smash moveset plus he has shadow and fire magic so a spell sword who has hard hitting attacks rather then a zoner.

    Another cool idea: if you fully charge your up-smash, Howling Wraiths turns into Abyss Shriek (its upgraded form). It costs a bit more soul than Abyss Shriek (due to balancing reasons), but it'd be a VERY reliable kill move

    Have you played Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night? I'd be interested to see your take on Miriam, the main character from that game.
    I haven't played much of Hollow Knight (I've only just gotten the dash attack), but I thought the moveset was interesting, and seeing how many attack and movement options you get later on (along with what appears to be an automatically recharging soul gauge? Maybe I misinterpreted what I saw in some of the footage) is encouraging.

      As you unlock more charms (basically little relics that grant you specific abilities/passives), you do gain other ways to generate soul, though the main source will always be dealing damage

Hollow Knight finally clicked for me after I got a few upgrades, so I managed to unlock one of the extra soul gauges (or whatever they're called - the ones where you have to get three items to make a little circle appear next to your soul gauge). Since then, I've got the double jump and the slam attack, and I'm now in the Deepnest.
