There is no shortage of mechanics , there is a shortage of good shops to work for.
It’s difficult keeping mechanics. I trained them on a job give them instructions even with instructions can’t get it right. I feel this guy. An experience tech is already your next door competitor.
There is a huge shortage of mechanics and smart shops pay their techs well to prevent turnover. The shops that pay poorly are always contending with turnover which effects their bottom line.
There a huge shortage in mechanics. Here the problem summed up in three words. PAY PAY PAY! Problem is most shops don’t want to pay: These vehicles now days are complicated computer based machines and shop owners expect to hire a mechanic that has a hundred grand in tools. LOL good luck on that one!
So from what I got is he wants to hire people that have 10 years experience and wants to pay helper wage lol
I can go on all day about this but bottom line if you want quality technicians you must be willing to pay for them. Any tech that is really good knows they can make 100k at a dealership so you need to give them a reason to work for you..
I don’t think that’s very true
This is soooo beneficial for me as an aspiring mechanic, just the first couple sentences were incredibly valuable to hear.
You have to train and mentor. Employers expect too much from new guys and don’t want to pay enough for guys who are already experienced. On the job experience only comes from one place, employers. Employers are decimating their own labor pools by not training and mentoring the next generation of labor.
Really so what happens when an owner takes the time to train a guy and then he jumps ship for the shiny new shop across the street?
Employers are not required to train their employees, that’s just part of the business.
No shops close of mismanagement and poor customer service. If someone wants to be a mechanic why depend on a shop owner to train you? Go figure it out. Want to be Heart surgeons don’t walk into operating rooms and ask other doctors to train them to work on hearts??? I’m just playing devils advocate, yes you need to learn and some shop owners will teach you but you should have some mechanical experience under your belt. Be that fixing your bike as a kid or changing your own oil.
@@bundysgarage surgeons absolutely learn on the job. They learn theory in school, but hands on is trained while they assist. The experienced surgeons train them.
I loved your take on hiring. I’ve gone through all the same things. Personally UTI/MMI has never worked out for me either but I’ve kept trying them as motorcycle mechanics are hard to find. I 100% agree with your assessment of being a nice person. I work closely with my techs and I’m hands on so usually I’m wrenching right along side them on the next lift and I have had to let several people go because I couldn’t stand their attitude, even though they were a good tech. They bring that bad vibe/aura to the shop and I can’t do it. I’m actually looking now so I’m gonna try hiring based off your hiring model.
My father works for a Chevy dealer and he flat out said I'd get a job a dealership and in returned be apprenticed into the industry.
I make 15 bucks an hour at a dim, gloomy dark shop in Alaska.
But my skills are more like $28/hour. So yeah it sucks ass when you get paid on Friday and pick up your $583 weekly paycheck. Might as well be mopping floors instead of replacing the oil pump in this 2014 Duramax.
Come to Oregon. New guys make 25Hr. Senior guys make 40 hr as Diesel mechanics.
@@mikethemechanic7395 Wow. Those are pretty good wages. Buuuuut, doesn't Oregon have a State Income tax? I won't live in a State where I have to pay both State and Federal taxes. Its too much.. too much $ thrown away.
The shop i used to work at closed. Everyone got Covid, the owner almost died, and gave it up. Now im fixing cars and trucks on my own and I dont have to be broke all the time!
Bro ppl here in target cashier making $15 hour.
Great video! im in the position of walking into a shop and saying give me a job, I have no book experience but I changed out my own clutch, fuel injectors, and even done a head gasket with my service cart full of quality hand and specialty tools ready to go already. I'm ready for something new that I can do the rest of my life with enjoyment, I bought my tools with the idea that id go into the auto or truck industry soon in life. I also been thinking about going to school district's and applying at the bus barns, just been doing researching and getting myself ready mentally for the switch.
What your experiences with hiring people with ASE's?
If you don't have respect I can't teach that to you🔥🔥🔥 I absolutley agree people need to learn that internally, on their own or it wont stick.
Boss how to apply sir, I am auto mechanic and light mechanic, underchassis component ..im 10years experience from saudi arabia
He wants perfection, if he is that good , he would have his own shop
It’s true
maybe they're finding out what kind of guy you are as a boss...
As technician, employers do not care much about a degree ,but for auto makers like Ford and others care so much about the degree . I wonder why is that way
Dam son look at that 𝙈𝙊𝙐𝙎𝙏𝘼𝘾𝙃𝙀
Sometimes ur best mechanics arnt nice ppl cause they don’t like to be bothered and like to work alone. Some just are assholes at work and nice outside of work. I’d say it’s a lot to do with what’s going on in their life and if they enjoy being at work doing the job or just doing it for the money til they find the next employer
Sir I'm the guy you need, ,,, automotive technician in dubai police transport and rescue department
for 18 yrs in well experience!!!!!
Hello I'm from India can you hire me
There's no surprises here. Mechanics have been disrespected and paid low wages for decades. Now the shops are just paying their dues.
pay peanuts you get unreliablr, unproductive staff who dont give a toss if they are there from one day to the next, pay good $$ you get good workers.
You're better off dealing with an actual UTI (urinary tract infection) than going there to try and learn how to be a mechanic.
You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. I graduated UTI December 1985 top 3% of my class and have been making a great living ever since! I work when there's a recession at work when people are losing their homes and I still have everything!
No ,
IF YOU can't respect your employees , his knowledge and tools ,
I CAN'T respect you .
Blah blah blah always excuses from these companies. There are good workers out there.
Really? Both sides have excuses.
