It was an interesting chat. I’m a bit embarrassed that university students can’t seem to make an argument without blowing theirs tops, but it was interesting. In the U.S. the Welfare laws are set up so that if a woman is a single mother she receives X amount of monthly support, plus X amount more for each child. Everybody needs help sometimes so this is as it should be. However, the law was written so that if the father or another adult male relative lives at the same location the mother loses those benefits. THAT was an idiotic addition to the law and needs to be changed. Its effect has been that generations of kids have been growing up without fathers involved in their lives. Young men can’t learn how to be men and take care of all the responsibilities a man should if there’s no male role model around. And women can’t teach it anymore than I could teach a young girl to be feminine, or all the subtle communication skills women have that men don’t. It takes both. Thomas Sowell pointed out a few years ago that at that time the fastest ethnic group rising up the social ladder in the U.S. were Nigerian immigrants. And that was interesting because as blacks they face the same racism and hurdles as American-born blacks, but culturally they were raised with completely different values and expectations. Just like the Asian and Indian communities, the Nigerians were family oriented, valued education and hard work, tended to avoid trouble with the law, and were focused on building their own businesses.
Sorry if I’m rambling. Just got off work and I’m a little tired.
