I of course went heavy on the nonfiction for the ebooks I selected. Shocking!

I have read Thymian und Steine by Sumaya Farhat-Naser (a Christian Palestinian) about 25 years ago and I loved it. Salt Houses was one of my favourites of last year. I hope you end up enjoying it as well!

    •  Před 7 měsíci +1

Oh, that sounds really interesting, thank you very much for the tip. And Salt Houses is so good! (almost finished).

_Against the Loveless World_ sounds interesting (I mean, they all do). I read some Mahmoud Darwish in Oct-Nov for the same reason, to learn more. It’s the least we can do.

    •  Před 7 měsíci

I've heard of Mahmoud Darwish, but havent read him yet, Thank you very much for the reminder!

I am reading The Parisian right now and LOVING it; I also bought Enter Ghost and will read that next (after re-reading Hamlet, because Enter Ghost is about a production of Hamlet put on in Palestine). Salt Houses is incredible - I love, love that book. Wonderful Book Haul!! Love a Book Haul with a theme and purpose.

    •  Před 7 měsíci +1

Oh, wonderful that you are so positive about those books! And I like the premise of Enter Ghost very much, and I will probably reread Hamlet as well before that. Happy reading, Sarah!

Gracias, Britta. I appreciate the fiction titles, some of which I just discovered are available through the Everand app! Minor Detail has still not arrived, fingers crossed. I've been reading and rereading my nonfiction books on Palestine.

    •  Před 7 měsíci

Oh, yes, fingers crossed Minor Details gets to you soon. It's a tough read, but brilliant. Any recs for nonfiction about Palestine?

    • @seriela
      @seriela Před 6 měsíci

@ Besides the already familiar ones I've read by men, thanks to your inspiration, I want to read women. Like Noura Erakat's Justice for Some, about the legal challenges for Palestinians. Fortunately, it's on Everand. I also want to read Hanan Ashwari's book This Side of Peace: A Personal Account. I hope Nada Tarbush will write a book someday. In the meantime I'll read her viral address to the UN, as a Palestinian representative, online.

Thank you for this video, Britta! I am just halfway through Morning in Jenin. I recently read Sarah Schulman's Conflict is not Abuse - Overstating harm, community responsibility, and the duty of repair. I thought it to be a very courageous, thought provoking text looking at different cases were conflict can get framed as abuse in order for the other to get punished, from intimate (queer, as it is her focus) relationships, to the police, to the state (eg Hiv criminalization in Canada), and the effects of trauma and supremacy thinking. The last chapter is on Gaza 2014, and I just started reading it on October 6 which was a chilling coincidence. Anyway, sorry for writing half a pamflet, for me it was a book to read with red ears.

    •  Před 7 měsíci

No need to apologize!! I‘ve marked the Schulman-book to read, thank you so much for the tip. ❤

I also like to learn about the world through reading. At the moment I’m reading ‘The Hundred Year’s War On Palestine’ by Rashid Khalidi.

    •  Před 7 měsíci +1

Oh, that is a great book! If you are interested, the booktokker I mention in the show notes (Sim Kern) did a video about her reading it: czcams.com/video/BqXMe0idZU8/video.html

Britta, I absolutely love The Arsonists City by Hala Alyan and Enter Ghost by Isabella Hammad. Can I recommend poetry by Mosab Abu Toha who just about made it out of Gaza and anything edited by Rafaat Alareer who sadly was killed.

    •  Před 7 měsíci

Happy to hear you liked those books. And thank you very much for the recommendation! It’s so incredibly sad that Refaat Alareer was killed. 😢

Wonderful! Books to add to my reading list. :) If you're ever interested in a queer Palestinian academic lens, I'd recommend the work of Dr. Sa'ed Atshan. I'm about 75% through his book "Queer Palestine and the Empire of Critique" and it's fascinating.

    •  Před 7 měsíci +1

Glad you enjoyed the selection. And thank you very much for the recommendation, that book sounds fascinating! ❤️

Hi Britta, thanks for this video!
I recommend Mourid Barghouti's memoirs and Mohammed El-Kurd's poetry collection "Rifqa".
I remember Mohammed El-Kurd and his twin sister when their family and neighbours were illegally evicted from their homes in East Jerusalem a couple of years ago. They left an impression on me and made me interested in reading "Rifqa". I recently read it and found it to be very good.
I would also like to add that Mahmoud Darwish's prose poem - "Memory for Forgetfulness" - and his interviews - "Palestine as a Metaphor" - came highly recommended.
"Palestine as a Metaphor" is a series of five interviews by a Lebanese poet, a Syrian literary critic, three Palestinian writers, and an Israeli journalist.
I haven't read these two books, so I cannot personally recommend them. They came highly recommended by Antastesialit here on booktube and I'll be reading both soon, although not in English.
Women authors: I tried "The Blue Between Sky and Water" but I don't think Susan Abulhawa is for me.
I'm interested in "Sharon and My Mother-in-Law" by Suad Amiry, "Velvet" by Huzama Habayeb, "Das Tor" by Sahar Khalifa and "Palestina en pedazos" by Lina Meruane (hopefully to be translated soon.)

    •  Před 7 měsíci +1

Thank you very much for all the tips / recommendations, that's fantastic! ❤️ Pity about Abulhawa, but sometimes an author just doesn't work for you.
