    Really enjoyed looking at all the different types of grass. I guess you are never too old to learn more and I now know that grass is not just grass.

    I noticed the dogs running around and playing in that field that means the ground is very cool for their paws and it makes them feel very comfortable to be walking around in there and playing

      That is a great observation. The soil is usually 10-20 degrees cooler than the ambient temperature. Thanks for watching!!

    Thanks, Russ! Recommended to your channel by Greg Judy here in Missouri. I've already learned quite a bit, like what grass seed to use for seeding pastures, and how to use your livestock to do so. On to watching more!

    You can feed bermuda grass seed to cattle and it will come up in the manure. And the cattle will not eat the grass that grows in their cow pattys for quite a while until the manure deteoriates. and the fertilizer from that cow pat gives it a good start. Ive seen corn sprout in a cow pat.

    This one field is more flat ground then I have on my 300 acres. I’m starting to divide my property up into paddocks so I can rotate my 40 head. Water is my issue

    Hi Russ, what do you recommend if you have old "horse" pastures you want to turn into cattle pastures. I have tried with frost seeding, but it does not seem to work for new type of grasses. Clover and nitrogen fixing plants can survive if you use frostseeding, but not grass seeds, which kind of making sense. We are doing everything to try to avoid using heavy machinery,.

      How long are your rest periods? Horse pastures seem to be the worst to get back into production. Have you tested the soil? maybe be something way off.

    I thought you meant feeding by the title. I can't find much on that method. I've been feeding untreated seed mix to my sheep with a small amount of regular feed the later half of this year and got some decent results so far. Morning and evening, a little bit of feed as a treat with some seed mixed in. I'm curious how much is making it through to germinate. Next spring will tell me.

      @@RussWilson I have to say that method worked out really well for you because that's a good looking pasture.

      I have seen 15% as the amount of seed that makes it through undigested, all depends on seed prices and costs/availability of conventional seeding at that point.

  • @charlotteboyett-napper257

    Beautiful field and gorgeous dog! What breed are they?

    Hi, how does this method of seed establishment compare to broadcasting after the animals have grazed (if you have tried this). Thanks for any response in advance.

    • @RussWilson
      @RussWilson  Před 2 lety

      You will get better growth from the seed you broadcast. The livestock get the seed to soil contact. Thanks for watching!!

    Enjoy your videos. I have 4 acres with a lot of trees & would like to raise just two head but wonder what you mean throwing seed infront of cattle & could I do it on my lawn which is most of my property? I have about 3 acres of open pasture & grass does grow between trees mostly brome. How often should I move 2 feeder calves to keep cover if I kill them in late fall to early winter & how big should my sections be? Central Alberta here.

    Hi Russ, how do you determine what seed to use for cover cropping and what ratios?

    • @RussWilson
      @RussWilson  Před 2 lety +2

      I used to be very fussy about my cover crops. Anymore I just want diversity. I will choose plants that do well in the type of soil we are planting into. Example Japanese millet does very well in swampy areas. As far as rate I plant the highest recommendation suggested from the seed company. Great question!!!

    Can I do 60% grass and 40% legumes as permanent pasture mix? I want to get goats and sheeps on rotation and stall feed too.

  • @french-canadianfarmer5049

    I'm working on this exactly. Thanks for the video. Do you always spray it off and seed direct?

    • @RussWilson
      @RussWilson  Před 2 lety

      I do not always spray. If the field is a total redue yes. A lot of the time you can just inter-seed and make the pastures productive again.

    Where do you buy your seeds, sounds like you’re getting a good price for good quality seed.

    Was the cost $40 per acre or the entire field.

    Have you had bloat issues with that much clover ?

    • @RussWilson
      @RussWilson  Před 2 lety +2

      Great question!! No we have very little troubles with pure clover. Few things we do is. Let it get a little bit more mature, we adjust the livestock rumen to the forage, and we had a couple animal that were prone to bloat. We culled them. Thanks for watching!!
