- n "Virtue" by W. Somerset Maugham, the narrator reflects on his lifelong habit of enjoying a good cigar, recounting how this resolution from his youth has been the only one he's kept. He ponders the labor and effort involved in producing such a simple pleasure and extends this thought to the consumption of oysters and lamb cutlets, contemplating the intricate history and evolution of life forms ending on his plate. The narrator then recounts a chance meeting with Morton, a young district officer from Borneo, in London. Morton, who had been hospitable and energetic in his post, now seems ....

Wow! Last remark of the piece!
Great story…. Top notch and the ending music!
Another riveting story of vivid characters and human dilemmas. I believe them all and engage in their lives.
Oh dear,what a story!
Listening July 1, 2024 in Santa Rosa, California. I adore Somerset stories!
So do i his storys are the Best not like todays rubbish.
From Spain
Maugham at his most brutal.
A cautionary tale for those seeming many that feel the need to relive the glories of youthful romance.
I am struggling to understand Mr. Maugham. Was he a romantic? A realist? He seems to want everyone to have " a happily ever after" or as close to it as he
can get them. Can Mr Maugham be found in his writings? I do enjoy his work.
@@doriewheeler8040 There's a good biography on UTube that I found pretty surprising. He led a very unconventional and scandalous life for any era, which I think explains a lot.
Another Somerset M. wise tale imbued with the right mix of cynicism and common sense.
Maugham was such a skillful and prolific writer!
Young woman contemplating affairs could learn from the wisdom of the characters in these tales.
Beyond any expectation!
Thank you.
Classic Maugham ! Though what he knew of women, one could fit on the back of a postage stamp. Thanks for sharing !
One would almost think he was a misogynist. But I don't think he really was, I think he enjoyed various aspects of the female kind. I think maybe more like an incel. But incels don't like women at all so that's not him. It's pretty recognized he was gay actually.
Snarky gay guy for sure
@@patriciamay6396you forget he was gay

I would never read a short story by someone who lacked virtue and hope to find any there.
Hypocrite.
😂😂😂😂
Is your artwork AI generated?
Of course it is. As is the AI voice. Doubt Maugham would have approved.
It is I'm sure - there are some very unnatural intonations
This 'reader' is not a real person??? 😊
That's right
Correct. A machine is reading.
Nope. AI
Maugham must have had such low expectations from women.
Her virtue was compromised as soon as she started meeting him in secret. No she wasn't a good woman but a stupid one married to a foolish husband who should have helped her instead of belittling the situation.
I really dislike the AI generated voices and most particularly the ghastly artwork. Truly inhuman and horrid.
