Gilmore's patience, timing, minimalism, execution and sheer discipline - All adds together to licks and riffs that just oozes of perfection. The only guy who can stand neck to neck with David is yet another British guitarist by the name of Mark Knopfler.

So the King will have to promote him! But it hardly matters - his greatness owes nothing to English noble titles. His musicianship outshines of all that.

It's almost like technicality does mean musicality. There's a reason why this solo is iconic. It's emotive, it's powerful - Sure, shred your 16th note string-skipping phrygian dominant runs at 190bpm all you want, but that's an exercise more akin to an etude than creating a melody. There's a reason why pentatonic scales are found in most cultures around the world - they sound good and people relate to them. Also, Gilmour has shown he can do more than that, so who cares?
Any solo by Marty Friedman, Guthire Govan, Al Di Meola, Rick Graham, Alan Holdsworth, Zakk Wylde, Tom Quayle (…), Any jazz guitarist, any great guitar player. Cmon, if you dont see a difference your knowledge about playing guitar equals zero

Dave pretty much maxed out what a person can do with the basic minor pentatonic blues position.
The beauty of it is that you are not even thinking about that or what scale he is playing when you hear him, it stops to matter.
It’s one of these solos where he uses speed. In fact, the only other one I can think of is the one to the Thin Ice.

The toughest part for most is the tempo.
