Pikes Peak Hike via Barr Trail

  • I took this hike on July 13, 2016. It was my first time to climb Pikes Peak. I had the perfect weather and day for this awesome adventure. I started the hike at the Barr Trailhead in Manitou Springs at 4:45am and finished about eight hours later at the summit. I used a GoPro to take the time lapse images and a Sony RX100 IV to shoot the video.

    Jason, thanks for the detailed video. It was entertaining, and helpful. 35 years ago I lived in Col Springs, and hiked PP at least once a year for six years. IN a month, my brother and I, now well into our 60s, are heading back to Colorado, to hike the Peak, and back down, but in two days, with an overnight at the A-Frame. We've both been walking here in Kansas, 3 to 12 miles a day, for five months, to get back in shape, and ready. We'll be carrying about 16 pounds. Your video refreshed my memory on a number of places along the route. We appreciate it! Mike

    At a low point in my life, being stationed at Fort Carson. I popped 4 tabs of Acid and made this trek in 6.5 hours. In a strange way. I lost and found myself up there all at the same time. Most amazing experience of my life. So beautiful and peaceful❤️

    I want to hike the Barr trail again. I have been training for a long hike this summer either there or the Grand Canyon. I workout several times a week, spending 1/2 on the stair climber and 1/2 hour on the cycle machine. I push myself hard on these machines until I am drenched in sweat. I am trying to build up my endurance. I am pretty good shape for my age (61) and have hiked the Grand Canyon the last two years and the Barr trail back in 2009 but can never be over trained

      @@MrCrader Oh my gosh, I just now saw your comment. It was been a couple of years since I viewed this video. I ended up hiking down the Bright Angel Trail from the south rim of the Grand Canyon to the Phantom Ranch and back out to the top. It took about 4 hours to get there but another 6 hours to get back to the top. Needless to say, I did not set any speed records. It went well as far as hydration. Before I set off on my hike, I filled my camelback water pack with ice and Gatorade plus there where places along the trail I could get water. Next time I will eat some bananas before and during the hike so I will have enough potassium to hopefully avoid the body cramps I experienced after the hike.

    Throughly enjoyed every minute of this superb video narrative. I lived in COS as a kid in the 60's and while I had numerous chances to hike Barr Trail and ascend The Peak, I wasted all my time climbing the rocks in the Garden of the Gods. Dang, I even rode the Mt. Manitou Incline to Mt. Manitou's summit, where I could have hiked the remainder of the way to the summit but still I wasted all my chances! Now I'm 69 with 2 artificial knees and 2 artificial hips and I'm guessing it's likely too late. I was very impressed at the hard work the Incline Club volunteers have done to restore the old Incline rail-bed, thus making it possible for so many to enjoy this unparalleled climb. For too many years, it laid wasted. Thanks again for your great story!

    I hiked this with my platoon in 2000. I really wanted to quit, I was a soldier, but not exactly the fittest you had ever seen. The thing I really remember is not using sunscreen, which left me blistered on my neck and head. I ended up with some kind of heat exhaustion I think. The incline shaves more than just a mile off the hike. And at the beginning you said pikes Peak is one of the hardest 14ers in Colorado. it’s not the hardest it’s just the longest at 26 miles round-trip. The three sisters down south are so much harder, especially if you try to hit all three of them in one day.

    I attempted to hike up on July 15 (2016) and planned to take the cog railway down, but I missed the turn at the Bottomless Pit Jct and by the time I realized my mistake and got back to the Barr Trail, it was too late to make it to the top in time to ride the train down. I'm not sure if I misread the sign, or just followed the people ahead of me who also missed the turn, but it IS possible and it can spoil your plans, so heed Jason's advice. I enjoyed the video and plan to try again this year. Last year, on the day before my attempt, I drove to the top of Pike's Peak and hiked down for a hour and then turned around and went back up. It took 2:45 to cover the same distance going up that took 1:00 going down. I did this to get a feel for how well I could handle this most difficult part of the hike in the thinnest air.

    I had heard that about the ibuprofen from a local as well. Can't hurt either way. The gist is that it thins your blood to let more oxygen in, I guess. If you don't mind me asking, did you have a day pack? It only looks like you and your buddy had camelbacks and water bottles. You also mentioned snacks. How much and what food did you bring for energy? Congrats again on your accomplishment! I'm psyched!!

      Yes, I had an Osprey Talon 22 Day Pack with a 3L Camelbak Hydration Reservoir. I believe I drank around 1.5L of water and a small gatorade. I didn't eat too much on the way up. I believe I had a Cliff bar, a few peanut butter cookies and a pack of peanuts. Once you get to the top, you can get food in the store. I bought two donuts and a chicken sandwich. You can also fill up your water bottles or Camelbak there for free at their water fountains. There was no drinking water available at Barr Camp halfway up the trail, so make sure you bring enough to get you to the top. There are restrooms available at Barr Camp and on top too. Good luck!

      I just finished this hike with a 20lbs pack. I required 4 litres of fluid, and 2 Fit Crunch energy bars. I put C4 pre-workout and BCAA's into my drink for energy and recovery. Ibuprofen does help as well.

      Hi Eric, Thanks for the nice comment. Good luck hiking Pikes Peak. I don't think you'll need a map. I did it without one and it was marked fairly well. There are a couple places around tree line that get a bit tricky but I managed to find my way without getting turned around at all. I'd love to hear back once you guys complete your journey. good luck!

    Great work with the video. Congrats on making it to the top. Well done! I’m not that impressed with the view though. Too much of the view is looking over flat lands/civilization. Reminds me of AZ. Not worth the huge effort, IHMO. I’m very picky though.

    Planning to hike up pikes peak next year. From your video I didn't notice any spots that had a lot of loose stones which would make it impossible to hike it up in my five finger Vibrams without breaking a toe or two. Can you confirm what I think I'm seeing what the trail is like.

    • @JasonCrader
      @JasonCrader  Před 7 lety +1

      I've not used the five finger Vibrams before so I can not speak from experience but if you're use to using them, I don't think there will be too much of a problem. The path up the mountain is relatively clean and well defined. Having said that though, my feet are very sensitive and I can't imagine doing that in the Vibrams. I'm a boot kind of guy. Good luck with your climb and I'd love to hear about it once you make it to the top!
