Watch The Lizzie Bennet Diaries: • My Name is Lizzie Benn...
Subtitles (and opinions) by Sophie Lesher - Krátké a kreslené filmy
I like that Lizzie wore makeup in the first few episodes because it reminds me of first-time vloggers kind of overdoing it to look their "best" for the audience. I'm so excited for this look back!
I totally agree! I also love how this was mentioned in the book and how Lizzie ackniwledged that she did over do it.
Here you go if you want a "this show affected people": my wedding is in 2 weeks, and I became friends with my soon-to-be wife online because we had both made webseries that came out of the wave of shows following LBD. Sometimes we'll jokingly be like "thank you hank"
Aww, best story! Congrats!
A few years ago, I did a presentation on The Lizzie Bennet Diaries in one of my digital media courses. Trying to quantify "Early 2010s Vlogging Style" in academic language was one of the more surreal moments of my life, haha
It really is a time capsule of the 2012 internet. Especially when you consider the in-universe, in-character social media accounts on twitter, tumblr, lookbook, thisismyjam, etc. I had to explain to a younger classmate that LBD predated instagram and spotify (or, at least, predated the point where they became ubiquitous, lol)
I started watching the day the fourth episode came out, and every episode after I would come home from school and run upstairs to the computer. Ten years later I now teach elementary school, and I’m excited to do the same for this series 😊
That is so cool!
As a massive P&P fan, I found this rendition an absolute joy. In the last 10 years I have come back to watch several times as a year. (Typically when RL got too difficult and I needed something to distract me). Thank you for giving me that escape and I am so pumped for this look back
I'm SO HAPPY to know that Ashley improved the "Shakespeare" line because that's legit one of my favourite lines in the whole show. It really shows Lizzie's whole sense of humour with one little line :)
Which line is that, and in which episode?
@@ru1634 Episode 1.
"Who wrote this?"
"Shakespeare."
The delivery alone is so funny.
The other true-to-the-book line I remember is Darcy saying “I was in the middle before I knew it has begun” in one of the last episodes, and I remember finding my copy of Pride & Prejudice to check if it was exactly what Book Darcy says.
I think there’s a few others. Especially the episode where Darcy professes love the first time
Someone posted the first chapter of _Pride and Prejudice_ on AO3 as a 'Lizzie Bennet Diaries Regency AU'. I can't find it at the moment, but it tickled me so I thought I'd share.
😂
This show was such a special moment in time, and I think for a lot of us, we'd never experienced anything quite like it before, or since. I'm so glad we're still talking about it and still looking back at it. Thanks for doing this, Ashley!!
Idk if it was on purpose, but Ashley is wearing the same shirt Lizzie used to represent herself on the videos.
If it was on purpose, I love the reference!
If not, it may be Ashley's subconscious
Do you think there's anyway that was not ON PURPOSE! Give a girl some credit! 😂
@@TheAshleyClements I believe we all knew it the moment the video started :3
Can we expect, maybe a newsboy cap? A bow? Pigtails and a book?
I was there day one and still cherish my DVD collection of LBD! I’m so happy we’re all doing this look back together. I’ve missed the intense shared love for this wonderful internet thing. 🥰
The community was, and remains, so special
I watched LBD before I had ever read P&P, or seen any other adaptation of it either. To me, Ashley and Daniel are THE definitive Lizzie and Darcy. I watched every episode as it came out, from ep 2 onwards (once it got a shout-out on vlogbrothers), and I followed all the "extra" stuff live, like Jane "had" a fashion blog on tumblr you could follow (I think 90% of it all was modcloth lol) and a lot of the characters "had" twitter accounts. It was such a cool multi-media experience that, imo, added a lot to the live experience.
this is so wild. I was 15 when I watched the first episode and now I’m halfway through my twenties (and filed my taxes this morning lol), but when I watch it back it feels the same and feels like time traveling to my high school brain
I was 20 when I watched it. Now I'm 28. 😊
I would have been 15 when it first came out, but I didn't discover it until a couple years later. (And I also just filled my taxes yesterday lol) But yeah, same feeling, it takes me right back to that time! ❤️
watching tlbd at 10 years old legitimately redefined the ways i thought a story could be told ❤so much love for this series
Sound like you were a very savvy 10 year old!
Hello from the 3,000! I can't speak for all of us, but *some* of us, mainly I think in the literary/vlogbrothers tumblr venn diagram of interest crossover were chomping at the bit for it because someone found the channel before anything was uploaded and it had some basic information like a banner and basic description or something already and it was exciting because no real significant adaptations had come out of P&P in ages let alone on the tubes and potentially involving the Green bros creative juices so we just kept checking it and then one day on Tumblr someone was like SOMETHING IS UP GO GO THIS IS NOT A DRILL and the rest is history. So yeah. Some of us were fans even before we knew ya ❤️
I was 30 when LBD started, but even I felt like it was made for me (kinda). As a huge P&P fan since I first saw the 1995 P&P in high school (so late 90s for me!), I had read the book, written college papers, watched Bride and Prejudice, and the 2005 version all before watching LBD. It was such a new take on the source material created in such an innovative way. I was ALSO a fan of CZcamsrs like Grace Helbig and the vlogbrothers. [That early 2010's level of authenticity is now on TikTok, I think.] As a 30-year-old with a job, I remember frantically waiting for my lunch break to watch the new episodes and hoping no one would walk up to my cubicle while I was watching. So fun to remember that time of life through this lookback. I'm STILL shocked that you all haven't been scooped up by traditional Hollywood. Still. So much talent!
I remember desperately asking for a tour of Lizzie's bookcase because whatever books she had, I was gonna buy them/copy so I could feel like Lizzie. 😂 I was 14/15 though!
In Fall 2020 I was teaching an online Academic English course to international first-year college students who were stuck in Asia due to the pandemic. I wanted them to get some more English input that they were missing out on by not being on campus in the US, so I started assigning them to watch LBD. There's so many types of speech in them! It was so well-cast they wondered if Lizzie, Lydia, and Jane were actually sisters in real life. One Vietnamese guy got so into the story he watched ahead and watched them all and got on Zoom one day saying, "I can't believe she ended up with Darcy! She hates Darcy!" lol Most of them had never heard of Pride and Prejudice, so this series inspired me to have them research and present other famous works of literature in English that they should be aware of and know the story for so they would better understand US culture and they had so much fun with that! I didn't learn about the series till 2014-2015 and I've watched it through several times. So well done and I'm excited to be able to follow along with the Look Back Diaries! Thanks!
I only discovered the show in 2016, and at the time I was also 24 like Lizzie. The best thing for me was that Lizzie actually inspired me to go to grad school, which I'd never thought of. It was of the best decisions in my life: it has given me a master's degree, then a job in the biggest company in my country, then my now husband who happened to be working there at the time, and now I'm in a different country eager to start our new life! Thank you so much for all the joy and inspiration. You and the whole LBD team rock!!
Amazing!
Ashley watching Grace Helbig to prepare for LBD?!?! What a coincidence, my college self was obsessed with Grace before finding the LBD lol. Great first episode 😄
Can you see the influence? I was mostly watching Hank and Grace to learn to vlog
@@TheAshleyClements I don't think I noticed at the time, but maybe that was one of the reasons I was drawn to the LBD because the format was similar? Also, I always felt with Grace that she was always very authentic? I don't know if that's 100% the best word, but I always connected with her more than, say, Jenna Marbles or Hannah or Mamrie (I still think they all are awesome, I just preferred Grace). I think I felt the same with the LBD, even though I knew it was acting, it just felt like just listening to a friend? Not sure.
Wow! How funny is that I discovered the LBD in 2014 and I just found the Look Back Diaries now, in 2024, also ten years later for me! Am I gonna ignore all the important stuff I should be doing, and watch watch all these episodes in a row? Yes I am.
When the Lizzie Bennet Diaries came out, I was a 14-year old high school student. I've been rewatching them this past year, and it resonates so differently now because I am, now, a 24-year old grad student, living at home, and preparing for a career. Some of the anxieties and challenges faced by the characters are much more present in my life (I especially relate to Lizzie's worries about her thesis and independent study projects!). I'm really excited that Ashley Clements is doing this vlog-style personal re-watch!
One of my favorite parts of the series was seeing how it changed over time. The makeup and jump cuts really made it feel like Lizzie was trying this for the time because of a school project. It made for such a contrast to the later episodes when there were interruptions of scenes that Lizzie hadn't anticipated. I thought those bits of realism really took the show to a new, unexpected level.
There are now a lot of TikTok accounts that do a lot of "one guy in different hats" to be multiple people and I think LBD Costume Theatre fits in nicely with that even though no one could know that would become a thing back then
For my theater exam, I had to recreate a video and I did an episode of the LBD. And tbh, I never learned the lines. I just did it like Ashley and I am very surprised to find that out! (Also, now, I can speak the whole episode from heart) I love the LBD, thanks to everyone for making the series possible!
Happy LBD Day! So excited to start this journey (again)!
Well, this is going to be fun! My older daughter, a huge fan of the Vlogbrothers, was living in DC and let her sister and me in Florida know about TLBD. It got to the point where I was not allowed to watch a new episode until the younger sister could get home from work, so that we could discuss it when it was over. It actually made me finally read Pride and Prejudice. When the Kickstarter came out, I was backer 15 and each daughter also backed it. I had the pleasure of meeting Ashley and several other cast members, as well as Bernie Su, at a couple of cons and got autographs on my box set of the DVDs. It is a prized possession. Happy 10 year anniversary, TLBD!
My mum and I used to watch new episodes together on my laptop in the kitchen after school while dinner was cooking 💕 So much love for LBD!
the gif for "Who wrote this?" "Shakespeare" is on the very official slides I made to talk about writing with our students. My coordinator liked the slides, so they've been incorporated into the syllabus
i can't believe i watched lizzie from like ep3, but didn't know about this nostalgia trip until today??? :o
I can't believe LBD is turning 10. It changed my life in so many ways: friendships, career, self-knowledge. I can't thing of a single aspect of my life that wasn't affected by this beautiful little show.
Oh wow, ten years! I loved this so much and I remember twilling around in my chair in my room with excitement when Lizzie and Darcy kissed. Can't believe that I'm now older than Lizzie! (WHAT? HOW?) (also, even as a die hard P&P fan I saw the first few eps as real lol)
I first discovered LBD as a recommendation on Felicia Day's The Flog. As an avid P&P fan I knew I had to check it out. 2012 was a rough year for me but I remember getting excited when it was time for a new episode. I would be refreshing over and over some days waiting for it to upload.
IIRC, I also came to LBD from The Flog ♥️ … doubtful that I watched the very 1st day, but definitely 100% on board (subscribed, following all the characters on Twitter, etc) by the end of the first week. I’m so happy/thankful/excited for this rewatch & lookback 🤗
'On this journey to the past' we've got a secret Anastasia fan here.
I can't wait to keep watching this look back. I have very vivid memories of waiting for the Lydia drama resolution in my freshman psychology lecture. It's probably the only thing I remember from psychology lecture 😅
Happy 10 years, LBD ♥️
Aaaah, this is so nostalgic!! LBD was the gateway for so many incredible LIWs, and it's so funny to think of myself watching these in 2012 (14, hadn't yet completely grasped time zones so kept checking for videos at 12pm GMT) compared to myself now (24, four months away from qualifying as a nurse, understand time zones significantly more). I remember actually writing a short project proposal for my Lit undergrad, talking about LBD in the context of adaptations as a whole (and let me tell you finding scholarly articles which discussed early 2010s fan culture was a TRIP to read). So excited to watch this retrospective!
So happy to see this happening. I adore The Lizzie Bennet Diaries. As a massive lit nerd (I liked it so much that I got a master’s in it) and a Jane Austen fan, I can confidently say that Ashley Clements is my favorite Elizabeth Bennet. Can’t wait for the next installment.
I'm so excited about this! I started watching The Lizzie Bennet Diaries when I was taking college courses, and found the series right before the week of final exams. Loved it so much that I binged it all when I should have studying. Happily, I passed my final exams and then got to watch the final week of the series as it was posted. No regrets!
Well, now guess who wants to watch TLBD AGAIN??xD (not that the yearning to watch it isn't always somewhere in the back of my mind!)
Can't wait to watch the other videos of this look back!♥
xo
Hello to all the other people watching LBD for the first time. I've been aware of the series for years, but never got around to watching. It was always one of those things for when I "had the time," like my ever-growing to-be-read mountain. But now I have the excuse of the Look Back to keep up in bite sized chunks.
I first watched LBD as a Tumblr-obsessed college student- I jumped on the bandwagon right as the Lydia scandal was unfolding, what a time to be alive!- and seeing Ashley in that shirt on my computer screen again is like being catapulted into such a specific historical moment. Now we’re all ten years older and I’m emotional. I never comment on CZcams, but this time I’m going to comment along, because I never loved anything on CZcams like I loved LBD. ❤️ Thank you for doing this look back series!! I’m so excited!!
LBD quite literally shaped my life like it started my interest in communications and media and I’m now studying that at uni (and also wrote an essay including LBD stuff in high school)
So cool!
Did anyone else notice immediately that she is wearing the infamous Lizzie Bennet flannel shirt!?!?!? 👍👍❤️❤️ Loved this show! I found it in high school! In 2012-2013 maybe??
the fact i was TWELVE when i first watched this show. a whole ass CHILD. and now i'm TWENTY TWO. like at least 50% less child
Yeah 50% sounds right 😉
LBD was such a little safe world for me, I was 1a 15 y/o kid in Argentina, super introverted. My friends had started going to parties and clubs, I didn't really like that. I was barely coming out of my shell back then. The fact that everyone loved the show fiercely, that it took place through several platforms and the cast and crew were available and interacted with us, and we knew the story, created such an inmersive experience based on community that is difficult to explain to someone who didn't live through it and it was extremely comforting. I was super lucky to find it on the second episode through Hank and get to experience it "live" 10 years ago. This is a world full of media and LBD was a little secret that stood (and probably still stands) unprecedented.
Also I'm 25 now and I used to think "why is she complaining she's doing great" and I totally get her now lol.
I started watching in 2014, because before that I lived in a country that blocked YT so I didn’t even know it existed 😂 I watched the whole thing in less than a week (since then I’ve watched it 6 times). I heard about it when I was trying to catch up on all vlogbrothers videos, so I heard Hank talk about it. 😊
I don't know if anyone will read this but back in 2018, I recommended this webseries to a friend who I wasn't particularly close with because he'd mentioned John Green on his Facebook and I said Hank Green made this amazing show based on P & P. This lead to many conversations about the series and 4 years later we're still together. I'm incredibly grateful for this show and it has a very special meaning for me ❤
fun fact: we joke about how my partner is REALLY similar to Mr Darcy. it's pretty cute. meanwhile, I feel like nowadays i'm probably a mix between Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet haha
A friend of mine who I went to college posted on Facebook asking anyone to watch The Lizzie Bennet Diaries so she can talk with someone about it and I did and fell in love with show. I remember waiting every week for a new one and being super excited and then messaging my friend and just fan girl over them. I still re watch all the episodes
I'm applying for grad school, so obviously, I re-watched the diaries. I was amazed that at least ten years passed since it came out. I was so young when it came out. Now I'm an English teacher, I have a job, and a fiancee. Nonetheless, the whole series was a reference to me, I always strive to have this Darcy and being kinda like Lizzie. Your acting was and still is amazing, thanks for that.
I was excited to see this woman in an egg commercial. Imagine how over the moon finding this video made me.
I NEVER CLICKED SO FAST IN MY LIFE!!!! SO EXCITED!!!!!
I was inspired to scroll all the way back thru to the beginning of my CZcams history to figure out when I actually got on the LBD train… only to find out that it (my official History) basically starts with April 12, 2012, with Ep 2 of the LBD! As in, I only broke down and decided I had to make an official CZcams account BECAUSE I had to subscribe to Pemberley Digital, after watching Ep 1.
Like someone else commented, I believe that I 1st learned about the show from Felicia Day (on The Flog).
I’m so happy/excited for this Look Back: thank you, Ashley! 💖
I loved the show so much!! This was my freshman year of college and i remember so much from that time based on the show. I have the companion Lizzie and Lydia books and I still reread them to this day ♥️♥️
I examined the LBD for my bachelor's dissertation as part of a transmedia text intersecting simulation theory. One of the highlights of my academic career was being able to present something I loved so, so much to my faculty and watching them go, "Wow..."
I’m about to start filming an LBD-style webseries, so loving all the behind the scenes facts.
Good luck!
I can't handle the idea that it's been 10 years. Cannot handle. Breaks my brain.
Time is a construct
I’m so excited to be on this LBD journey again, 10 years later! 2012 was one of the most difficult years of my life and LBD brought me so much comfort 💗
This has made me smile. (And with recent experiences I've been having, I direly needed that. So thank you.)
Like a lot of early fans, I first heard about the series when Hank Green talked about it on vlogbrothers. At first I thought, "Meh, it's based on a Jane Austen story; that's not really my thing. Most Nerdfighters are female; I can leave this 'LBD' thing to them." It wasn't until John Green started encouraging more people to watch the show, that I gave it a look.
I admit that at first, the hook that held my attention was, "Wow. These ladies are really beautiful. And intelligent, too!" Heh. But very quickly, I recognized it was a well-written, well-designed, and well-acted show that I became emotionally invested in.
I'm glad that I stuck with it, because the show coincided with a time period when I was in a really negative, even manipulative relationship; the day when my best friend, a yellow labrador, had to be put to sleep; and my first year of going to school in the USA, which was nothing short of hellish. So, it was comforting to have something to look forward to every week.
I know I've watched a few of the episodes again, but I don't think I've watched the whole series since it first came out. I think it will be nice to look back on these.
Ah, and before I forget, a few other comments:
- For the theme song, I imagined that Lizzie had a music friend from school, whose name we don't know, who composed the jingle for her. Either that, or Lizzie could have found it on some kind of royalty-free music website.
- Out of the Jane Austen books I've read in school, I've actually never read Pride and Prejudice. So, I can't confidently say what lines are found in the book. But I think I remember a few other lines that sound book-like. I seem to remember a hilariously awkward line in a future episode: "I have been meditating on the pleasure which a pair of fine eyes in the face of a pretty woman can bestow." Something like that.
- I think it's likely that Lizzie snuck a few items out of her mother's wardrobe, and that's why she has them. Or it's also possible that her mother thought Lizzie needed to dress more like a "proper lady," so she donated some clothes to her daughter, which said daughter has never worn, until the time for costume theatre arrived.
LBD is my comfort show! i put it on tv every now and then, especially the 1st ep bc it brings me sooo much joy!!
"So- I've stolen Dad's bathrobe and an old church hat of Mom's, and I'm brushing off my Southern accent to impersonate my mother." - The Secret Diary of Lizzie Bennet
The fans coming in with the save! There are definitely things people who have revisited the series/book more recently than I have will remember that I don't!
I just found out about this commentary series, from the exact same friend who first recommended LBD to me a decade ago. It was so surreal to find out there's new content about this series again ❤
4:37 I love how many of Lizzie's mannerisms are actually just _your_ mannerisms 😂
I think about LBD a lot because I now study communication sciences, currently at my master's degree. I remember that when I got accepted into university, I kept saying "I'm going to be the next Lizzie Bennet!", because a lot of people did an "I'm going to be the next X" when talking about their degrees.
I personally found it cause I had watched every adaptation of Pride and Prejudice and wasn't a fan of the modern ones but gave this one a shot...BEST DECISION EVER!!!
I was 16 when I first watched the show. Now, I'm 25, doing my Masters and older than Lizzie when I first met her. It's insane but it still feels like yesterday when I was waiting for the episodes every 3 or 4 days.
I watched this a few years ago back in college for an English class after reading Pride and Prejudice:) this series was so entertaining to watch
You're wearing the Lizzie costume shirt!! Amazing. I'm so happy for this rewatch. LBD remains one of my very very favorite shows. 🥰
Ah I’m gonna enjoy this so much! I found the series when I was in junior high, about 2013/2014, and it was a really nice escape and my first exposure to pride and prejudice!! I’ve loved keeping up with you and Mary Kate’s projects these almost 10 years!! Excited to go back and see it all again ☺️
Um, we like her immediately. Good vibes, funny, interesting, and sympathetic.
I remember when the bouncy jump cuts were a trend for everyone's videos. I could never watch without imagining them moving their stool across the room between takes so I'm glad you mentioned that lmao
I was glad when we stopped doing it
The Lizzie Shirt!!! So excited for this rewatch!
I have COVID right now, and I started rewatching The Lizzie Bennet Diaries because it is my favorite. Discovering this video makes me feel so much better. Thanks for making it!
Very excited for this!
Yes, I’m still here! 😁 Excited to rewatch this with you. With the rest of the fandom. Can’t believe it’s been 10yrs.
I remember when it first came out. I didn't really watch it ep by ep but I've seen episodes here and there. Now the past week my wife had me watch Pride and Prejudice and then suggested we watched The Lizzie Bennett Diaries. 🥰 Just finished it last night and I wanted to see more!
This is great! Thank you so much for doing this!!
I'm so excited for this.
Just discovered the Look Back Diaries after deciding to do a rewatch last week and I’m glad I did! I loooved the Lizzie Bennett Diaries!
i love this I needed this
I'm so happy about this look back!! I've rewatched the show so many times because it's always been a big comfort media for me!!
It’s crazy that now I’m the same age as Lizzie. Watching all those years ago that thought was non existent that one day I would grow up and become an adult too
HOW DID I NOT KNOW THIS EXISTED UNTIL TODAY???
Welcome
This series is filling my heart with so much joy! Thank you!
I am so excited for this series! This is such a trip down memory lane!
This is so excellent! Thanks Ashley - looking forward to watching you reflect
I'm so excited for this! All of the behind the scenes trivia are so good! This is my jam.
So extremely excited for this 💙 2012 was surreal and this little series helped me through it. Thank you!
This is so funnnn! I’m so glad you’re doing this.
This is so exciting! Thank you Ashley for this series!
I'm watching LBD rn for the first time, and I'm loving it! To see Austen getting adapted so brilliantly into the style of vlogs, goes to show her books will forever remain valid and there are always creative humans who can carry the legacy forward, for every type of generation to enjoy 💖
P.S. - Glad I found this playlist, I shall finish LBD soon and come back here for the lookback. 🏃♀️
P.P.S - Thank you Ashley for making these, and to Hank for making LBD 🥰
I can’t wait to watch this whole series! LBD is partially responsible for one of my closest friendships: another girl in my high school English class and I were talking with our teacher about a head cannon that a character in the book we were studying was based on Georgiana Darcy, and the other girl said “GIGI?!” and then we started fangirling about the series. Ten years later, we still talk on a weekly basis, and we’re stuck together forever now. It’s so wonderful to hear about how this series has impacted so many people ❤️
Was so excited when you did the intro! 😂 Been counting down the days until the rewatch 😂
This is going to be so much fun!
I own LBD on dvd 😂 loved this series. Been a Nerdfighter from the jump and the amount of affiliated content I have consumed over the years is staggering. And wonderful
I think i started watching around episode 12 or 13 came out... It was such an enjoyable journey! Since then I've rewatched it at least 4 times haha... And LBD is how i got introduced to the work of hank and John green! So this show had had a huge impact on my life really!
This is gonna be a great year, can't wait for the next episodes and the guests!
I discovered the series about a month after it ended (I've read about it on P&P wikipedia in the Adaptations section) and was so bumbed that I couldn't be a part of the anticipation for the next episodes but fortunately the community is still here and now this Look Back series is gonna fill the void from 10 years ago, so thank you!
Super late to this party but very excited to watch along! Also re: Mama Bennett's hat - in Secret Diary Lizzie writes that she took an old church hat of her Mum's and her Dad's bathrobe so presumably it was all her Mum's stuff.
I had done a rewatch recently because I missed it, and right before the 10 year anniversary! I'm loving that you're doing a rewatch too!!!
So SO thrilled for this!!! Watching the shows initial "airing" was obsessive and love of it remains so. So excited for all the little behind-the-scenes tidbits, and just to feel like I get to hang with Ashley and the gang again!
I love the flannel shirt. Nice touch. And thank you so much for putting this together.
I’m really looking forward to this! Love this look back and commentary. I was not one of the first ep watchers. I was introduced to the show the same day a certain high profile character was. Made for an incredible binge watch. The live experience of trying to watch the episodes as they premiered were so much fun. I still have Twitter notifications on for Lizzie.
