Another fantastic documentary. Thank you for not concentrating solely on the obvious success story of Witcher 3, but also bringing to the attention of international viewers the long road towards that goal. Can't wait for the rest of the series! Greetings from Poland!

It makes so much sense now why CD Project red doesn't care about piracy. They have been dealing with it since the very beginning so it has become standard.
Yep, Marcin made money by selling pirated games before he founded CDPR but now wants you pay pigs to give him money now since it is more profitable to be "legit"
To be fair, he did said that there were no copyright law in Poland back then as so his young mind at the time didn't really comprehend nor care for the repercussions of IP theft, obviously, now that has changed, especially since The Witcher games grown exponentially.
There being no copyright law is irrelevant, the only argument he gave against piracy is to "support the developer" which has nothing to do with piracy being illegal.
CDPR sent legal threats to Germans who pirated Witcher 2 for them to pay 1000 euros or be taken to court, the only reason he could give to not pirate it was to "support the developer". He couldn't say buy the physical copy of Witcher 2 so you can actually get something in return for your money at the time since the vanilla version had securom.
Of course his view has changed since that is how he makes money now. Quit drinking the kool aid and quit trying to defend that scum bag. use goodolddownload instead of giving money to GOG.
Well, "support the developer" is the only reason that *should* be needed, unless you're a fan of not rewarding people for their work that you like.
And now they do a extreme quality product that nobody will decline buying, The Witcher 3 made the gods of gaming industry.
Here is a funny story. I was once at Games Convention (the predecessor of GamesCom) in Leipzig, back when CD Projekt was there showing off The Witcher 1. I remember they had a really tiny booth and I thought the game looked awesome. But I was a console gamer at that time, so I asked one of the devs, and it might even have been the guy in the video, if this would ever come to console. I don't remember exactly what he said, either no, or we'll see. But who would have thought back then how this all turned out in the end. I definitely saw the potential, even with the first game.

I wish I could've been one of those people who got into the Witcher from the first game. It would've been really cool to see the series evolve. As it is I am now a Witcher junkie, reading the books several times over, started with W2, then got W3 and am now finally getting around to W1. About 10 or 12 hours in and yeah man, I can see the potential and why it's as beloved as it is.
Witcher 1 is still my favorite in the series! There's something about the atmosphere that they nailed in that first one.

As much as this was about the history of CD Project and the making of the Witcher, I found the history of the Polish people's struggle throughout the Cold War era even more fascinating. It's amazing to see how the making of a video game can bring a new perspective to a country's history you can only read or hear about from traditional sources. Bravo!

Witcher (books) was very popular not only in Poland but in Czechoslovakia too.
Hell it was recommended to me in 1991 by a 70 years old librarian in public library.
It was almost always rented and there was like half-year of waiting until you can
rent it. And when you wanted actually to buy the book, it was no chance. Day one and
every copy in every corner of republic was sold.

They were popular long before the games came into the existence in Russia as well. Just as an example: There were numerous Witcher-based LARPs held in Russia involving thousands of peoples in the early 2000s.

There's such a huge pan-slavic trend in Eastern Europe, and barely anyone banks on it. The Witcher, some folk musicians... thats about it. The Witcher Netflix series wouldve been WAAAAAAY bigger (and at first it was huge anyway) if it focused on the slavic themes of culture and pagan religion but... instead they made a boring western fantasy crap.

true story. I cracked Witcher3, played for nearly 100 hours and deleted it.. just to buy steam version and play through again. I would need to have no respect to myself to keep pirating them. As I know A LOT of people did the same as me. It's a special game and special producers.
Does EA even put DRM on their games? (other then Origin) I think you're just randomly blaming EA because they're an easy target.
@@owenwalters5818 EA require DRM for all games either developed or published by them. Same with Bethesda. If a publisher/developer is part of a corporate parent company or traded publicly on the US stock market then they are technically required to do it. Shareholders could sue them for fraudulent negligence because the company has a legal requirement to provide protection from copyright infringement. DRM is basically their only way of showing that they meet that requirement legally. CD Project Red don't have DRM because they are a private company which only trades a minority shareholding on the Polish stock market and there is technically no law in Poland or the EU requiring a copyright enforcement on software producer or distributers. Most do it because it makes the most sense to protect your product but they are not legally required to.

watching this gave me a better perspective as to why CDPR does not bother with stuff like DRMs such as Denuvo and the likes.. gog is in their roots, and for some reason that makes me really happy :) I mean c'mon, smuggling a PS2 dev kit? That's badass ahahaha. Nevertheless, SUPPORT DEVELOPERS...
GOG is just there internet service, even after witcher there prime business was game redistribution and to this day they still doing that, it's the reason why GOG exist. The name it self Good Old Games come from something that was popular at the time and it was selling old games that been not normally distributed anymore under "classics" brand (kind of like Playstation's platinum series) and this is not only what CD Project did but lot of polish redistributors. About DRM, they distribute game with same protection system as it was sold in western market, you need to remeber back then piracy (and im talking here about hard piracy, resaleing copies) was super strong in here so no body was thinking to take out DRM ;p

As a person from Czechia (south neighbor of Poland) this hit really close to home. We had a lot of the same struggles and the beginings of gaming were almost identical. CD Project was a huge influence even in our little country and The Witcher was a big deal here as well even before the games. Great job, Noclip!

This was amazing. Not only did it showcase the founding of CD Projekt Red like I expected it to, it even brought to light the historical context of Poland and the gaming industry there at that time, which is fascinating.
Swapping games with a person from Greece by putting up an ad on a gaming magazine, through the mail that took 2 weeks to arrive? Woah. Downloading games off of the radio? Holy crap.
Plus, the documentary itself was very well-shot and thought out.

It's a small detail, but I really appreciate you made an effort to learn the proper Polish pronunciation of CD Projekt. Veeery few of English speaking journalist would do that if any at all.
I literally have tears in my eyes. I had NO idea it was them who translated Ace Ventura and the Pink Panther back in the 90s. I was singing a song from the Hokus Pokus Pink Panther only a few days ago along with my brother (who already has his own son) and it makes us laugh EVERY time. It was so well translated. I replayed all these games countless times just for the great dialogue. And the actors! The BEST of the best Polish actors available. I kid you not. And let me tell you - some of it was pure imagination, not translation. Polish "inside jokes", references to Polish celebrities etc. To think that we could have never played those games would just make my childhood different somehow... Damn. I thought I couldn't be more thankful for the Witcher 3 and there - they also gave me the favourite games of my childhood. (I was a little girl back then, did not understand a single word in English)
Amazing origin story and I loved the use of archival footage. I showed this video to my mom, who grew up in Soviet Russia and related to Marcin's experiences. She would also take me to the electronic markets in Moscow in the 90s, so we have experience buying bootleg software. She's never played games, but loved watching this.

@@lordrotarec There was no famine in Poland, but malnutrition was common. Meat was so expensive that the communist power as an alternative to meat created fermi with agaricus. To this day, Poland is the second largest agaricus producer in the world.
Coming from Slovakia, I'm really happy that gaming stories from post-soviet countries are surfacing in such a cool venue, with this level of production.
God, I remember like it was yesterday - buying that big Baldur's Gate 2 box with Czech localization in Tesco. It can't be understated how influential well-localized games were in this region for an entire generation.

I like to think that Witcher 3 "is a uniquely Slavic" game too, but the Skellige Isles... You know what I'm thinking. As someone from the actual town of Larvik, it was a pure joy to visit its namesake in one of my favorite games of all time. :D

Not only CD Projekt RED have created a master piece in the RPG genre but they've also helped delivering to the world one of Polish's lovable franchise.
Warsaw looks amazing, I know this is a documentary about a video game but you somehow made me curious about the city :)

To be honest, it's considered one of the ugliest cities in Poland. It was commercialized too much. Krakow, Gdansk, Zakopane, Białystok and many smaller cities are way prettier and interesting.

You should google pictures during WWII. Warsaw Uprising was one of the first underground movements against the Nazi regime and they were so success that Hilter ordered the entire city to be burnt to the ground and bombed.

As a Hungarian I can relate to the beginning of the video. I'm a bit younger than most of the developers, still born in the socialist era. When the first McDonald's opened in Budapest people were queuing for hours to get a burger. The differences are still very visible. Sadly the socialst mark hasn't disappeared.
Is socialism generally reviled in Eastern Europe? I would like to know since there are a lot of people in the west (particularly here in Britain) that still think it can work and want to try it. I for one would be very grateful if more people from Eastern Europe could educate the west on socialism and it's history.

Chaz: it is, though some, mostly older people, are nostalgic about it because they feel like they got duped by capitalism. Also, for example, we got self-deprecation bashed into us and there is a severe lack of go-getter attitude in people. Many just give up on improving their lives if things aren't going their way.

CD Projekt was translating games into Czech language too - for Czech and Slovak markets. I still have a small collection of their games. They tried to battle the piracy with fair prices and bonuses like soundtracks, posters and artbooks in regular versions of the game. Collector's editions were rare ten years ago around here.
Witcher was one of the first games I bought with my own money. It introduced me to the novels and the fantasy genre as a whole (Harry Potter doesn't count). Later I found out how big the following is. Witcher is something like LOTR in the west. It was the first fantasy book teenagers read around here, it was our intro to adult fantasy books. After reading the first few short stories I was hooked.
Of course the game helped too and it'll be forever one of my favourite games ever made and I dare say it was the game that made me real gamer. Until then I was a casual gamer playing racing games and some shooters like CS1.6. So thank you CDP for this great gem and the masterpiece that it eventually spawned - Witcher 3. And thank you for treating your customers as human beings and fans. Not just money cows that are expected to give you money like other publishers and developers out there do.
However, there's one thing that's been bothering me lately. I'm really afraid these accusations might be true and the managers in CDPR are full of themselves. The silence around Cyberpunk and a card game release (though I do love Gwint - yeah, that's not a typo, that's the original name!) only confirms that it might be true. Watch this:

Fantastic episode! Marcin is such a genuine personality. I love this company! If they manage to keep this spirit, I'll support them whatever they do. Through the good and the bad.
One of the main sources of income for CD Projekt in the late 90s were Blizzard games. I've been writing game reviews for one of Polish games magazines at that time and was tasked by my Editor in Chief with doing an early review of the first Starcraft. It was in beta test stage and afaik the deal was that the copy that CD Projekt got could not leave their company's HQ, so I had to go there and spend several hours on watching some multiplayer battles played by Marcin and Michał Kiciński. I remember that they both left a very good impression on me, being regular chilled out guys, prone to goofing around and pretty good at actual gaming too, altough they cheated. Kind of. You see, they were proud to come out with this idea that one of them would play using the mouse, while the other kept their opponents busy with keyboard, by constantly trying to engage their opponents in discussions during the battle (I mean real discussion, not "ur mom" kind of thing that you usually get nowdays).
A few hours after I left their office they received a huge patch that changed several major features of the game, thus making my whole review outdated even before the magazine's issue left the printing house, but that's another story :)

You have talked alot about localization. The Witcher 3 in Brazilian Portuguese have one of the best localization to date! Only competing with The Last of Us from Sony. These guys have a lot of respect for our country, and for that I'm grateful.
I just stumbled onto this and...Holy smoke! This is SUPERB! So very informative. For instance, I had no idea that broadcasting games via the radio was even a concept! And this documentary is done on a fantastic professional level; truly first-rate; right up there with the best documentaries I've ever seen. Not only covering the subject at hand, but also the background and history and personal stories. I am giddy with anticipation, looking forward to seeing the rest of the videos you've already done, and hoping you continue to do many more for many years to come. I think this is the most excited I've ever been to see something on CZcams, or anywhere actually. Stunning work. The photography, audio, direction, lighting, editing, and writing; all top-level. I had no idea Ace Ventura was their first game. I have it and played it back then a bunch as a kid. "Alrighty" is "W porząsiu", I still remember that, but even if I didn't it's in the manual in the jewel case :P Now I wish I didn't throw out the big box.
Lowed the introduction segment about how Poland was back then. In an alternative universe where you couldn't copy games the history of gaming in Poland would be way different. That was the only way to get most things.
Also, I don't want to cannibalize or diminish your documentary, but recently a Polish documentary about the Witcher came out. It's in Polish, but has English subtitles and I can recommend it to anyone that's interested. The video is titled "Biały Wilk: Historia komputerowego Wiedźmina | Film dokumentalny".

It is a beautiful country full of culture, that has dealt with a lot of tragedy during the 20th century. I have family from Poland, my fiance’ was born in Poland, and we are taking the family to visit next summer. I see a lot of pride from Poles due to the popularity of CDPR in the West, and it is very well deserved.
Great job on this documentary.

That's true, one of the station was "Rozgłośnia Harcerska" (loosely translatet into "Scouts Radio Station")

Man, incredibly humble beginnings. But im so glad CD Projekt Red is a game developer. Witcher 3 is my favorite game of all time. And Cyberpunk 2077 is going to revolutionize not just RPGs, but videogames in general. These crazy Polish are doing incredible things

These are always so well done. I like that it actually starts at the beginning of CD Projekt, and doesn't just jump to the Witcher. Feels a lot like the FF14 documentary IMO.

I really wanted to thank you and the CD PR team on this documentary. It is really good journalism. Good light Atmosphere very different from the **** the various gaming news channels are feeding us nowadays. I liked the first part about the history of Poland's Gaming scene. Also regarding the founder, I am really impressed by his true love to the company (very rare nowadays)

Slavic games and stories always have that depressive beautiful feeling to them, whether its stalker , witcher, or the books in general. Its refreshing from the good vs evil\happy end or plain and cliche of the us mainstream model we can find around the world (exept when there is a "everything go bad" trend, for the sake of things being bad even when it doesn't really make any sense if you have a closer look). I like both, but id like more of this slavic stuff.
