Gar Love Topwaters!

  • In this video I go to a local creek with my friend Will and fish for spotted gar. The gar were sitting on top and really wanted the small topwater we were throwing. Unfortunately they are super hard to hook and we only ended up catching two out of a bunch of misses. This footage is awesome and it shows the habits of spotted gar well. Please leave a like if you want to see more gar videos!

    You don't have to set the hook that hard using treble hooks. Especially with their hard mouths, let them bite it, reel in the slack, and apply pressure. Let the other hooks have time to grip too and your hookup ratio will increase big time.

    You need to tie on a piece of frayed rope. The gar attack it and their teeth get tangled so they don't come off

    This is one of my favorite species to chase. One thing thag works for me is to set the hook sideways/down, as the underside of the gar's mouth is much softer and setting thr hook upwards just drives the points into the bony jaw which is almost impossible to penetrate

  • @Lightwish01
    @Lightwish01 Před 7 lety

    The problem here is that Gar have a bony mouth, so hooking them cleanly is very difficult because the hook won't sink into the flesh in their mouth. When you go to set the hook it smacks into those bone plates and just slides off instead of digging into the flesh like on other fish. There are a few tricks to get around this problem, but the easiest way is to sharpen you hooks after each catch. Make those hooks super sharp.

  • @tamannarahmani9323

    I fish for Bucketmouths in S.FL, on a recent trip while using a bone colored Bomber spook walking bait I caught a monstrous what I assume was a Gar. I didn't have my scale with me this thing was like over 3 ft long maybe 4 ft and thick as if not thicker than my arm. I thought I had a huge Bass but as I reeled him in closer I realized my huge Bucketmouth was not to be.....was this a FL Gar or other species if anyone can reply out there on the interwebs that would be appreciated. Thanks.
