Moloko, an Irish-English electronic music duo formed in Sheffield, England, comprised vocalist Róisín Murphy and producer Mark Brydon. Their fusion of electronica and dance music propelled them to fame, highlighted by UK top 10 singles like "The Time Is Now" (2000) and "Familiar Feeling" (2003), and the international hit remix of "Sing It Back" (1999) by Boris Dlugosch.
The duo's journey began in 1994 when Murphy and Brydon met at a party in Sheffield. Inspired by a memorable chat-up line, they adopted the name Moloko, derived from the narcotic-filled milk drink in "A Clockwork Orange." Their debut album, "Do You Like My Tight Sweater?" (1995), introduced their eclectic sound, blending elements of funk, trip hop, and dance.
Despite initial modest success, Moloko's breakthrough came with the remix of "Sing It Back," propelling them into the global spotlight. Subsequent albums like "I Am Not a Doctor" (1998) and "Things to Make and Do" (2000) further solidified their reputation, with hits like "The Time Is Now" cementing their place in the electronic music scene.
However, personal and creative differences led to the duo's disbandment in 2004. Both Murphy and Brydon pursued solo careers, with Murphy releasing her debut solo album, "Ruby Blue," in 2005. Despite occasional collaborations and reissues of their music, Moloko remained inactive as a band.
Moloko's music, often described as alternative dance or electropop, showcased their unique blend of genres, characterized by Murphy's distinctive vocals and Brydon's innovative production. Their legacy lives on through their groundbreaking contributions to electronic music and their enduring influence on future generations of artists.
