My favourite part about the Bowling watch parties is when someone hits a pin, and everyone shouts in unison, " Its Bowlin' Time! " and Bowl all over the bad guys
Maybe you kid, but I did for ~20 years think that it was some big bowling tournament before realising that it was football.
And then it was another 3 years before I realised that it wasn't soccer.

I will say, I think the place these expressions come from is insecurity about not knowing what's going on, and an attempt to owning or leaning into being an outsider in regard to the sport
Good PSA. Rather than watch the game, I am going with my mom and sister to a cross-stitch shop that has a sale every year "For the wives while their husbands watch the big game." I don't know anything about needlework. I'm a crocheter. I can say "boy this yarn sure is little" to every skein of thread I see. I might call ada "linen" or vice versa. The important thing is I'm having a day out with my family and when it's done, there will be frozen yogurt. :)

I've never really followed sports myself, but I can't imagine going to a party specifically *for* watching a sporting event and acting smugly disinterested in it the whole time. If you don't like something, that's fine, but maybe just don't go to it instead of going and ruining the fun for people who do like it. This goes for any hobby, really.
I just go and watch and stay quiet. Its just nice to be with family or friends.

As a Finnish person I needed to know there's a non-sports person among any Super Bowl friends group, thanks. It's like when we watch Football (EU) or Ice Hockey, I'm that guy. I'm the guy who doesn't care thaaat much about sports but enjoy the company anyways

I am instead the guy who refuses to arrive at such events... I tell them "I don't like sports, but you enjoy yourselves, as I wouldn't enjoy it anyway" and I personally believe it is the way to go about it... I can buy some chips enjoy them at home without having to watch sports, while you get to enjoy the sports without having to keep me entertained, or interact with me, while you'd rather just focus on the sports event... I recommend just not going to everyone who doesn't like sports!

I am that person. My father was a track star and my brother has a full ride football scholarship. I know the terms but I purposely use them incorrectly to piss them off. That way, they can't see through the rage and I can rob them of all the snacks and disappear. Hell, I actually learned and memorized nearly every rule and terminology just to purposely use in an incorrect fashion because that bean dip and chips will be mine.
