- In this tutorial we're building an instancing network with which we move shapes according to different CHOP patterns.
Also, we build a little oscillator to change the shapes based on the audio.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask! :)

Thanks for another great tutorial!
You make TD learning engaging and accessible to anyone.
Starting at the end and working forward was very clear and helpful! I’d be interested in seeing this approach more often :)
You are the best!!! Love your tutorials and your clear English Thank you!!
Great tutorial. Nice stuff and very well explained. Thanks for sharing it!
you are giving up the best tutorial and very usefull, thanks a lot !
Beautiful. Thanks once again.
❤lovely work❤ thanks!
stunning!!!
great Tutorial! I added a "beat CHOP" infront of the first noiseChop to create more rhythm. Very fun project! thanks!
Thank you for another cool tutorial. One thing I noticed that you usually use a ramp and a lookup top to make the bg black. This might be troublesome if you have dark pixels in your render. They'll be affected by the ramp. If you just want a black bg, use a transform top, change the alpha to 1 and switch on Comp over BG color. Hope this helps :)
Thanks for the tip :) I'll implement in future projects!
So cool! Thanks a lot!
great man! tks for the teachings!
very intuitive ,thanks a ton!
beautiful black color 🖤
thanks! keep 'em coming :)
thanks, this was fun!
thanks a lot, great work !
Thank you!!
amazing!!!
thankyou for the tutorial, inspired me :)
Great Tutorial ! :D thx !!
really useful tthank you!
Hello, incredible work! i've been attempting to make the shapes move according to audio in file but finding it the result is not having a similar effect to this? any help and guidance would be much appreciated. thank you.
Thank you man! :)
thank you!!!
Niiiice. Thanks!
Thanks! Let's see what this can do with analog synthesizer attached to it :P Last night I thought about making 'fake' vector synthesis oscilloscope -style project in TD, but ended up with something completely different. This look more like it :)
You are amazing! Thank you :)
Glad you enjoy them, thanks! :)
awesome :)
cool, man! keep going!=)
Great Work:)
how can I include sounds in the output?
I try to make this but phase script didn't work The Phase is counting up but im just see still rectangles after i link the instance null to the geo
I'm useing TD Build 2020
I use that expression absTime.seconds * 0.2
Try absTime.frame
I have same question. The CHOP is working fine but the shape doesn’t move when I attach the it into geo1 instance.
I love all of your tutorials! However, my background is not turning black and I am not seeing a rectangle. Please help!
cool thx a lot
god bless you
Just as some other people commented, phase doesn't make shapes move here, 2020 build...actually, if i change ramp to triangle for example, they DO start to move, not exactly the same way but still.
Heard that from others as well and just tried it, apparently, for weird reasons, this doesn't work in the 2020 version anymore :/
@@elekktronaut is there a fix?
Last night I was able to get a work around going with an audio file in chòp, but can't get the patterns to work at all
Thanks again, any plans to do something with imported pre made 3d meshes such as obj, 3ds etc and then making them react to sound or have particles move around/react with them? Would be interesting. I plan on working on a city 3d environment made in Blender or 3DS Max and having car trace lights etc move on the ground etc. Thanks!
I've played around a bit with imported 3D objects but I don't know a lot about it tbh, like I don't do modelling or anything. I'll have a look if my experiments are tutorial worthy :)
Ok thanks @@elekktronaut !
In the newer vesion of TD, using the pattern chop to animate the translateZ value of the instances will result in no animation at all.
I think that what is happening, is that it isn't a "smooth ramp" but rather a "stepped one", if that make sense. That would mean that the instances are indeed moving, but their translateZ values are jumping instead of being smoothly interpolated. Instance 1 jumps right where instance 2 used to be, wich jumped right where instance 3 used to be, and so on. So visually, everything looks perfectly still.
I've managed to get it working by replacing the pattern chop by a wave chop, setting its type to "ramp", setting its period to 10S and using the absTime.seconds to modulate the phase, juste like in the video. So this works, but I have actually why! If someone who knows whats going on could share some knowledge that would be cool.
edit: I'm using TD 099 Build 2020.20625
Awesome, thanks!
@@elekktronaut Thank YOU! Those are awesome tutorials, I'm making my first steps in TD following your videos and they are awesome! They are pretty easy to follow and give gorgeous outputs!
Thank you both
How can you change de length parameter of the "Wave Chop" ?
@@MxSkirelCrew you can change the start and end interval in the 'Channel' tab. If you change the units to Frame and not second, you will control the lenght of the Chop
Hi! Firstly, thank you so much for your tutorials, they are really helpful and cool. So quick question, I was wondering how to export the movie with sound, but not sure how to get the sound to come through. I'm probably missing a simple step.
Thanks! Just drop your audiofilein on the corresponding part of the movie file out. I've also got a video on exporting.
@@elekktronaut Oh dude! Thanks, I did up finding your other video and followed the steps. It worked out great. Thanks a lot, I'm learning a lot from you.
Thanks for these tutorials. One question on this one: my rectangles are rendering with a diagonal line between the bottom left and top right corner. Is this a setting somewhere or something I missed while following along? Thanks!
Same for me! Thought I missed something too (Working on 099 Build 2020.22080 64Bit).. Patrick, did you manage to figure this out?
Fai Chung no sadly I did not. Haven’t kept looking though. I would assume it’s a setting but I suppose it could just be an update? If you figure it out please come back and let me know.
I think I found a solution but only half way through the tutorial but there is no more diagonal line. In the wireframe1 Material, change the wireframe mode to Topology Wire Frame instead of OpenGL.
Fai Chung that does it! Thank you!
Same here! 2021.11180 Mojave 10.14.6
Hello! Is it possible to use another sound file?
Hey Bileam, love your tutorials, thanks very much. Could you please explain how are you deciding to choose those ranges on the Math chops for tx, tz, sizeX etc. Like what is the logic there?
Also, when you put the tx as an instance reference; the rectangles started to shift on the x-axis as expected. But why they stopped coming towards the Z-axis as it was before?
I followed it, but there is a diagonal line for each square. it doesn't disappear, how can I get rid of diagonal line?
wireframe1 MAT--->wireframe parameters--->Wireframe Mode---> Toplogy wireframe. That will get rid of the line!
