  • Stress is illusion of control. We think we are all good once we think we have control. When we don’t have control; we think we are losing. However, we NEVER had control and we NEVER will.
In this talk from Mindvalley Reunion 2018, Srikumar Rao discusses how we can eliminate stress and anxiety from our lives, think differently and in essence, become a radically different person.

Finally fully grasping the power of forgiveness has relieved me of deeply held stress and I now feel so much peace and happiness in its place. I found the secret is to voice out loud blessings to those who you feel have wronged you, and not to just hold it as an idea that you know is probably true....you have to physically act on it. It’s also so easy to do, and brings immense and immediate relief, which I wish I’d discovered long ago💚

I have never thought I would watch a 50 min video on CZcams twice without forcing my self to do it. And I think I am going to watch it again later. Really good talk, Sir. And the idea of "I have no control over anything" is now ringing in my head all time. I am a person who only feels comfortable when everything in my life is under my control, and at the same time I went through A LOT in the past few years that had me put on all kind of medications and suffer from anxiety and panic attacks all the time. To where I felt at many times that this is not livable. Until I watched this video and realized how the heck did I not notice through all these years of my life that the idea of me trying to have control on the world around me is actually the main reason why I am always in a so much pressure and anxiety cycle. Since then and I am putting my self under a tough practice to always remind my self that I don’t have and will never have control over anything I go though or see in this world, to the smallest things in my life. And all of a sudden a more enjoyable and peaceful thinking way was born and growing quick in my head, which is living with things, accept some things in my life the way they are and just let things be. Beside surrounding my self with family and good people and Exercise. That idea of "I have no control over anything" gave me a new and strong weapon to use in this war I am having against my Anxiety that I am winning nice and steady.
A special thank you from the bottom of my heart to you Mr. Rao.

I went through a lot too since last year, and in July this year, I made my first panic attack in the night, I didn't understant what it was, never had one before. I couldn't breathe then my condition got worse, then I was diagnosed a depression. I have medication to take everyday for anxiety. Some days are quite good, others are a nightmare. For one month, I didn't have other panic attacks but I feel depressed most of the time, it's like my head is separated from my body. I overthink all the time, think about my future but don't live the present. I want to get rid off medication. I started meditation, doesn't work all the time but it helps. I try to focus on my breathe too. I'm glad you feel better now, hope it will work for me too.

Thank you for your comment. I'm struggling with anxiety and thus depression since a long time now. These past few days, it's been quite heavy. I wake up with anxiety, I sleep with anxiety, I feel like I'm becoming more and more helpless. I'm 26, unemployed, still living with my parents, and I have no idea what to do with my life. I had pictured this perfect world but it's nowhere to be seen. Everything and everyone revolves around making money, greed, consumerism and materialistic world and I am having hard time accepting it. I have different likes, different interests and not a lot of those are realistic, so future scares me as well. I haven't watched the video yet, these are one of those days where I end up spending whole day on CZcams watching these "life" videos. I have read a lot of psychology books as well but nothing really helps at the deeper levels of my own personal struggles. After reading your comment, I'm looking forward to watching this video. Hope you are doing well, my best wishes to you.

Something in the universe likes me so allowed me to be in the right place at the right time. This same power gave me perfect health without a single medical or health issue even though I am 74 years old. I worked hard all my life and didn't retire until I was 74 but it would be dishonest of me to convince myself that my problem-free life is a result of my hard work. Something, which I can't identify gave it to me. Really. I can be as happy as I chose to be.

If I can’t eliminate the source, I decide not to let myself get worked up about it. I think stress is a result of worrying. If I stop worrying about it, then I won’t get all stressed out. I also get enough sleep, nutrition and stay optimistic.

Most self-help talks are either shallow, unrealistic, unoriginal, unconnected to reality, everything you already knew or tried, over your head, ability or level, impractical for some people or just plain boring & unrelatable. Some ideas here are not new, but presented in a way that is practical and with a bit more insight.

Thank you, very inspiring. I feel you are and you should be in control of every situation in front of you , as it should be for every person in the same situation as you. You can always compromise with a situation or with a person through negotiation without hitting your stress hormones. I feel one way to reduce your stress is to try and predict a stress situation before it happens and deal with it by first taking a very deep breath and then face the stressful situation. Works for me, hope it does for you in addition to what the very learned Dr Srikumar Rao conveys to us with his intellect and wisdom.

This is a great video. For us Muslims, control is not in the hands of humans, like you said, but furthermore what helps with stress is knowing that everything we do, we do it as part of the cause and effect paradigm, except that the effect part is not solely depending on the cause, the effect is only triggered by the cause but it’s finality and realization is up to God, Allah or a high power depending on what the readers believe. As such, we have no control over outcomes but we have the free will for our own actions although don’t solely realize the wanted effects.

Now, when it comes to the dog and the wolf... My dog and my wolf are NOT fighting against each other. They're, in fact, best friends. So, I have myself, and don't need anyone else! ☮️

Yup, I look for the danger spots constantly. Partly due to experience with horses and horse riding. The has its own brain, they are naturally hard wired for survival, fight or flight and make that mostly flight and on the roads you are sitting on a ticking bomb. Drivers just don’t appreciate how sensitive horses are to their perceived idea of a dangerous devil. One driver passing me actually took my stirrup iron off my foot. Daniel and I survived only because Daniel was incredibly trusting of me and my stirrup iron didn’t become entangled with the cars mirror. My God we could have been dragged under that car and mangled. My friends experience with her stallion on the road, a bus got too close to hind legs, he became distressed at the air brakes which a dragon snorting for him. She tried to ask him to simply drop back a little before passing, he didn’t and Copper kicked out breaking the aide light with his metal clad hoof. Luckily no one was hurt and she was insured. But please drivers, be aware, dive safely for VERY good reason. It’s a matter of inches from life or death by your actions.

      WoW!!!
I've experienced that on my bicycle too! A cabbie decided to swerve off suddenly without checking for cyclists between the traffic lane of cars & parked cars. The sideview mirror hit my hip but because I was between cars, I had nowhere to fall.
Another time, a bus driver came into an actual bike lane & ran me off the road... I luckily managed to jump up onto the curb.
After that, I often go up onto the sidewalk in areas where drivers weave into bike lanes. I usually walk my bike then.
      Super scary sometimes.
And annoying if it's on a hill where I'm relying on my momentum to make it up & then suddenly clipped. Then I've lost the momentum & have to get off & walk it cuz it's too hard on my knees to start peddling in the middle of an incline upwards. Requires too much torque pressure.
People behind the steering wheel inside a moving vehicle of a couple tonnes of metal are too often too easily DISCONNECTED from their own body. So no surprise they're often completely unaware-let alone mindful & considerate of those around them relying on personal power (foot peddling or walking, or in your case the beautiful creature carrying you) on the ground.

What do I do to alleviate stress? Apart from looking at things like this video, I most often use a green-yellow-red scale/meter to be able to check my status at will. I also stopped setting goals. I realised goals are an image of what has been. Striving for them means strife to get back to a state that is already gone. I think in Scenarios now. Have a few to avoid, others that are more probable, and a few fantastic ones to be able to recognise fluke if it hits me.
The last trick actually dawned on me today. When my head spirals off into space, I ask myself "Is this an emergency that will irreversibly change things within the next fifteen minutes?" Mostly isn't, and I can let myself relax.
And the thought that what I perceive as "stress", is a feeling with a name that may be something else. Like "preparedness to create great stuff".
