- In this video I explain how you can create a what I call audio wheel - a circle composed of lines which represent the audio spectrum of a song.
The final result is an artwork which holds an entire song in one image.

hey i really love your stuff. Probably would be great if you describe the nodes that you are using a bit and why you are using it. For me as as beginner it would help learning. But again, awesome tutorial
dude your voice is therapeutic
Loving all your tutorials man!! Great work... even though I just started with TD, this is a very inspiring way of making cool stuff while learning, looking forward to see more of the wicked stuff you have on your instagram
Thanks a lot ❤️
Great job, glad to see so many more of your tutorials!
thank you for this. Ijust discovered Touchdesigner today, wich seems to be the right tool to play and experiment with both of my visual art and modest music productions. You sir, have been my first step into it. Still a lot to learn but it seems amazing.
Super enjoyable to watch! Huge thank you for your work.
Solid visual and your playlists. Obsessed. Thank you
Hey! Thanks for the awesome tutorial. It's a nice way to visualize the full audio track. I actually made a variation of it. I changed the grid that is used as instances, to circle and made it grow through time. So I get a similar result but the time is in xy axis rather than going 360 degrees. Also I made the circle rotate slowly so I got a spiral kind of image. Keep the tutorials coming!
Thanks! That's a really cool idea, I'm gonna check that out.
New tutorial coming very soon :)
Hi DavilOne, I tried to follow your suggestion to grow through time in the xy axis but I couldn't achieve it. Would you explain a little bit how you didi it? Thanks a lot in advance!!
Hi Bileam! Thanks so much for this stunning tutorial. It's so much fun to learn with you 😊 I added a "keyboard in" to retrigger the pulse, because I'm a kind of lazy 😅 See you in the next tutorial!
Thank you so much! This was exactly what I was looking for. Your "screwups" with your words/sentences and how you reacted to them or fixed them was also funny and "good stuff" so all n' all it was an enjoyable learning experience.
Ps. Would love to see some "glitchy video"-tutorials for TouchDesigner made with sound as a noise input for an actual video clip. Just an idea if you are going to continue with these in the future!
Thanks for your kind words. Glad to hear my videos are helpful (and fun) :)
Have you checked out my "Moving Through Shapes" tutorial? That might be what you're looking for. Otherwise I'm gonna need a bit more precise explanation of what you have in mind..
I am new to touchdesigner and I really like your tutorials. richtig gut!!
Thanks a lot for this tutorial, I wanted to do that since one or two years !
This looks so frigging good. Definitely building this!
One question: Any particular reason why you're using instancing instead of CHOP to TOP for drawing the spectrum?
Great tutorial! well explained and made easy!
Amazing tutorial! Thank you so much. In relation to improving the clarity of the audio waveform, is there a method to enhance its resolution and sharpness besides adjusting brightness or gamma?
Thank you for your tutorials! As a suggestion on triggering pulse (at 15:30), you can paste reference of a pulse with a "op('audiofilein1').par.cuepulse" into another operator pulse (or as an value for CHOP)
You're welcome! And thanks, I'll try that out!
Super nice tutorials!Thank you so much
Hey dude this is a wicked tutorial, your channel is awesome :)
With shorter audio files, the feedback doesn't draw fast enough so you end up with choppy lines instead of the smoother gradient. How could you increase the lines drawn by the feedback for a shorter audio file like this?
Awesome tutorial, thank you!
Thank you so much Bileam. I have learning great things from you... :)
in 7:05 you add a Geometry Comp - but for some reason in my project it looks a bit different and wont connect to the other elements... any idea why that happens?
Great work ! Thank you for that !
Hi! this is a beautiful tutorial-I am new and seem to have an issue with restarting the feedback. I can restart the feedback on the top but the feedback already generated doesn't seem to go away. Also how do I scale the feedback down? mine is huge in my screen and goes beyond the boundaries of my BG-I believe I missed something?-thank you!
Great tutorial! Can I add a button to restart the audio instead of using pulse?
Thank you so much I love your work
Thanks for the tutorial! I solved the issue with syncing the song start and resetting the feedback by just hooking both buttons up to a Keyboard In CHOP ^_^
Hi, love the vid :) Got a question. Is there a way to input different parameters so I creates a sort of "parameter wheel" 😅 for example: different colors, or different line thickness n so on... would be really grateful if you know anything related to data visualisation or just input different data and it creates a visualisation :)
Best, Robin
Hi Bileam, I followed along with this tutorial and while it seems to be the same as yours I am only getting a ring around the edge of the circle instead of an actual spectrum of audio. Could you help with this? Thank you!
hi I'm from China.i have watch 2 tutorials in your channel.do you know that a few chinese can watch video on CZcams.so can I show what I learned from your tutorial to more chinese with a new video?cuz your tutorials is so useful!
Great stuff!
just a small question, if i have to import the image, how will i do it?
thank you soo much! the tutorial is really goood
great tutorial m8!
This was a fantastic tutorial. Many Thanks!
hey do you know how i can connect the GEOMETRY to tranform cause i cant , sorry i am new to this ...
I am no expert, but Geo typically goes into a Render TOP and then you can transform etc. Hope that helps. The tutotial does show that connection. @@katerinapsarrh1161
Hey! Do you have a tip to let the circle disappear again? like a radar?
Thanks for the tutorial! For some reason, my grid lines are much "taller" than yours so each bar is really thick. The center of the visualization is solid white from all the thick overlays so there's no pattern inside, just a block of color. Any tips/ideas why mine looks so different?
doh! started over from scratch and realized I left the rectangle transform node on 1 instead of 0.1. all good now.
Is there anyway that you could make this with audio device in instead of audio file? I tried selecting the cook_frame parameter to reference the rotation but it doesn't seem to convert to 360 with the math node :(
Mil gracias por este apasionante tutorial y despues de hacer el pacht solo hice una pequeña aportacion cambiando el fondo y añadiendo algoi de rojo¡¡¡¡¡ salio todo bien
Thanks great tutorial!
Do you know how to create, that real time live performance sound in this visuals.
If you know please also tell me real time live performance video manage with these effects. for example the artists around some effect and the effect react the sound etc...
did you find the solution ?
ah, history!
hey bileam, thx for the tutorial. I tried based on your video to create an XY Oscilloscope and failed haha, you like maybe to invest some of your know how on the topic and create a turorial. cheers and thx!
is there a way to use an image on the audio wheel?
Does anyone know how to add some more movement to different parts or make it move faster?
Hello and thank you very much for all these tutorials, your instructions are super clear and I can follow perfectly. Thing is, I'm not a programmer and I'm learning touchdesigner and even though I have some knowledge in 3D there's still a lot of things that you do and I just copy without really knowing how it works. I messaged you on insta but I'm going to ask here anyway.
I don't really understand what the spectrum does or the resample, I'm not a musician either but I can't find a "simple" or rather, not technical specific explanation.
Also does the merge node just "merge" the channels without disrupting them? Say, like a selection chop but the other way around?
Concerning the camera, I don't understand why 70° on z puts the camera in that spot, it doesn't make sense(to me) coming from Blender.
I also don't understand the math behind the geo translate based on the grid reference.
I think I understand the logic behind everything else.
Sorry if it's too many questions, if anyone wants to chime in I would be super grateful, I'm a videographer and visual artist but I'm really into touchdesigner, want to learn python but I really struggle at the beginning.
Hey man! if you like to talk about all your questions, have a look at my patreon page, cause I can't really answer them all here. Thanks!
@@elekktronaut I will thanks
you said 'scoot that over there' props to Hr. Ragan!
nice tutorial BTW
Well I did learn from him 😌 Thanks!
Hi, I'm a beginner on touchdesigner, I'm stuck, if you could help me please... What is the clockwise symbol, i can't find it? Thank you
neat! thx a lot!
I'm new to TD, so I'm sure this is a totally newbie issue. I can't get a regular patch cable between the transform and the Geo like you did. The cable will not connect-I can only do a drag and drop thing to create one of those straight line with the arrow things to connect them. This is at 7:08. Thanks!
oops-just seeing the same question answered below!
Can anyone help - have watched this a few times and the only thing I can think as to why its not working is in the GEO COMP>Instance - when transferring it from the INSTANCE operator I don't have the parameter "Instance CHOP/DAT/SOP" but instead "Default Instance OP". Had looked at options to create a custom operator but that didn't work. Any ideas let me know, thanks
hey very nice tutorial but do you nknow why the Geometry doesnt connect with Tranform in the programm ? Something changed about this and i dont know how to fix it .
How would you make this 3D? Using a height map or another method? Also I want combine this with another graphic in the background. How would you do this without unintentionally wiring nodes together?
Not sure if this is related to a newer version of TD, but putting the spectr into the alpha slot of instance 2 colour stopped this from working for me. Just the RGB slots were enough to work.
Yeap, it should be the difference in versions cause I`ve had the same problem)
Hi! I'm new to TD and I love your tutorial, I'm trying this out on the non commercial version, and I did get the result after step by step following :D but then TD chrashed as I changed the settings in opperater of 'audio device out', and as I redo the whole thing, at 8:23, when I changed the color rbga channel to 'spectr' , the line became a pixel box, I followed the steps along but I just couldn't get the result (I did tried update but still can't get the result).
I'm having the same result.. how did you fix it?
I think you have to shift the camera's x value by the size of the grid so 30 in this case @@IvanCarosati
My Null says there is a user error but I cannot identify what is wrong
how to record the final video And output as mp4 or some other format
Have a look at my "Exporting" video
Thank you
for some reasn at 7:20 when i put the constant into the geo it doesnt connect
jk i fixed it some bug in touch deisgner i guess. I reloaded the project and now it works. Btw ur english is great
how you add automatically nodes from other? just double click?
Mouse wheel click or right click
Hi i'm from july 2024, the latest td version and i dont have instance CHOP/DAT/SOP in geo. What should i do then? Can you help, pleeeease
how do i export the image? ou send it to perform mode to an projector for example?
great tutorial man! tnks
i found out how to export the image as tiff, but i also want the video.
@@silverioleo8621 you can always screen record and crop?
Hello! Thank's for your video lessons,I get pleasure from watching. But i had any trouble in process - i can't attached transform node with Geometry node. What i did wrong? Can you help me? For information - i have non-commersial version of programm=)
Hey, I'm glad to hear you enjoy them. You need to first create the rectangle and transform and then from the transform, add the Geo. If you create the Geo first, there is not "in" and "out" contained. Does that help?
@@elekktronaut , yeah, your recomendation helped me=)if I understood correctly, in basic settings nod Geo empty "in", that's why i can't attach
Thank you!!! Is there any way to adapt this to audio device in??
Hm good question. You could probably define a specific length of the circle and then just use the audio device in's spectrum.
@@elekktronaut i'll try! always thank you for your tutorials and kind answers👍
@@elekktronaut sorry for this noob question but how to define a specific length of the circle? truing to figure out how to make in with the audio device in
Done! :D
hey is there a way to make this in real time by using a mic as a sound sensor??
Update i have figured it out :')
which remix of says - nils frahm is this please?
it's the original :) live version
V cool
Hey! I'm trying this out on the non commercial version, but it doesn't seem to work. First of all the Look tab doesnt appear in my project container (when I zoom out, the step in 9:18 ) in , and despite that I do everything like you did, but no lines appear in my "canvas", just a black box.
Hey. Do you have the latest version installed? Because I think they changed the layout of the containers rather recently. And if it doesn't appear in the container try clicking the cross on the operator twice (off/on) and change the the "Background TOP" name to the corresponding null in the project. Hope that helps!
Did you have luck solving this ever? I feel like I'm having a similar issue.
@@elekktronaut hey! its difficult problem... but please tell whats in your geo?)
@@elekktronaut in our "geo" only "torus"...if I add components "in/out"the desired input output appears but there is no image and signal(sorry for my English)
How to export the results? As animation
What's the song?
I think it's original ?
it comes with touchdesigner.
