this is actually an amazing piece of history! doesn't seem realistic, but I hope 2strokes are coming back some time :/
In qualifying tune at the fastest tracks, this engine produced a record 400 horsepower per liter. In race trim they kept the power at about 175-185. At max power, the reliability would suffer, but even detuned this engine dominated the grid.
An absolute work of art for a 170hp engine with a 6 speed quick change transmission and clutch.

the only 2 stroker running a single crank, had 4 different F.O. & the first as a 66 degree F.O.(drone motor) to tame the power delivery, maxed out in race specs to 185HP to keep it reliable.

185hp, this was the last K812 config design, hence the 12(yr) top speed always depended on the gearing & final drive sprockets, the NSR 500 never got to 200hp, Shinito Ito in 87/88 was the first Hoonda rider to crack 200mp/h= 324km/h

The yesteryear of V4 500cc 185hp can easily outrun current 1000cc 4stroke 245hp bikes..The 250 V twin 2 stroke 85hp can easily dominate current 600cc inline4 moto2 bikes

FichDichInDemArsch The Saabs were terribly limited in their design. Piston port intake with waaaay old porting design, and no expansion chambers? And they were sub-1000cc displacement. If you put a 750 Kawasaki engine in an old Saab, it'd rip. Put an 800cc snowmobile motor in one and you have real power. Put an ETEC outboard motor in one and you can tow trailers.

The 500 could not compete with the liter bikes. It was 10 mph slower and down on torque. If it was faster they would still be using them....
I might add. The factories seen the writing on the wall when the Britten 1000 showed up and gave them a shellacking.....
Master Chief 00117 The Britten was a big deal in BoTT, which is four-stroke twins only. It would still be at a disadvantage to a 1000cc four-cylinder, which is the same reason Ducati gets a significant displacement advantage over a 4cyl bike today. CC for CC, two-strokes are still much more powerful than even the newest four-stroke. They killed the two-strokes in GP racing because the manufacturers wanted to use the series to market their big, profitable four-stroke road bikes.

I bet the BHP is a lot. I prefer 2 stroke over 4 strokes for some reason. I guess it the power they produce.

This is why you can't compare champions like Doohan who rode this beast vs recent champions like Marquez on a completely different bike.
When I spoke to Mick Doohan at the MotoGP in Buriram in 2018, he had nothing but praise for Marc Marquez, and said he's an incredible rider. He also said he had absolutely no doubt the he, or a number of the other top riders, could ride a 500. (Note, he didn't say "all" the top riders!)
Nah Doohan is the greatest ever. Not many riders could do what he did when he got injured all while riding probably the scariest bikes of road racing and have those titles. Legend.

The only one's that approached 180 were the last two years of the fuel injected engines...with the final 2001 engine being closer to 200 HP.....at 215 lbs...man would that be fun.

yes back then but todays 1000cc engines cost 5x the amount too build and are so much more complex
Didn't know much about these 2 strokes but I am surprised to see a Japanese engine with a dry clutch 🧐 I always thought that was just a Ducati thing.
Real race bikes all typically came with dry clutches, yamaha production road racers such as TZ125, 250, 350, 500, and 750 all did. Even some of the street legal TZR250’s had dry clutches. The Honda street legal two strokes also came with dry clutches as well as their production race bikes like RS125 and 250, and let’s not forget the NSR500V.

Next year (2013) Honda comes out with the CBR1000RR V4...seems to me (I aint no engineer) that a straight 4 would produce more power in a shorter amount of time

If you have to ask, you couldn't afford one.
Also, you'll never see a modern motorcycle manufacturer releases a 2-stroke engine as it would never pass emissions. There are also no racing series that they could compete in. These engines are cool, but you're better of checking around for a used two stroke sport bike instead of waiting for the impossible.
Check out the Rotax ETEC voice coil direct fuel injection 2-stroke engine that Skidoo has used to power their snowmobiles for more than a decade.
