The Deadliest Venomous Animals In The World

  • Some of the world’s deadliest animals have venom that's thousands of times more toxic than cyanide and can kill a human in minutes. Brown snakes, funnel web spiders, and blue-ringed octopuses are among the animals that you do not want to mess with. We spoke with Steve Trim at Venomtech (www.venomtech.co.uk) who helped us rank some of the deadliest bites to humans on Earth.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Following is a transcript of the video:
    You’ve been bitten! And uh oh, it’s venomous! How long have you got?
    Well, that depends on a few factors including the potency, dose delivered and speed of distribution. Turns out, not all Venoms act the same way. Here are the animals with the fastest-acting venom on Earth.
    First up: spiders.
    There are around 40,000 species of spider and most are venomous. But, thankfully, only a handful pose a threat to humans. Including the male Sydney funnel-web spider.
    Its venom is 60 times as potent as cyanide and can kill a human in 1-2 hours. The venom attacks the nervous system kicking it into overdrive until - ultimately - it shuts down!
    Of course, spiders aren’t the only venomous animals in Australia. It’s home to 20 of the world’s 25 deadliest snakes. Including the Eastern brown snake, which is responsible for the most snakebite deaths in the country.
    Its venom is 8,000 times stronger than cyanide and can kill a human in about one hour. Its venom also attacks the central nervous system but this time it slows everything down.
    And to top it off, the venom has a coagulant that causes the blood in your veins and arteries to clot. Between the two, it’s not a good way to go.
    Now, at this point, you might consider switching your Australian safari to a scuba dive just to be on the safe side. But, turns out venomous animals live in Australian waters too.
    Like the blue-ringed octopus.
    Its venom is 1,000 times more toxic than cyanide and it’ll bring down a human in just 20-40 minutes. Bacteria in its saliva make an extremely potent neurotoxin which paralyzes your muscles. And once that paralysis hits your diaphragm and rib muscles, you only have a few minutes before you suffocate to death.
    No, the fastest-acting venom on Earth belongs to the Australian Box Jellyfish or sea wasp.
    It’s not the most potent venom out there. But encounter one of these guys and you’ll be dead in 15 minutes.
    That’s all because of these things They’re COVERED with tiny, venom-loaded darts, called nematocysts.
    Which shoot heart-stopping toxins into the body wherever they make contact.
    All of this sounds pretty scary, but remember you’re less likely to die by venomous snails than by car crashes, an infection, or disease.
    And it’s not like these animals are after you anyways. They’d just as well prefer that you stick to your own habitat.
    But still be smart, be respectful, be safe.

    An episode of the British kids show Peppa Pig was banned in Australia because it contained misleading information about spiders. In the episode Mr. Skinny-Legs, Peppa and her little brother George encounter a spider and are initially scared of it until Papa Pig tells them that most spiders are harmless. While this is true in North America (with the exception of the black widow and the brown recluse, which are both deadly spiders) there are way more deadly spiders living in Australia. To keep kids safe, the episode had to be banned!

    The comparison to cyanide makes zero sense. How can something allegedly 8,000× more deadly than cyanide take longer to kill than something only less than 2,000× more deadly than cyanide and comparable to something only 60× more deadly than cyanide?. We went from 1-2 hours (60×) to 1 hour (8,000×) to 15 minutes (less than 2,000×).

    • @juniorm853
      @juniorm853 Před 5 lety +3

      Sans Handlebars guess you missed the part in which it said how much time you got to live depends on the following 0:13 .... hence why a jellyfish that injects venom into you with multiple tentacles whenever it touches you can kill you faster than a snake with 2 fangs

    • @ashIibabbitt1111
      @ashIibabbitt1111 Před 5 lety +3

      Junior M Which then cometely makes any such comparison to cyanide completely moot and arbitrary.

    • @juniorm853
      @juniorm853 Před 5 lety +1

      Sans Handlebars well considering the composition of venom can vary greatly between these animals i think the comparison is there just as a reference opposed to getting into exact details on what makes it deadly to simplify things for the average viewer Also you have to keep in mind that the title of this video is the “The deadliest venomous animals in the world” and what makes them deadly depends on BOTH the potency and a good delivery system In this case the snake has the more potent venom however due to the jellyfish having no other way to defend itself or even bluff themselves out of situations nor do they have the speed to escape predators they developed a good potent venom along with a delivery system that’s quick to kill off threats before any harm can be caused

    • @ashIibabbitt1111
      @ashIibabbitt1111 Před 5 lety

      Junior M Why not just use the timeframe for death as a comparison instead of an arbitrary and useless comparison to cyanide? You're arguing something ridiculous. If each venom is drastically different in composition to one another and cyanide, then the most logical metric would be to use how fast or slowly it kills as a measure for deadliness. If something is 8,000× more deadly than cyanide, but takes 4× as long to kill a person than something 4× less deadly than cyanide, then why bother bringing up cyanide as it becomes clear just how ineffectual the comparison is? Oh, and another fun fact: the lethal dose of cyanide (350mg) takes between 1-4 *minutes* to kill a full grown adult, making the comparison even that much more foolish.

    • @ashIibabbitt1111
      @ashIibabbitt1111 Před 5 lety

      Junior M So if 350mg of cyanide is lethal, and it only takes 1-4 minutes to kill, and a particular snake venom is allegedly 8,000× more deadly than cyanide, then logic dictates that a comparable lethal dose of this venom would be 1/8000 of 350mg or 0.04375mg. The snake will definitely produce much more than this 0.04375mg in a single bite. It's timeframe to complete death should be comparible to pure cyanide of only 1-4 minutes no matter how high the dose gets above 0.04375mg which is the bare minimum dose to kill a full grown adult. To further prove just how ridiculous of a metric the cyanide comparison is, the video does in fact order the deadliest according to the time it takes to kill, not its potency compared to cyanide. It doesn't even care to mention which component within each different venom is being compared to cyanide. It doesn't evsn care to mention how they are measuring deadliness aside from a basepoint with cyanide which seems to factor little, and a timeframe to death which seems to be the true baseline of the comparisons being drawn, and if it is this timeframe then why bother mentioning cyanide at all because apparently it doesn't matter. The spider and snake bites are comparable, but the jellyfish kills quicker by a factor of 4 despite being less deadly than the snake. It doesn't make a lick of sense and you know it.

    The most potent snake venom is from an Australian snake called the "Inland Taipan". There are three basic types of Taipan in Australia, the coastal, the mainland, and the "inland". Costal and mainland each use a neuro-toxin, but not the same one. The Inland-Taipan uses *both* of those neuro-toxins.
    That said, the snake has a relatively small and remote natural habitat, and is also more likely to try to avoid humans if at all possible.
