- Although I edited out most of my problems in turning this, most of my regular viewers know I'm not a spindle turner. I just have issues with trying to think through a design and then accomplishing it. Though I still had issues, the end result is exactly what I had in mind! Pleasantly surprised! This is Russian Olive. Darker and more coarse grained than traditional olive, it's easy to turn and looks great. Finished with shellac based sanding sealer and Acks Abrasive Paste and Finishing Polish.

I don't know why you don't have the faith in yourself that we have in you and your work. You always create the most beautiful pieces of art!
Thank you, Jo Ann! It's the spindle turning. I know I can do it, but it's not much fun for me. I'll keep trying! 😊
Congratulations on the Vase 🏺. Beautiful. Thanks for sharing. Glad you are safe.
Thank you, Tony! Cheers! 😊
when i was little, our neighbors had a line of Russian Olive just on their side of the fence. my sisters and i, and sometimes the kids from down the road, would play in them sometimes. thank you, Phil, for bringing back a little bit of my childhood. this piece turned out so beautiful. you have a knack for bringing out the best a piece of wood has to offer.
😊
Impressed with that lovely grain another great job phil
Glad you like it, Daemon, thank you!
Really brightened up a rainy day in Scotland. Great result. Thanks Kev
Glad to know that, Kev, thank you so much! 😊
Ok, Dr Bowl Guy...now you are a spindle guy! Wonderful job. And without a spindle steady. Kinda makes one tense. Glad you are safe from the fires. Thanks for the education with the Russian Olive. Just a beautiful piece. Jay in Tennessee.
Thank you kindly, Jay! 😊
Hi Phil.... for someone who doesn't like spindle work you sure made an excellent job with the vase.... lovely colour and grain... I liked the shape... I'm glad that you are safely home and hopefully no damage... great video... take care...All the best.....Andy
Many thanks, Andy! 😊 Home and I are safe!
I have 5 Russian Olives in my driveway! they are the most spectacular tree! Blossoms are intoxicatingly fragrant in June and the leaves are silvery blue and the tiny fruit can be used for making jelly. The guy who comes to trim them every second year turns the wood for utensils and art! What a tree! You've done it justice!
Thank you, Rodney! 😃
Very beautiful grain,👍👍
Thank you! Cheers!
You proved you are a artist.
I enjoy and get inspired watching your videos.
Thank you, Steven! 😊 Cheers!
You are a master. Spindle or bowl work, just beautiful. I find spindles relaxing after getting beaten by bowl turning. Thanks Phil.
Thank you very much, M H! I understand where you are coming from! 😊
Wow, that turned out great. That is a neat grain, I wasn't expecting it to be so dark. I love watching you do spindle turning. It's not in your comfort zone, yet you still do so well. I find that encouraging to always try and retry and retry things.
Yeah, I'll keep trying but I don't have to like it! 😊
You sell yourself way too short, Phil. A person with your skill on the lathe can take any piece of wood and make it a work of art regardless of the orientation. This one is proof positive. So glad you took on the challenges of this spindle turning. The grain and hue are really pleasing. Thanks! Also glad you are safely back home.
Thank you, Greg! I can usually get it done but that doesn't mean I don't feel inadequate while I'm getting there. I'll keep trying, I like vases! 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Your honesty about how you feel while working on these projects is refreshing. We all feel inadequate from time to time and yet, somehow, we tend to get it done anyway. You are doing a great job. keep it up.
The more I look at it the more I like it beautiful wood and design
Wow, thank you, Phil!
The grain stands out beautifully! It is a lovely vase.
😊
You amaze me Yet another beautiful piece. Thank you. 👍👍👍
😊
I really like the ginger jar shape and that you tried something out of your comfort zone. Glad the shop and home survived the fires... Well and you too!
Me too! 😊 Thank you, Jen!
Very beautiful Wood outstanding job as always Phil love it
Thanks again, Mike! 😊
Absolutely beautiful Phil! Nice job and happy you are back home safe and sound and had a home to come back to!!
Thank you, Stephen! It's sure good to be back home!
The Grain is Magnificent. The little branch nubs made for plenty of knots. Hope you find interrest in turning more like this... Big Thumbs Up my friend...
Cool, thanks, David!
Great to see you change it up a bit Phil, love it
Glad you love it, Shawn, thank you!
Absolutely beautiful Phil.
Thank you, Carl!
Absolutely stunning awesome job Mr. Phil
Glad you like it, Donald, thank you!
I like to get a paint strainer bag , fill it with sawdust, and shavings, then shake out the fine dust into a container, and use it for filling cracks!
Nice work!
That's a great idea, Niles! You are a thinking man, I'm a reacting man. I will strive to be more like you! 😊
That turned out awesome Phil love the green on it great job 👍👍
Glad you like it, Charles, thank you!
Wow!! That is so beautiful, I would be proud to show that piece off. Good job Phil.
Thank you, Mary!
Thank You Phil , Thank You Crystal from South Dakota...Man Phil I love that ruffing gauge, quite the monster tool !!! For the record Phil > YES U R A SPINDLE TURNER!!! < you just haven't done it enough to feel like a spindle turner, that's all...Nice artistic camera work on the spindle drill chips (see u r an artist )...Like everything about it, grain, finish, shape...lets see...ah...it is a Russian Olive so perhaps make several more one fitting inside the other (or perhaps not, ha).....Something different & thank you (happy birthday Phil) tm
Haha, nope, no stacking vases from me! The thing is, I really like wood vases so I suppose I'll keep trying but it's a real effort. Thank you, my friend, it was a good day!
Lovely piece Phil, 👍👍👍👍👍
Many thanks, Mark!
For being afraid of the prospect of turning it, it looks pretty darn good!
Very nice of you, Bill, thank you!
For not knowing how to do elegant you sure hit it out of the park.... Nice job Phil. Don't doubt yourself you have talent flowing in rivers.
Thank you, Richard! 😊
BEAUTIFUL! I love the way you listen to the wood♥♥♥
Thank you very much, Lili! 😊
Beautiful job. You should do more spindle turning.
Thank you, Noel, I will. I'd like to get proficient at it but that may be unattainable.
Beautiful piece Phil love the grain
Thanks a bunch, Rich!
Awesome vase Phil. Love the grain and the crack gives it natural rustic look.
Thanks a bunch, Joseph! 😊
Love the vase. It is so unique in color and wood grain. Wish I lived closer that way I could purchase a couple of your works. God bless glad you are safe from the fires.
Thank you very much, Bonnie! 😊
Thats the biggest roughing gouge I’ve ever seen. What a beast you could take that gardening 😁👍🏻 I’d have split that along the crack made some bowl blanks and called it a day 😊
😊
Gorgeous vase!
Thank you, Texana! 😊
Once again, rabbit out of hat (or vase out of log). Keeping it simple of line without beads and coves worked to your turning strengths instead of against. Nicely done, and a good addition to your video collection!
See, Valerie, you know what I'm doing even when I don't! LOL! Thank you, my friend! 😊
Phil Anderson - Shady Acres Woodshop Beads and coves, beads and coves, beads and coves. Next on my practice list.
Wow Phil you have as usual outdone yourself. This vase is magnificent and spectacular. You can do anything that you put your mindset
Glad you like it, Kobie, thank you!
Beautiful grain and features revealed as you turned the piece. The line made by filling that crack even suits the shape and colour of the vase. Nice work! Cheers!
Thank you, Grant! 😊
nice job, classic shape and beautiful finish, thanks for sharing ..
Thank you, Grahame! Cheers!
Well you did a wonderful job turning something that you don't like doing. So now you have broken the ice. Can't use that as an excuse anymore. Great vase wonderful grain the knots make it stand out
Thank you, Joey! 😊 I'll keep trying, now and then!
The spectacular grain lifts the piece and the crack running all the way seems in place.
😊
Great to hear you're ok Phil. Very different from your usual turns but equally splendid. Looks really tactile. Stay Safe and thanks for sharing. Jules, Droitwich, England.
Thank you so much, Jules!
Looks pretty good Phil.
Thanks, Michael!
I gotta agree with Greg....you sell yourself short....beautiful work....
That is common for me when spindle turning, Loraine. I'm just not good at it. I can do it, just not very well. Thank you! 😊
I am not surprised that you found a beautiful vase in that less than beautiful Russian Olive branch that I sent to you. Thank you for turning another piece of that wood! I love it!
Crystal, you sent Phil a great challenge chunk! Good on you! 😁 👍 Thank you for helping us keep him 'fed'. 👀 🙄 😉 😁 👍
I'm so glad you love it, Crystal, thank you! Every piece has it's challenges. Without those, turning wouldn't be half as fun! 😊
I'm sorry you had to be evacuated and very glad indeed you're safe and back home. The vase is superb. The grain is sumptuous and you're right about the crack looking as if it should be there. You can do classic elegance. Thank you for sharing and see you soon.
Thank you for your time spent watching my video and for your great comment, much appreciated! 😊
Beautiful! Nice job Phil. You're an inspiration.
😊
Just plain nice! Marcus from Chesapeake VA.
Thank you, Marcus! 😊
You just proven yourself wrong - it is graceful, elegant, classical beauty and if Ihear once more that you don't know what you are doing, you will hear me screaming all the way from Australia. Last year our town was surrounded by the fires, I know what being scared is like. Glad you are ok.
Thank you, Judit! Sorry you had to go through the fires, too. I wasn't scared until I got away from here and had a chance to think about it.
I really enjoy your humor
I appreciate that, Barry, thank you! 😊
I kept hearing so much doubt in your voice but you are truly talented Phil! Gorgeous piece!
I'm always doubtful when I do a between centers turning, Tina. It's just not my thing but I keep trying! 😊
Nice, very nice! I knew you'd figure out how to do it!Thanks for sharing and keep up your great work!
Thank you, Alex! Cheers!
I swear! I would think you turned nothing but vases. This turned out so beautifully 😍 be proud of yourself and your amazing talent. You are a wood master 👏
Thank you so much, Maurine!! 😊
You're are the top man Phil. Lovely work.
I try, Alan. Thank you for watching! 😊
Fantastic: You achieved your desired art piece! Well done!
Thank you, Stephanie! 😊
That grain pattern is awesome. I like that you turned it in a way that let the grain be the feature.
Thanks, Danny! 😊
Simple, but elegant . Another beautiful piece.
Thank you so much, Lee! 😊
Well Style Guy, design talent must have snuck up on you. A beautiful stylish designed vase !
😊
Phil you did an excellent job! It turned out great. I really enjoy your videos!
Glad you like them, John! That means a lot to me! 😊
That Came Out Great Phil👍
Thank you so much, Steve!
That is gorgeous! 😍 Looks like it's made of chocolate! Thank you for sharing!
My pleasure 😊 thank you for watching! 😊
Love it Phil. Little chunky have seen others do it and slide a glass tube inside.
Thank you, L W! I do have some glass tubes and have done that a few times. It just limits the size of hole you can have. Most of mine are 1- 1/4 inches.
Nice grain and a great piece as usual.
Thanks for watching, Mark!
I have a long about 3 ft long and 12 inches in diameter that I have had for over 29 years. One of these days I going to get into it. I like the looks of the wood. Thanks for sharing.
Go for it, Edwin, there's no time like the present!! Thanks for watching!
Really nice ,Phil, as always!!
Thank you, Eddie! 😊
Don't know if I've seen you turn a vase Uncle Phil, but it's a gorgeous piece! I especially like the fact that you can actually seen the texture of the rings👍👍👍
I like that part too, Dwayne. Thank you!
Another great video. So informative 👍👍👍
Glad you enjoyed it, Steve, thank you! 😊
Very nice work! That's a really good shape for a vase! Don't never doubt yourself because you did a great job choosing the shape!
Thank you very much, Stephen!
When l saw the crack wasnt going away l thought firewood , but you saved it really well , very nice piece well done
Thank you, Rosemary! 😊 Cheers!
Beautiful vase and wood. The crack makes it realistic we are all cracked one way or another.
True enough, Judith! 😊
Great vase
Glad you like it, Radar, thank you!
Very nice vase I love that shape and the colour and all the different design that came out of the woods is beautiful and the crack is beautiful also very nice job for someone that can’t turn vase you underestimate yourself and practicing would give you confidence
I've turned a few vases, now, D R. Getting better at it but it's still not as much fun as a bowl! 😊
You can do elegant with the best of them, great looking vase.
Thank you, Tim! 😊
Really like the shape. The wood has a good color.!!
😊
I agree with Mr Alexander, don’t sell yourself short!
Thank you, Jean! 😊
Love the wood and design
I'm so glad, Mary Ann, thank you! 😊
My comments are always the same: oh, how beautiful. Thankfully, you’re much more articulate in your creations than I am.
Haha, oh, I think you are doing just swell, Cheryl. Thank you! 😊
Looks good phil
Thanks, Dennis!
That grain is awesome.....
I'm glad you like it!
Hi Phil very good your job.
Thank you, Alcino! 😊
You know Phil means business when he brings out the BFRG! LOL. Gorgeous little pot, Phil! The grain structure and differences really set this piece off.
Billy
LOL! You made me spit out my coffee, Billy! Hahaha.. I'll never look at that gouge the same, now.
Nice, it looks like elm tree. 👍
Thank you, Jean-Louis! Cheers!
WOW I am surprised u worried about spindle turning as u do a fantastic job on natural turning.
I just don't like it but I'll keep trying. Maybe one day I will! Thank you, Manjit! 😊
That is a really beautiful vase, Phil! Wow! A 2 inch roughing gouge! That is just amazing. Someone is bound to say that guys with big tools just want to show them off but I’m not gonna do that because that would be immature! LOL! Great video, buddy! 👍👍
LOL! You crack me up, Gord! Thank you my friend, I needed that!
Phil
Lovely vase in every respect Phil. You repeatedly say you are not a good spindle turner, well, this job makes a mockery of that theory mate, you can hold your head high after this piece. Your vase has great shape as you continue your normal practice of looking for what the wood has to say to you. The grain is brilliant & the filling of the crack this time was a master stroke as it seems to 'tie the vase together' along with the excellent finish. You made comment about not being able to read your name etc, on the bottom. I have mentioned it before & will do so again & that is that you can get silver pens & also white pens. Both would work well for you on the darker woods. Great job from the now multi-talented 'Shady Acres Woodshop' guy. Glad you were not directly affected by the fire. SO pleased to hear that. Stay safe & well. Don, from South Australia.
As always, Don, your comment makes me blush! 😊 The truth of the matter is, I CAN spindle turn but I'm so uncomfortable with it, not knowing or understanding what comes next, that it is a real chore. But, it does open up opportunities for specific pieces of wood so I will occasionally commit some time to it but I don't have to like it! LOL! Thank you, my friend!
For being a nuisance species here in the states and not a pretty tree at all, the grain looks wonderful in your piece! Good job Phil!
Thank you very much, David! 😊
Beautiful Phil!!
Thanks, Joey! 😊
Amazing vídeo e very beautiful classical vase
Thank you so much, Daniel! 😊
Hi Phil, That was a lovely piece of turning especially, as you say, as you don't do spindle turning. The shape is perfect and allows the grain to flow along the piece. One trick I have learned when filling cracks with CA and sawdust is to put one thin coat of sanding sealer around the crack fist and let it dry. Then apply the CA and fill the crack. The sanding sealer stops the CA from staining the surrounding wood to the crack. Look at me trying to give the Great Phil advice on turning. As others have said I'm glad you are safe from the fires and that everything was ok when you got home. Take care Phil. Cheers, Huw
Thank you, Huw! I'm safe and sound, good to be back home.
Phil
Hi Phil again another very nice piece of turning and finishing. Cheers from down under in New Zealand ..Humpy
Ah, New Zealand, John! I've never been but would love to. It's your Spring now, right? So green! Enjoy and thank you for watching! 😊
That was a tough piece with the crack making for a greater risk of flying apart...you made a very wise decision which is just another example of your talent and eye for design and craftmanship....even the finished color looks "olive"! Be well and stay healthy.
Thank you, Doc! 😊
Certainly a very interesting grain pattern Phil. And the shape of the vase is perfect for it. The grain seems to flow very evenly to the bottom.
Looking at the knots there is one to the left of the crack that looks like a little vase. Also a great choice on filling this crack it does not look like you tried to hide it but more like highlighting it as a feature. The Acks gave it a great finish as well.
Great job my friend looking forward to the next one!
Take care,
Gary
I had to go look, Gary. Yep, I spotted that little vase right where you said it was! I wish I would have given you a piece of this while you were here. I'd love to see what you could have come up with.
I hope to get to your video today but maybe not till tomorrow. Lots going on with two birthdays! Thank you, buddy!
Phil
Next time..found something myself I meant to bring.
Looks great. Thanks for sharing Phil.
Thanks for watching, Stan!
I’m fairly new to turning live in Britain and I tend to watch a lot of videos hoping to learn more and more, I got to say if I ever become half the Turner you are I’ll be a very happy man, I think you have fantastic skill your work is beautiful and you explain things so well so thanks for the videos.
Wow, thank you for your kind words, Robert! I learned to turn by watching videos, also. Likely hundreds of hours. One day it will just click!
Oh my, you made a beautiful vase! The grain of the wood was not very attractive when you started but you worked the piece into a stunner! Great Job!
😀
Eloquent vase!, love the shape and grain ❤️ good to hear you are safe from the fires
Thank you kindly, Maddie! 😊
Great video Phil. Love the design, I appreciate you stepping out of the box (bowl).lol
Glad you enjoyed it, Stan! Thank you so much! 😊
Happy Birthday! Beautiful vase, great grain, shape etc :)
