Gar Love Topwaters!

- čas přidán 4. 08. 2017
- In this video I go to a local creek with my friend Will and fish for spotted gar. The gar were sitting on top and really wanted the small topwater we were throwing. Unfortunately they are super hard to hook and we only ended up catching two out of a bunch of misses. This footage is awesome and it shows the habits of spotted gar well. Please leave a like if you want to see more gar videos!

You don't have to set the hook that hard using treble hooks. Especially with their hard mouths, let them bite it, reel in the slack, and apply pressure. Let the other hooks have time to grip too and your hookup ratio will increase big time.
You need to tie on a piece of frayed rope. The gar attack it and their teeth get tangled so they don't come off
shout out to 618 Fishing that was smart af
lt wasnt Nick from 618's idea, people have used rope for a long time.
Yea rope fishing gar is old af
The Bass Fanatic good idea but who eats them?
An Old timer was just explaining this rope method to me while shore fishing today haha definitely an old trick.
Was beginning to think he didn't have hooks on that lure, how many did he miss, damn?
gars are very hard to hook
belldn3 how many have you hooked? Gar is the hardest fish to catch . You re actually not even suppose to use hooks. Don't believe me figure it out. Rope lure
You try far fishing you’ll understand
I missed about 6 gar strikes yesterday myself, very hard but fun fish to catch
@@JimHerbertOutdoors i’ve caught 4 gar on 3ft my spider man pole in the last week using worms they aren’t THAT hard to catch
Really love the camera quallity and footage in this video. Great job!
+The Fish Whisperer Hey, I sent you an email to your gmail account a while back (22/7), please check it out and let me know what you think?
Great video. I've had decent luck with a top-water buzz bait w/ a single hook. I'd recommend trying that!
Loved the video!!
haha great job on the filming those slow mo footages r great. lol those gars r tricky to hook into even though they bite the lure.
The Livetarget popper frog works super good for bass, and it has good hooks, so it would probably work well for those gar
Whopper plopper I normally hook them pretty well
90 series
I’ve used a jitter bug and that worked pretty good
SEMO Outdoors yes! Caught a pretty big one today on the Whopper Plopper!
I have never caught a gar this is awesome!
try single hooks next time
that would give you even less of a chance
Really great video.. I enjoyed that keep it up
Stop setting the hook so hard you will hook up a lot more often
had a large gar break my 20 lb line yesterday. Got a chance to see it before it did but couldn't tell if it was an alligator gar or a spotted gar due to it being dusk. Fun as hell to fight with. I am going to respool with some 30 and try again.
"Small poppers work great of repotted far" then he misses every blow up
Nico Galeano love repotted gar
When they blow up on the bait let them turn around then set the hook
I love to watch your videos
Sick footage
Awesome vid I usually let the car eat it a lit more then I set the hook
This is one of my favorite species to chase. One thing thag works for me is to set the hook sideways/down, as the underside of the gar's mouth is much softer and setting thr hook upwards just drives the points into the bony jaw which is almost impossible to penetrate
Your so good both of all
Omg man thats soo coo i been trying to catch my first gar in the kansas river
Great video! Sounds like there was some major line twisting going-on around 2:35.
Great video
Do you still feed the bass turtles and catfish? What do you feed them on? Is it like a big pond? I have. A lake house but it has a big lake
Topwater bass lures work great
Finally after 1000 casts success
Spotted gar are so Aggressive they love topwaters or any lure really haha. Had like a 5in one chase a chatterbait and swipe at it once
Any updates on the blind bass
That's just wild how they hammer that plug
hook up ratio is perfect..
use a big swivel and 10 inches of 3/16 nylon rope unravel about half of rope and work it like a top water bait. u can also tye a treble on the end of rope
Id recommend stinger hooks on the tail
They are pretty much a nuisance down here where I'm from. Trying to top water fish for bass is next to impossible.
Nice work men
Catching big ones on flukes are really fun
He said he had a big one, when I saw it I had to laugh. I know it's a spotted gar but here in Louisiana there's a lot more gator gar
Good video
Grasshopper. Can get them from Walmart, they work well
I use small squarebills for gar works great.
Awesome vid. Hook up ratio just sucks on those fish. Try setting the hook to the side, really hard.
The problem here is that Gar have a bony mouth, so hooking them cleanly is very difficult because the hook won't sink into the flesh in their mouth. When you go to set the hook it smacks into those bone plates and just slides off instead of digging into the flesh like on other fish. There are a few tricks to get around this problem, but the easiest way is to sharpen you hooks after each catch. Make those hooks super sharp.
you need to open you're line and let the bait go in the Garfish mouth, then after about 30 seconds, you start pulling it in. that's how u catch gar
you only do that with bait with lowers you can set the hook instantly and still catch them
I would think a Whopper Plopper would work if you have one?
Whopper ploppers work great too
@The Fish Whisperer do you live in utah?
Bro where do you guys find gar I fish bayous in Houston all the time and have never caught it even seen a gar
Hit me up I know a good spot right off the beltway!!
Car r differnet it takes a while before the actually take it so u have to wait or real in
i live in katy and i would like to know in what creek this was and what area
Animal Bro same bro
Animal Bro try buffalo bayou by Herman park in Houston it shouldn't be more than an hour drive or brazos bend st park!
Hey guys you should checkout a group of Facebook called .. saltwater lure fishing
They have loads of info on every lure 👍🏻
I fish for Bucketmouths in S.FL, on a recent trip while using a bone colored Bomber spook walking bait I caught a monstrous what I assume was a Gar. I didn't have my scale with me this thing was like over 3 ft long maybe 4 ft and thick as if not thicker than my arm. I thought I had a huge Bass but as I reeled him in closer I realized my huge Bucketmouth was not to be.....was this a FL Gar or other species if anyone can reply out there on the interwebs that would be appreciated. Thanks.
Man i need to find out where do u go fishing at i live in Houston tx need to look for a good spot to fish at
Isaac Martinez quick city fishing spot is the bayous lots of fish but don't eat em
Let the gar eat the lure for about 3 secconds.....then set the hook low......and you will have yourself one big, sharp toothed, meat eating fish!
is it not legal to snag gar where you live? where i used to live they were overpopulated and very dangerous.
cool
u can use a poping soft frog
Give them a few seconds to carry it then set it
Post another video of your pet gar!
Maybe Swap the hooks out, braided line, and a stiffer rod.
Raul Vitela Maybe you need to shut the fuck up!
frayed rope gets em
Use like a hula popper
Try a trailing hook.
Do u have to use steel leaders for gar??
Some people do, most dont that Ive seen. Yeah, theres a chance their teeth will snip the line.
Mike Mower thxs i love to say h gar
Cheetos with a single hook in side.
Jerkbaits have better hook ups with gars cause its long and narrow like their mouths. Also try rope lures/flies.
Try a white shoe lace and one treble hook will catch em every time
GeeSee's Life Adventures I've tried this but it didn't cast very far.. how do you cast them?
Tiny torpedo works great
Wait about 10 seconds to set the hook, let them run with it a bit and don’t set the hook as hard
hi guys what kind of fish would you rather to catch your rather catch a crocodile a snake or a goldfish I left the comment below tell me what's your name is Walker where I can
No catches?
dont set the hook. just reel into them like ur using a crankbait for bass.
bassbeast117 Ok, Mr expert. IDIOT!
bassbeast117 Stupid gamer.

why dont you try saying something helpful, instead of being a useless internet troll that does nothing but shit on people for having an opinion
ยังไม่เคยกินเลยอะ
Hey the ultra light popper is not a bad lure dude your fishing for gar is made for bass and other fish not gar
Set the hook to early try waiting about a minute and a half
Nah, after 2 seconds the far would realize it’s a hard bait and spit it. That way only works with live or cut bait.
Try using a whopper plopper that's what works the best for me
Rebel popr
You have to give them time to eat it don't just set the hook
Where your hat right
667th liker here.... The previous number was bothering me
Go smaller and the gar can get it in their mouth better and you can hook it better
Try a rope lure cause there teeth get stuck
gar are reely hard to hook in the first place you need nyolon rope
You need to let them eat it a bit longer and small whopper ploppers
You set the hoock much to fast , wait 5- 15 mins after he take it.
Need smaller popper
We're you actually trying to hook them or just get the blow ups?
Their upper jaw is solid bone, nearly impossible to hook them unless they get a treble hook lodged in their throat. Best ways to catch them are frayed nylon rope, or a bow and arrow.
try live minnows
my uncle always told me to put tin foil in the hooks and it will tangle into thier teeth
I've experienced catching over 6 1/2 feet! Not bragging, just advising!
Although, I do live in southern TX.!!!
lmao
Nice vid
Use a frog
You're trying too hard to set the hook alligator gar has a really tough mouth let him do the work
Bad at setting hooks
season west license college slow poll abuse
Top water baits? Fly fishing is great for everything, ok maybe not blue whale or shark.
The Livetarget popper frog works super good for bass, and it has good hooks, so it would probably work well for those gar
