Bernard Bresslaw, was a towering figure both in physical stature and comedic talent, who found fame in iconic British comedies like the "Carry On" series. Although his first love was performing on stage in classics such as Shakespeare's 'Much Ado About Nothing'
Standing at 6 feet 7 inches, his presence on screen was unmistakable. Bresslaw's career spanned decades, showcasing his versatility as an actor from stage to screen. However, his life met a tragic end when he passed away suddenly at the age of 59, collapsing just as he was about to perform at the Regent's Park Open Air Theatre, leaving behind a legacy of laughter and an unforgettable mark on British entertainment.
Please join me as I take flowers to Bernard’s final resting place at Golders Green Crematorium and remember his life and career.

I have always felt that Bernard Bresslaw was underrated, but I never knew he was also a Shakespearean actor. A big man with a big talent.

I think it's complicated - I don't believe Sid was unpopular but I think there were issues occasionally as you would expect - but on the whole I think they all enjoyed each others company - I did read that there were divided loyalties about Sid's affair with Babs - and of course Sid had jealousy issues as Bernard indicated - it's an interesting one!
You probably know, that both Bernard Bresslaw and Sid James were of spiritual faith Judaism, a decidedly monotheisic religion, developed by the ancient Hebrews of Israel.
Jews, persecuted by German Nazis, were not the most popular sect in Europe throughout the 1930s (NB Sir Oswald Moseley's Blackshirts in the East End of London's violent race riots), until the end of World War 2 and beyond; inspiring an understandable clannishness among 'the descendants of Abraham'.
he lives on in our hearts as well, a screen legend truly missed.

Bernard Bresslaw had watchability as well as feeling that he was really a lovely person.

Claim to Fame: I was held by Bernard when I was about 1 and a half. Too Many Crooks - hearse going downhill, filmed on our street in Barn Hill, Wembley. My mum (with me a babe in arms) stood by the gate and watched the action - Bernard came over, chatted up my mum and gave me a bit of a cuddle. Sadly I don't remember it.

I remember George Cole as the would-be undertaker - "he was a policeman, like yourself". The policeman queries the small feet of the 'corpse; - " well it just shows you can't believe all that nonsense about copp.....er, um. policemen's feet"
I remember as a boy seeing Bernard on stage at Greenwich Theatre. Quite a thrill to see a Carry On star.

Thank you for this video. I have always enjoyed Bernard Bresslaw's acting . He had an enormous talent for self-depracatory humour . Its a shame he never got some other opportunities . Now you have told me , it won't be possible to unremember Bernard ballet dancing , even though I have never seen him do so . What a treat that would be to watch . Glad to hear Max Bygraves was a friend . I served him a few times when I worked in a hotel bar in Bournemouth as a young man . He was exactly the same kind of gentleman I imagine Bernard was . They would have been natural friends , one imagines . Thanks again x

I saw him at the Wilde Theatre in Bracknell in the 1980s, doing an evening as Falstaff. His love of Shakespeare shone through :)

In 1990, I saw Bernard Bresslaw on stage at the Regents Park Open Air Theatre (the same venue where he was to die so tragically 3 years later) in Shakespeare's "Twelth Night". His performance as Malvolio, a vain and pompous authority figure, was impressive and, of course, far removed from the 'Bernie' persona, the guileless foil to Sid James, that he played often in the Carry Ons. He was a fine actor. He showed me that in this performance that I saw.
I enjoyed this tribute to him. He deserves the bow, front and centre stage, that it provides. Thank you!

I bloody absolutely loved Bernard he was just pure joy to watch. .as a child I loved carry on films and was always really pleased when he was in the films. I only wish that he was with us for much longer 💜

He was simply a genius actor along with many others from that generation. Loved all his roles in the Carry On films but I'm laughing as I write this thinking about his role as Sockett. RIP Bernard Bresslaw

Thanks dear, this brought back happy memories. I was music director for The Beggar's Opera at the Northcott Theatre, Exeter when Bernard played Macheath. He had a fine bass voice and he was a lovely man, who I got to know during the run. He loved to visit the antique shops in the area also.

I was also at RADA and what a lovely and fitting commemoration of the life of a star of my childhood. I shared a dressing room with Jack Douglas a lovely man also and rather regret not 'prying' into his work with the other Carry On stars including Bernard. Thank you, wonderfully researched.

Off screen he was a very well spoken person, he ended up in comedy but was a very accomplished actor, I remember when he died and like many others was both shocked and saddened as he wasn’t that old, nice post

This gentleman died on my 50th birthday. My Birmingham bookshop Blitzgeist was visited by him & we nattered about The Army Game, his love of London & his sons ETC. A nice guy.

A beautiful tribute worthy of the legend himself. Thank you, Shar. Another hero of mine. He was universally loved and apparently gracious, even when people told him how great he was as 'One Round' in "The Ladykillers" {1955}. That was Danny Green.

Do you know I hadn't even considered that Katie Johnson was around at the same time as Jack the Ripper!!! Gaslight makes me think of Jimmy Hanley - I've met his son - ohhhhh and the wonderful Anton Walbrook - I've visited his grave and taken flowers (though I've not done a video on him) He was absolutely marvellous and is in the same churchyard as the Du Mauriers' not Daphne of course - she her ashes were scattered - oh you've got me on a thought train now lol xxxx

I had the great pleasure of meeting Bernard when he starred in a Pantomime at the Leicester De Montfort Hall in the mid 1980's, he was sat on a stool at the bar during the interval and we had a short chat, what lovely man he was.

I remember meeting Mr. Breslaw very briefly in Hudson's Bookshop in Birmingham. We only exchanged a few words, but he was very friendly. He is probably the biggest man I had ever met, a true giant.

@BeautifulBadandBizarre He was just there looking for a particular book, the title of which I cannot recall. As it happened, I had looked at that particular book only a few moments before and had considered buying it. After I replaced the book, Mr. Breslaw came in with a shop assistant asking about this book. The assistant went to the shelf holding the book and told Mr. Breslaw that he was lucky as that was the last copy in stock. When I spoke to him, I did not mention that I very nearly deprived him of the book he was specifically seeking. No doubt that book found its way into one of those many crates of volumes that you referred to as it seems that he never threw a book away .
Oh I can't cope with that lol I so want to know what the books was - I'm one of these people that if I see someone reading a book on the train etc - I am desperate to see what they're reading lol It's amazing how life can sometimes unfold in such unexpected ways though. It's almost as if fate intervened to ensure that Bernard Bresslaw got the book he was searching for, despite the close call. Thank you so much for sharing this - I've loved hearing about it! xxxx
@BeautifulBadandBizarre I am sorry that I can't recall the title of the book or its subject other than it was a slim volume and nonfiction, but, in my defence, I am seventy-one years old and it was many years ago. I am glad that you found my little anecdote interesting. This is the first time that I have related it as it was just a few minutes in my life, which I would no doubt have forgotten if it had not involved a famous person. Another touching tribute. Bernard was also the first actor to portray an Ice Warrior on Doctor Who. The reptilian Martians aren't quite as famous as the daleks but they are memorable characters that appeared in several stories.
Whilst mainly known for his unique comic characters in the Carry On films he was a very versatile actor. In particular, his large stature made him a popular choice for fantasy roles in his later career.
I knew he had passed away at a relatively young age but I hadn't appreciated that he was actually one of the youngest Carry On regulars till I watched this. Quite surprised he was still only a kid at the end of the war. Again that might be because of his height. I am a big guy myself and when I was young, people often thought I was older than I was.
Due to the nature of randomness and human lifespans, relatively short, often memorable periods can be filled with tragedy. I clearly remember the previous year when both Frankie Howerd and Benny Hill died within a day of each other.

That's fascinating about Bernard's being the first Ice Warrior I didn't realise that! While the Daleks may steal much of the spotlight, the Ice Warriors definitely hold their own in terms of memorable appearances and intriguing storylines.
I do agree, his height gave the impression he was older than he was - I used to think he was older than Diana Dors - so it was a surprise to me when I realised he was 3 years younger than she was.
You have mentioned another two of my favourite entertainers! I adore them both, Benny Hill always reminded me of my cousin who sadly is no longer with us, so I adored him partly for that - and I have always been a major fan of Frankie Howerd! xxxx

I had the good fortune to work on a TV series way back in 1990 with Bernard Bresslaw.
He was a VERY big guy, much more than I could’ve imagined!
We were filming a sequence at a theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue where Bernard was dressed as a fairy and was hoisted into the air on thin cables.
He was a good 6ft plus in the air when all of a sudden there was an audible ‘ping’ as one of the two cables snapped.
Luckily the second cable held up and we had the sight of this giant of a man hanging sideways with a fair drop beneath him.
He remained completely calm and didn’t panic (though I have never seen so many production people simultaneously crap themselves!).
He was a very quiet chap as I remembered him.
As time goes on, one by one all those we grew up with exit the stage of life and get forgotten; thanks for remembering him!

I can't think of many actors and entertainers today that have the same dedication as our actors and entertainers of yesteryear - they worked so incredibly hard too, Bernard was non stop working, on TV, stage, screen, radio - appearances etc - they lived under rather a lot of stress that it's no wonder many of them experienced illnesses that were often fatal at such a young age xx

Fortunately - it's so silly that we're censored with what we can watch on TV - I'm not a huge fan of certain genres - so I just don't watch them - that's that! Hello stranger. I hope you are well. Another lovely tribute. Quick story. Many years ago in my home city of Manchester, I was in a shop (now long gone) called "The Magazine And Poster Centre" at the Manchester Corn Exchange building. It mostly catered for fans of sci-fi and classic TV and film buffs like myself. Whilst at the counter, I looked to my right and I did one of those "double-takes"...it was Mr. Bresslaw stood next to me in conversation with one of the guys behind the till. Without wishing to interrupt, I didn't say anything or asked (or should that be "Arsked" ) for an autograph. I believe, if memory serves me right, that Mr. Bresslaw was appearing in a play (possibly Shakespeare) at the nearby Royal Exchange theatre at the time. Anyway, nice to see you back Shar. X
