  • This is a step by step video on how to catch crawfish/crayfish (and what to do once you get them home)! Tons of people love crawfish for bait or for eating, but you have to catch them first! I hope this was a helpful guide on how to trap them! Let me know in the comments below!
The Gee's G-40 Minnow traps can be bought on Amazon or at Walmart and they cost about $15 each. For the average person they should work great. If you want to find out if crawfish can escape traps check out this video I made:

    • @nateitscake88
      @nateitscake88 Před 4 lety +18

@@93tjfresh It pre-maturely kills the crawfish and it serves no purpose. You do not need salt to purge/clean them. All you need is a big kiddie pool or a big cooler. I prefer the kiddie pool because the crawfish will not stack up on each other as much, the weight of the crawfish stacking up on each other kills the ones on bottom plus it displaces oxygen. Just get yourself a bi kiddie pool and fill it up with some tap water. Let soak for and hour and drain the water... Do this 2-3X and they will be clean!

    Excellent video!
I ordered a trap on Amazon. When I was a boy, I would get barefoot, walk through the creek in my neighborhood and hurt grab crayfish with my bare hands. I could have the bottom of a bucket covered in an hour, but a trap is going to save me a lot of walking. I am going to get a pet cat and I love sardines. So, I think the first baits I will try in my Crawdad trap are semi- moist cat food (that comes in a pouch) and sardines in oil.
I want the crayfish for a "natural" fish tank that I am creating that will not have the typical "tropical fish," but fish representative of the lakes around me, here in Northern Illinois. In college, I caught a small bluegill on a rod and reel and kept it in a 10 gal. tank in my apt. for years.
This tank will have a pea gravel bottom, rocks from the beaches of Lake Michigan, live freshwater plants, crayfish, plecostomus, Google eyed goldfish and minnows.
I am interested in eating some of the larger Crawdads that I catch. I'm assuming that you only eat the tail. Could you post your favorite recipe. We have a New Orleans style restaurant here in Chicago land called "Crawdaddy Bayou." I had the crowded tails in white sauce with cheese over linguine and it was fantastic. That with some garlic bread and a panettone Ribbon beer = heaven! 😉

I never really ate them because my entire family in Arkansas couldn't get over their bug like appearance. Despite that, I just kept hearing people say they tasted so good!
So after trying some "Long John Silvers" and finding out that I absolutely LOVE shrimp, and also finding out that I love sushi, I figured I may like crawfish too.
I must admit that I was originally put off by their look just like the rest of my family, but after I tore into my first few (very messy with no sense of technique) WOW the feast I was missing all that time. I regularly purchase these things now from my local store and even include them in my weight gain diet. They are absolutely superb!

If you have replaced any snaps with imported snaps please let me know and I will replace them for you. The imported snaps are not the same wire thickness and the hook bends are inconsistent causing the snap to be faulty.

Thanks for this awesome video! I have a few questions that maybe a pro like you can answer. I just purchased three traps and I placed them overnight a couple times with chicken tided in his bait. It's super oily so I know which should be a good bait. I live in Upstate NY and catching hasn't been good so far. I noticed you talked about temp changing their behavior a little. What air temp is a good one to look out for for setting trap? It's been a bit chilly this year and it's only May. Is there a month that they're better to catch in?
Also, I have tanks to keep them in before Ive gathered enough for a boil, how long do they last in a well aerated tank? Is there a point that I should feed them while waiting for a large enough batch, like a week?

    • @livefreefishmore1008

Is there a law that prevents making the hole in the trap larger (in order to catch larger crayfish)? I personally have no patience in eating this kind of tiny crayfish. On a bad year, I dump back everything under 10cm (4 inches), and on a good year everything under 11cm.

In my lake there are mussel and crawfish and with the mussel open, upside down you can pinch them and sometimes you'll find a crawfish.

Sadly where I live you cannot transport live crayfish.

I caught my crayfish in tide pools, near the shore and under rocks. I usually find newborns there since they always go to the shore
