CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Fromm (Tom Wilkinson) reprimands Stauffenberg (Tom Cruise) for going over his head, then forces him to salute Hitler.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
At the absolute height of World War II, German generals hatch a daring plan to assassinate Adolf Hitler and effectively render the German war machine impotent. Directed by Bryan Singer, Valkyrie stars Tom Cruise as Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, the real-life mastermind behind the elaborate plot known as Project Valkyrie: a plan to assassinate Hitler and overthrow his government from the inside. Stauffenberg has been a loyal soldier and an asset to the Reich for his entire military career, but after losing an eye, a hand, and three fingers in an Allied bombing, he reaches a breaking point. The destructive madness that his country is unleashing on the world has become too terrible for the colonel to stand silent. He joins the resistance movement -- a treasonous act, punishable by death -- and risks his life and the life of his family for the chance to change history. Comprised of high-ranking officials working in secret, the German Resistance has access to the inner workings of the government and military, putting them in the perfect position to dispatch the dictator and then use his own official contingency plan to seize power -

Eh. What bugs me about the history of this is these guys were regarded as heroes. They were opportunists. They didn't try to overthrow Hitler until the writing was on the wall for the 3rd reich and it was evident defeat was only a matter of time. Where were their high minded ideals when everything was going Germany's way in 39-41?
They wanted to overthrow Hitler to bring the allies to the peace table to sign an armistice, which they felt the allies would agree to as opposed to unconditional surrender with Hitler gone, where all of the conspirators would of course occupy the highest positions in the new German government. While yes, they likely wanted to spare Germany the destruction it would face, they also likely knew they would end up at the end of a noose by the Allies at the end of the war anyway.
@@tsdobbi Well said, and I agree with all you stated.
However, I still enjoy the movie, and still view the men as heroes, or at the least, braver than most. Yes, they only moved when it appeared Hitler was on the end of his ropes. But, they still did it knowing good and well that they would likely lose their lives.

Even though he failed in his plot, I like to think Stauffenberg had a hand in the Reich's downfall

At the time I thought the movie was bad, because Tom Cruise seemed miscast in the role and because of the well known English actors with their tweed accents playing Nazis.

Tom Cruise got his hand cut for this movie what an actor ❤️

Tom Wilkinson is such a great actor. Love him.
This is a clever scene. By this act Colonel Staufenberg has shown the general the price of serving Hitler. A lost limb , then a lost friend , lost family and the largest loss itself , defeat at the hands of the Allies. It symbolises how much Germany had lost by following Hitler. Let's hope that no people end up serving a mad man like Hitler ever again.
IMO handwaving Hitler as a "madman" means we completely ignore why and how he came to power and why he made the decisions he took. It's counter-productive.
This, This comment has aged like milk

First off the Wehrmacht (army) always used the normal military salute toward each other and only used the Hitler Salute toward Hitler himself or high ranking party members. It wasn’t until after the events depicted in this film did the army start using the Hitler salute toward each other. Also this scene shows Fromm who is the ranking General saluting first.
