Fantastic tip using the “crayon” method for applying wax. I’ve been “dripping” the wax forever and I hate scraping, I wish I’d known this years n years ago.
PTEX repair is far scarier looking than it is difficult to do. It’s pretty hard to screw up, I mean you’d have to try to screw it up, it’s that easy. That said, a blow torch makes it (and most things in life) easier :)

Best tuning tutorial I've seen so far, and I've seen a lot! Neat idea with the clamp. Also, good warning on rounding out edges around the 7-min mark (being too aggressive on the filing). I unintentionally did this to one of my favorite boards when first learning to tune, and now it doesn't grip ice as well (and occasionally slips out). Anyone know how to correct that? Base grind to get everything back to even again? (I have other boards, but really like that board). Thanks!
Love the vids! Could you show how to properly fill in those minor base gouges with wax? I haven’t had the best luck myself. You could include that with your PTEX vid.
definitely a repair video. ptex and wax removal / base prep pre wax and tune. Gummi stones, how to use what brush at what time. should you use 3m fibertex pads etc

Good advice right there! I'd finish off with a structure brush (or a Scotchbrite pad as a cheaper alternative) run tip-to-tail.

I just got the swix digital.. was gonna get the 40 doller swix but moose jaw sold out so i splurged on swix digi, it was between swix and toko digital.. was gonna get it from amazon but their not authorized to deal so i went to my local shop and they gave me 10% off for the ski club members so it came out to same price as amazon.. i just put together a baller wax kit.. edge tuning next year!

Ive been repairing my base scratches with a resin plastic kit on amazon that works really good...A repair video would be really helpful to get better at it.
Great video @tommy! I am always confused when I have a few scratches and imperfections on my base, when do I wax fill or when should I PTex them. Any advice would be appreciated.

When using a brush after (forgot to add that) it doesn’t matter. If you’re just scraping and riding I would do nose to tail
So is the final brushing not necessary? Other videos I watch say to brush with a coarse nylon brush to get the wax down in the texture of the base. What do you think?
One thing I thought of that you didn't mention. I always run a gummy stone to deburr the edge before running the file.

Although what about preparing your base though, should you use a wire brush, on your board prior to get old wax off before re-wax? Once you've waxed and scraped should you go over with a nylon brush and then a horse hair brush to get it real smooth?
Ya, I was surprised he didn't cover that. You want to use a brass brush, yes, to remove the old wax from the structure. Wipe it clean, then run a microfiber soaked with a bit of 90%+ Isopropyl alcohol. Then apply fresh wax. Then let the board cool, then scrape, brush with a nylon brush, then a horsehair brush to polish.
You can also skip the post-wax brushing by applying the wax using Fiberlene Pro towels. Saves wax too. Then you just wax and go.
Tommie what about the various brushes? Are they more for a full tune?
2 questions- 1) what rub on wax would u recommend? I just got my first snowboard (extruded base) and I don’t want to have to spend another $100 on wax and an iron
2) if I do get hot wax do u think I could just melt it in the microwave wave?

wow 2 and 2 edge bevels sounds really extreme. I ride with a 1/2 degree base and 1 degree side wall...but I also dont do rails. Def more of a freerider than park. Ill hit the occasional box and jump though. I have never heard anyone doing 2 and 2
Do you use a spray for removing the old wax?
Yep, tune for what you ride most. I prefer 0 degree base, 5 degree side for aggressive carving on ice, which would probably be death for jibbing lol.🔪 Quick refresh every 1-2 weeks or when it can't shave part of your nail.
Thanks Tommie! How many days of riding between tuning and waxing? Does the iron temperature and wax differ for an extruded base vs a sintered base?
The iron temp is about the wax melting point and that doesn’t change with the base type. The base type does change how much the wax will get in the base.
Look at your board after every day. On man-made icy snow I get like... a day or two before I need to wax again. I'm sure real snow would be nicer.

Do you use brushes to finish the wax job or just scrape and go?
How MUCH scraping should you do? Should there be a visible layer of wax left? Should you be able to still peel a layer off with your fingernails?
there should not be a visible layer of wax. in the end you will end up scraping most of the wax off. this is because the wax that you need, that helps you board, naturally soaks into the base. anything that dries on top is excess and will harm your board in the long run.

Also something that wasn't mentioned in the video, use isopropyl alcohol to remove old dirty wax first (clean wax performs better). Also, I think you should remove your bindings, something to do with the hot iron and the threaded inserts on the base under tension but I may be wrong. For some reason it's not required for ski's.
Might be good to mention that you can sharpen the scraper simply by running it through a file, since you just need to restore the 90 degree edge
Considering the purpose built sharpener will set you back 36$ which is quite a steep price for no good reason
