Jimmy Barnes “Barnsy” as he is colloquially known, has a MASSIVE back-catalogue stretching back to the early ‘70’s when Cold Chisel stormed into the public consciousness.
Like all great artists “Chisel” as they are known, grew in popularity and influence after they disbanded and are generally regarded as one of the greatest and most seminal “Pub Rock” bands in Australian music history.
Each and every member of Chisel is/was a master musician and songwriter in their own right and they combined to reflect the Australian experience of the 1970’s and ‘80’s with masterful lyrics coupled to exceptional musicianship and aggressive and energetic performances.
Cold Chisel released 5 studio albums in their original 10 years together and have subsequently released a massively popular live album and some 3 or 4 subsequent albums in recent years, all of which have charted well.
Jimmy himself released his #1 debut solo album “Bodyswerve” in 1984, less than a year after Chisel broke up and has released some 21 solo and collaboration, studio albums, up to this point in time (2023) most of which have been highly commercially successful chart-toppers.
Wether you start with Cold Chisel as a group or Jimmy Barnes as a soloist, (not to mention the sublime Ian Moss or Don Walker) you have opened yourself to a MASSIVELY important and large Australian musical rabbit-hole…
Enjoy, as we will enjoy watching you 🇦🇺👍

Don Walker, the keyboard player of Cold Chisel wrote this. He didn't write it especially for Jimmy, but it sort of morphed into Jimmy's love letter to his wife Jane [been married over 40 years]. All his kids sing and play instruments. His Daughter Mahalia sings with Joe Bonamassa too, as well as solo, and she has a great soul/blues voice. Well worth a look at her, if you get the time.

Australia has never hidden their singers. Unfortunately, unless Australian artists permanently relocated to USA, they could not get airplay and Jimmy Barnes and John Farnham refused to relocate. Nowadays it is easier with the advent of the internet and social media platforms. Hence the wider world wide audience can now appreciate our long and varied musical history.

  • @jemxs
    @jemxs Před rokem +18

As always, I'm so glad you enjoyed another one of our Aussie legends!!! Joe's guitar and Jimmy's vocals go so well together, along with the top notch musicians of Joe's band! The performance I was tossing between requesting was Jimmy with his band Cold chisel doing a cover of Wild Thing on their Last Stand Tour from 1983...It really is WILD and the best cover of that classic rock toon and Jimmy is at his wild best! I went with this one as is an original song and also included an American connection with Joe, who incidentally was discovered by B B King at age 12!
There are plenty of options for you to look at with Jimmy and his band Cold Chisel along with duets with John Farnham. I'm sure they will all be suggested in the comments!
Cold Chisel did try to enter the US market but after being messed around by some record industry execs returned to Australia and wrote a song You've Got Nothing I Want in response to the experience!

So here's a link czcams.com/video/RAlFHSPLHpo/video.html. This performance was on a popular variety show at the time - Hey Hey It's Saturday (don't be alarmed by the pink ostrich at the start!). No your country rejected them when in band cold chisel
They came home and wrote a song about it with the middle finger to the American establishment
Watch him as youngster in cold chisel
Cover wild thing live performance last stand version
They have another singer Ian moss who as good and amazing guitarist as well as singer he doesn't sing much in this one
John Jimmy always live only always better
If you want to watch both ledgens together look up
When something wrong with my baby
This is John and Jimmy singing together commonly known as farnsey and barnsey by Aussie's
They both have atleast one no1s in every decade for 5 to 6 decades in Australia 🇦🇺

Your invitation to aussies to reveal ourselves - we’re not hiding - just living at the arse end of the world - well you’re mostly going to get Barnsey And Farnsey because that seems to be the demographic for the CZcams reaction gang and they’re mostly ready to drop off the perch sadly, they being artists and fans both. When I was young I preferred US artists. Jimmy was always drunk and Farnham sung a lot of crap songs though his voice is phenomenal. But now I too am feeling the inevitable loss.
When The War is Over is a classic song - best version Cold Chisel, live, 2010. Jimmy doesn’t sing much but contributes greatly to the play. Farnham also covers this song but I don’t recommend bc he’s in throw to his nutty fans and so has to loose all the gravity the song calls for. Bow River is another classic from the same concert and my personal fav. But if you’re wanting to hear Jimmy per se then you should check out “flesh & wood” 1993, compared to CC it’s semi - unplugged. A lot of the classic CC songs and others, without the vodka.

There’s other veins in Australian music that aren’t being tapped by CZcams reactions. Possibly the most iconic: czcams.com/video/Jf-jHCdafZY/video.html&ab_channel=YothuYindi. Most people know and understand this song, almost as many love it, and if most of those who love it take that love to a referendum in August, we will be a better country.

Ah yep, another true Oz legend. Generally had stronger material than John, but his voice is a bit 'small doses' for me. You certainly can't mistake him for anyone else though. As with John and You're the Voice Jimmy did scrape the US charts with his own signature tune Working Class Man, written and produced by Jonathan Cain (y'know, back before he was a mentalist).

America rejected Jimmy when he went there to break into the music scene because he wouldn't let them tell him what kind of music he should produce. You missed out on a great singer because US music producers are morons. Like John Farnham he decided to give the American music scene a miss and stay in Australia. Lucky for us.
