  • This video will answer the question of when not to use a gait belt, also called a transfer belt, and provide alternatives to a traditional gait belt. If you are looking for the basics of how to use a gait belt, you check the other video I did: • How to Use a Gait Belt...

Thank you for all your videos. I find them all incredibly educational. I am an OT in the UK and I've never seen a gait belt used here so it's interesting to hear you talk about its benefits and risks.

That's really interesting! Gait belts are mandatory items in nearly all our hospital and geriatric care settings here in the US!

Yes! I am in OT living in the UK now for eight years but I was trained in California! So it’s strange to not see any gait belts around here at all. What do you think about them now? Have you ever felt they could be useful in certain situations here in the UK question

3-CONTRAINDICATIONS to using abdominally applied gait belt:
1-Those with abdominal pain, surgeries, tubes, stitches, hernia, wounds, etc.
2-Those who couldn’t (cognitively, behaviorally, agitative etc.) tolerate a gait belt.
3-Don’t lift with them. Support, balance, transfer only.

Very informative, thank you. A physiotherapist at the hospital where my husband is at the moment, used a transfer/walking/gait belt for the first times he was helped to stand up, and then walk with the walker. This belt looked like in silicone, I thought it was softer and so better than a hard material at the waist of an elderly frail person.. Have you ever seen one, and if yes, any thoughts about this?

Thank you for this video. I'm a bit confused about the advice not to use it for lifting. I need a device to transfer someone from bed to wheelchair; wheelchair to daychair. I've seen another video where a physical therapist uses the gait belt just to do this task - probably not more than 1-2 seconds of lifting. Is this the "stabilising use" that you are referring to as being ok?

I have a similar question! When I was getting my OT masters in 2009 the gait belt was definitely used in part for lifting! Maybe too many people have gotten injured this way so now we should rely on equipment like hoists and stand/transfer aids to help us do this?

Can you use when someone that broke back

Sometimes, I have definitely used gait belts for back injury or surgery recovery support. It's super important to understand placement and often a brace needs to be in place to prevent unintentional pressure on the injury area.

@@EquipMeOT I was just thinking that! I was thinking too bad they don’t have gait belts that are kind of like slings for some of the Stand aids!
