Evan, sometimes in my experiance it's fruitless to mix seed because I've found the smaller heavier seeds tend to work their way to the bottom of the spreader as using it. Then they tend to get spread separately anyhow

Evan why don't you plant Triticale wheat in that corn field. I planted 40 acres of broke ground next to 120 acres of pasture. It worked great 20 cow calves pair grazed it over the winter. Then in the spring June harvested it at 30 bushel to the acre at 1,200 bushel at $4.30 a bushel. Worked great.

Another technique to get an even spread is to dial it back to half the rate and make a second pass at 90 degrees to the first. Doesn’t make sense on large plots but on a field this size it should work well. I’ll be interested to see how this field shapes up after another year. Good luck.

I spent years spreading hundreds of tons of fertilizer by a similar method. I had a note book with various aperture settings and corresponding speeds to fit differing conditions and it worked well. GRASS however was always different. It was iffy to put all the seed in the hopper, you need some in case of? Half rate and going over it twice is the best option. All in all,,,Good job

It's been a while since we've done some seeding on our farm, probably due, overdue! It's a little bit of an art around here on the seeding and when I fertilize, usually overlap too much. I enjoyed watching, thanks and have a fantastic Friday and weekend ahead.

That brought back memories. My Dad insisted that we cross seed, go one way and then 90 degrees, across the seeding. As a teenager, it seemed like nonsense additional work. His hay fields and pastures always produced evenly. Dang it. I couldn't come up with a good argument against the cross seeding. Your video made me smile, remembering my Dad.

I dream of owning a farm, until that happens, I'm grateful for being able to live it from your eyes and kind of pre learn my lessons through you. I watch similar channels to yours, but your work ethic and unwillingness to give up (that tractor project is beyond my comprehension of taking on...your brave!). Good vid. Im already too late first week of March here in NC as we are getting grass growing, trees budding and blossoming and even daffodils already up and flowering… odd winter for us this year with zero snow….Also skipped weed kill last year due to astronomical costs so in line for that with high pressure weeds in pasture this spring already… will address that first then after seed once thats managed…

It will be very interesting to see how this turns out. The broadcast spreader is typically more accessible to people versus the drill. Would you have considered adding a little nitrogen in with the grass seed to give it the first boost. Good luck.

Put the mixer on a platform so that it's higher than the trash can for ease of dumping and less struggling trying to hit the can when dumping the mix. Fewer moving parts makes for easier work.

Is there any kind of prep work needed before top-seeding in an existing field? I've planted a lot of food plots, and done a fair amount of frost-seeding, but we always do something to expose the surface of the soil at least a little bit, so those tiny seeds can get down to dirt. In my experience, failure to do this turns out to be feeding birds more than anything else.

Not real familiar with hay fields but for a yard you would overseed early fall. Is hay different? Reason being the grass has more time to establish roots for the sumer heat. Just a question nice video
