Josh Guthrie Disagree. A lot of songs in the film exist outside of the plot in order to flesh out how horrific the school is. Tbh Teacher’s Pet is one of the few songs that replicate the Crybaby album the best. It perfectly shows how an innocent teacher crush can evolve into a manipulative relationship, which is a prevalent issue in modern day society.
To me it seems a lot of the songs are unrelated to any ‘story line’, but instead focuses on how fucked things are in the world. Studentxteacher relationships, bulimia, bullying, transgender issues, freedom of speech etc. To me, there really isn’t that much of a story line in the first place, just Mel pointing out fucked up shit
None of these are about Melanie. She said she can only relate to Show & Tell and Detention. Crybaby and K-12 are both about a character called Crybaby and Melanie continues the story from the music videos into the movie. It will all make sense if you see the movie. I hadn’t discovered her music before this album and it surprises me that so many people take her lyrics so literally? What happened to making art with music and having messages embedded in your songs that aren’t spelled out for listeners and that people have to think about...that’s what makes music so interesting sometimes. It’s not just about how catchy a song is it’s about the political/societal statements music can make and I think that’s incredible. She caught my interest with this album and I like how much thought she puts into this “character” in her songs and how she has this whole story. Very creative and interesting. The lyrical content behind songs like “Teacher’s Pet” and “High School Sweethearts” isn’t meant to be taken at face value. You’re supposed to look into it and realize she’s commenting on real issues and how adults can take advantage of a young girl’s infatuation with an older man, how high school youths become obsessed with one another to an unhealthy degree and how it’s all-consuming, etc. Not saying that the reviewer herself in this video did this, but it’s tough to watch people try to censor art and expression because it’s “strange” or “different.” It’s not even about her it’s about her fictional character. We should be celebrating innovative artists, not scaring them away so that we’re only left with bland and generic pop. It’s weird that people think Melanie is “promoting” child abuse, etc with her creating a story through her songs and it’s ignorant. I have no hope for critical thinking with our generation these days. They take things so literally and don’t have anything thought-provoking to say. I think you should do a reaction to the film while you are watching the film. That will be fun to see because many of us listened to the songs the first time by just watching the K-12 film which is an experience to watch the story, scenes and hear the music reflect that. Melanie martinez is such an inspiration to me. And should be for other artists. She has albums and songs they may sound “childish” or may make people not think anything of it. But her songs may have child themes but they have SUCH a deeper meaning. So in order to understand her music you have to think and relate. It really makes you realize the issues in society. And doesn’t necessarily sugarcoat it but kind of bring us back to where it starts (kindergarten)

i interpret it as for that “i’m sorry i’m talking” incident. people tried to cancel her over that incident when all she asked was for people to be quiet while she’s talking. there’s a line where she says “stop calling on my phone saying that i’ve been out of line when all i asked was to go to the bathroom.”
Meagan Skuta it could very possibly be about that. i guess there’s different ways of looking at it to each person because it’s not specific on what the song is about. it’s interesting though because then people can look at it however that want and everyone kinda has a different opinion of it. i thought it might be about a relationship she was in where she felt trapped and couldn’t get out. maybe she was constantly being somewhat punished in this relationship. but there’s so many ways to look at it.
k-12 concept to me is how everyone is going through changes in that period of elementary to highschool she goes over main themes like neglection relates to how the bus driver does nothing changes how girls constantly have to keep a good image while boys will just be boys hence the song strawberry shortcake anyway that's just my thoughts on it

Melanie martinez is such an inspiration to me. And should be for other artists. She has albums and songs they may sound “childish” or may make people not think anything of it. But her songs may have child themes but they have SUCH a deeper meaning. So in order to understand her music you have to think and relate. It really makes you realize the issues in society. And doesn’t necessarily sugarcoat it but kind of bring us back to where it starts (kindergarten)
