Jody and the Kid

- In the early 2000's, Dish Network had audio channels that played just black screens with audio, with text showing the name of the artist, song title, and record label floating around the screen. Pap often kept the satellite at his house tuned to the classic country station. They played shuffled music from a pretty wide collection of songs. Of course, they played the standard fare, like Haggard and Williams, etc., but they also played songs from some singers that I hadn't heard before, like Ernie Ashworth, Henson Cargill, and Wilma Burgess. If you heard them before, you should check out their music, especially Burgess singing, "Misty Blue" and Cargill's "Skip a Rope." The channel played a song called "I'm a Fool" and "Jody and the Kid." I often heard the music from another room in the house, and when these songs came on, I tried to recognize the singer. At first, I thought it sounded a little like Eddy Arnold, then I though it sounded like Eddy Arnold combined with Burl Ives. When I finally happened to be in the room at the same time the songs were playing, I discovered that it was Roy Drusky. He had a very unique voice, and he exercised impressive control over it. The note that he held over many beats in the chorus of "I'm a Fool" is a good example of what I'm talking about. He also did a fantastic job on "All My Friends are Gonna Be Strangers." For around 10 years, I thought of Jody and the Kid only as Drusky's song. At some point, someone gave me a CD of Kris Kristofferson (I think it might have been Matt, Tipper's husband), and I learned that Kristofferson wrote the song. I wasn't surprised. I knew that Kristofferson is something of a literary genius. Something about the melody and alliteration of this song feels and sounds just like a dewy morning in the spring or summer... There are several country songs that deal with this same topic: an older boy who only gradually or reluctantly comes to view a younger girl romantically. The Glaser Brothers had one called, "Big Brother." In most of the songs, the boy/man realizes it too late, and the girl/woman moves on to an interest in someone else. Jody and the Kid is the only one I can think of offhand where they wind up together. However, the ending is still sad. When the narrator says, "It gets a little lonesome when I hear somebody saying, 'Looky yonder, there goes Jody and the Kid," I can't help but conclude that the wife/mother has died. Perhaps it could be that she simply left the man and abandoned the daughter, but something makes me feel that it's more likely that she died. You can let me know in the comments what you think caused the separation. I think the song is better for having not explicitly explained what happened. A little mystery is good in any song. This song is nothing like the first three in the series, but I realized that there is at least one connection: someone dies in all four songs. When I thought about 2-3 other songs that I had considered including in this year's series, I realized that someone dies in all of them too! I don't think I'm so morbid that I gravitated towards songs with death. I think that death is just naturally a part of most great stories. I think this video turned out pretty good, considering that Tipper didn't really know the song, and we were a bit out of tune. The reason we had done it three times before this take is because the Flip Cam failed to record the first few attempts, and we had to switch over to Tipper's camera. I'm not sure why the Flip Cam failed us. It may have reached the end of its lifespan. I think the audio is actually better with it (when it works) than with Tipper's camera, though her camera was much more expensive! Don't tell her I said that. :-) Anyway, I think I've rambled enough for now. Thanks so much for watching this year's series. Please tune in next month for a birthday tribute to the great Ira Louvin. Love this song Paul and Tipper Thank you God Bless
Just fantastic. Yep, I gotta a crush on Paul.
This is my favorite song Paul sings! It reminds me of a Seals & Crofts song called King of Nothing. Beautiful! ❤
When I heard Granny say, "Once upon a time," I thought she was going to tell us a story. Instead Paul told us one.
I had never heard this song and it was awesome. I'm crying like a baby now. So much talent in your family. Paul has an amazing voice , and I love listening to yall.
Paul has an incredible voice. I'm surprised he hasn't tried to get his own recordings. Awesome guitar player too
Wow. What a voice and he can really play that guitar. Loved it. How nice to see people use the great talents God blessed them with. Very inspirational, Tipper.😘
This was lovely just like a lullaby and Hey I am no gossip but Listen up cos I'm only going to tell you once. THAT WAS FANTASTIC!
Uh, … should have said I have a crush on Paul’s voice 😮
Just a great duet with Tipper. Enjoyed immensely. 👍🏻
China Berry trees reminded me of China Berry fights we had as kids…one of the games we played for fun
What a beautiful song!
That was lovely, what a beautiful song.
Tipper u are a younger version of Grannie, do enjoy everything your family shares with. Paul has a super voice
He can sing....champion.
Well written intro. You really made that song better.....thanks...music top class.
I absolutely love this song! Thanks to Kris for writing it, Paul for the singing and Tipper & Paul on the guitars! ❤️❤️❤️
I think I see Mr Tom Clark’s little gnome figure on your buffet. I am not sure which one it is because I can not see it well enough but I have a large collection of little guys. My husband gave me some of them on special occasions and we would go to his signings every time he came Dallas so mine are all signed. I love his work. I even have Seven Up which is his largest and it was signed twice by Mr. Clark. I was listening/watching Tipper & Paul doing Joey and The Kid, which is my favorite !! 💕💞
I love hearing Granny’s voice at the beginning of the Video.
Beautiful what a blessing you all are🌸
1 of my favorite Kristofferson songs from my favorite album of his. 👍
Thanks, DP. It was a truly great album. In the configuration that I have, it also included "Casey's Last Ride." Man, what a song that one is!
Fantastic job on this song. Brings a tear.
Beautiful song Paul & Tipper . I have a friend Jody I have to let her hear this loved it!
Beautiful thanks tipper and Paul
We appreciate it, Frank!
That's so pretty. Tipper, I love to watch you play the guitar.
This was one of my daddy’s favorite songs. Thank you.
I absolutely loved this ❤❤❤
I loved the introduction of Granny saying "Once upon a time." And I love this song by you two. Pauls voice is very unique and Tipper plays an exact bass on her guitar. Glad to see this always that is why I came back to watch it. Hope all is well with Miss Cindy.
I love this video! It's in my playlist now, too. Yeah, I've gotta comment again.
Ya'll are so sweet & your talent & love for one another warms my heart! You're 2 beautiful souls & I love ya'll so much!
Granny & Pap really raised you so exceptionally well! The entire Family is remarkable! You know we adore your musical talents. Thank you so very much. Your Family has made such a difference in my life in the past year ! God is Great! Thank you All! God's Speed Only. ♥ 💛🤟🙏🙏
Great song!! Never heard this tune before, but as I was listening it kinda reminded me of Sunday Morning Coming Down (written by Kristofferson). When I read ur notes I wasn't surprised that Kristofferson wrote this as well. I've always equated Kristofferson's songs w/ loss/soul sadness of some type.
Look up Roy drusky he's the original singer
Thanks, Johnny. As I've said before, I love it when I can introduce a good song to a music lover like yourself!
As always Beautiful
C.D., thanks for being a regular viewer!
Aww, beautiful, love this.
Beautiful
Great job Paul and Tipper I enjoyed your song and I hope you two have a great week.God bless you all.
Thanks, Jimmy! We hope you have a great week too! God bless you.
Thank you.@@BlindPigAndTheAcorn
Beautiful! You both did super fine job.
It's so easy to bounce my head to keep time. But I see Tipper does also.
Paul,
WOW! it seems this years story songs came and went quickly. I really loved this one, especially the melody it was a soothing song as it drew me into this love story. I, too, think that the way their love story progressed from the innocence of friendship as she was much younger than him. One day, he sees her for the beautiful young lady she has grown to be and how he realized he loved her. It is sad, but I believe this love story would only be separated by circumstances out of their control.
So when it speaks of his loneliness, I believe it's his thoughts of losing her in death. All he has now is his memories of her and their daughter, which ultimately a part of her will live on.
Thanks to all for a great song and wonderful music.
Debbie
P.s. Tell Granny I am going to make that Holy Smoke Desert looked fantastic😊
Thanks, Debbie. I agree. From the early verses, it sounds like she idolized him far too much to have ever left him. I think death is the more likely cause of separation. You won't be disappointed in that Holy Smoke Cake! It's delicious. Sometimes, I make it with two boxes of pudding, just to beef it up some, but it's good with just one.
What a beautiful song. I absolutely love it. Jody and the Kid is brand new to me, and it demonstrates that my knowledge of Kris Kristofferson and his music is not as extensive as I've imagined. Thanks Paul and Tipper (and Kris, of course). 👍
Look up roy drusky he's the original singer
Thanks, Noah. So glad you liked it!
I loved that and wished it didn't end. Tipper, you are an immaculate bass player, and God I love Paul's Voice he could sing to me all day long. It's just that comforting. Paul sings like your Daddy. Thank you both for a fantastic, wonderful exhilarating job. It just made me shed a tear. I love Tipper's contagious smiles.
Patrick, thank you so much for that wonderful comment! Have a great week!
So beautiful ❤
Very sweet song.you two sound great ❤❤❤❤
My favorite. ❤
The way that song is put together reminded me of my grandparents in the late 60’s and early 70’s. Made me yearn for those happy simple sunny days playing at their house. Thank you. Mary
Thanks, Mary. I think I know what you mean. Songs can really take us back.
Paul, that was one of the best I've heard from you and your Sis. Thanks for sharing with us
Great cover guys, one of the best I've heard.
I loved it. So good.
What a sweet song! So precious! Is it just the two of you on this song? Precious Sibling's! Im an only child, Tipper, I sure wish I had just 1 Brother as Special as both of yours. I love to hear ya'll! This is another new one for my Bray this weekend! Thank you! I love all of you!! God Bless You!

GREAT! One of my favorite songs. Such a rare gem. One of the best story songs
Thanks, Airgun. It's a good one for sure. Sounds so real. Makes me wonder if Kristopherson had a relationship like that or knew someone close who did.
Wow gr8 song !!
Glad you liked it, Renee! Thanks
I had not heard this song in years. My parents gave me my first Kris Kristofferson album in about 1972, I think, and this song was on that album. I wore that record out, there were some musical jewels included on this album! Thank you for sharing it! I love the memories that flooded my soul as you played and sang Jody and the Kid!
❤ Wow. Beautiful music, singing, pickin' and great to see you on camera, Tipper! Have really enjoyed this music series. Much thanks to you and Paul, Corie and Katie and the original music from Paul, Pap and all.
Thanks, LM! Tipper's bass really helped on this one!
I stopped by to listen to this lovely song again. I really love your voice Paul you are quite a singer with a voice like velvet. Tipper, I love how you are so accurate with the bass it is just a lovely addition. Thanks for sharing. Wonderful performance.

Linda, we appreciate your kind comment!
Thank you very much. That was very kind of you to share that beautiful song.
Our pleasure, Willy! Very kind of you to listen and comment!
The classic country tear jerker formula. There were so many of the story songs in classic country and yes, not surprised about Kris Kristoffherson. Not to say these songs were not unique, each were as much as the country artist that recorded them. Everyone had their own sound. The results were mostly spectacular. This is a great song.
Thanks, Sondra. I agree!
That was beautiful. Tipper, we want to hear you sing.
Absolutely beautiful
Thanks for sharing
Penny, thanks for listening and commenting!
Such an easy song to listen to. It's calming. It brings quietness to the soul.
Mighty fine! I remember when this song came out back when about all we had was radio or record player.
Thanks, Mary. It's an oldie but a goodie. :-)
Just wonderful!! Thanks Paul and Tipper. Makes my day to hear y’all play!
This is my youth. Kris Kristofferson wrote some great songs. Thank you for this.
Beautiful song. I have never heard this one before. 💞
Thanks, Kathryn. Glad to introduce you to this great song!
Absolutely love this!!
Love, Love, Love this song!!! New to me!! Beautifully sang and I loved the bass of the guitar in this song!! Thank you so much for sharing!! God bless and live to all! 💕🤗🙏🏻
I first heard Kris Kristofferson sing this when I was about twenty back in seventies. Thanks again!
2024 can’t come soon enough for more of this beautiful music. Paul has a unique voice that lends a special flavor to any song.
Wow! Thanks, Shazskay! Lord willing, we'll do our train series in November of '23.

Thanks, Alicia. Hope everything is good there!
Wow! That was just beautiful!! 👏🏼 👏🏼 Thank you for sharing that with all of us ❤
Thanks, Denise! So glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you Paul for a good song well sung. I looked it up on the internet thinking it sounded like a song Joan Baez would have recorded but the only thing I see is that Kris Kristofferson wrote it.
Thanks, Tom. Yes, it's one of those songs that doesn't fall neatly into a specific genre or musical category.
Thanks, very well done.
Thank you very much, Ron!
What a sweet song! I never heard it before, I loved it!
Thanks, Leigh Ann. It does tell a sweet story. Glad to introduce the song to you!
Very nice.
Thanks so much, Mr. Hicks!
Hallelujah
Great singing and playing
Thanks so much, Sandy!
So good. We found you about 10 years ago. The song Paul and your daddy sang was Weeping Willow Tree. We were sad to learn of your daddy’s passing. Sending Gods peace from New Mexico.
Thank you, Barbara. Pap's tenor on Weeping Willow Tree was really good, made the song, in my opinion. Thanks so much for listening and for commenting.
Love the music and he has a wonderful voice
Thanks so much, Joana. :-)
Just so beautiful….
Thanks, Diane! Glad you enjoyed the song.
Thank you, Paul and Tipper.😊🇨🇦
Thank you, Gary!
Beautiful song 🎵 reminds me of Bobby Goldsboro's song "Honey". Paul I enjoyed the story song series and the video beginning with Granny saying " Once upon a time".
Thanks, Cheryl. That's another great love/story song. I really like the recording that Charlie Louvin did of it, but I couldn't find it on CZcams.
Beautiful song! I have to say when you first started, it reminded me of Gentle on My Mind by Glenn Campbell. My favorite line in the song was, "Looky yonder, there goes" reminds me so much of my late dad. He said that phrase a lot and it made me smile. I like Kris Kristofferson as a writer, but sometimes his singing isn't my favorite. You all do sing a lot of sad songs, but after thinking about it...a lot ofsongs are sad. Thanks again for performing for us. I love your music.
Thanks, Karen! I can see why it reminds you of Gentle on My Mind. The first chord change is the same type. You're right: Kristopherson was blessed with great skill and imagination as a writer but not with great singing ability. I've heard him say the same thing himself many times. Imagine if he had been gifted with the singing ability of a Merle Haggard or Marty Robbings... He might have been the biggest performer of all time. He certainly had the songs.
