  • The IRA announced on 9 February 1996 that their ceasefire was over, simultaneously detonating a truck bomb at South Quay station in London Docklands. BBC One broke into a programme break to broadcast a 'News Report'; the sober news clashes horribly with the stand up comedy show Gagtag which was being shown before.

1:19 - When Denis said he talked to people at the very highest level in Sinn Fein, you can be 100% certain Denis was on the phone to Martin McGuinness in Derry, he would be the first port of call for any journalist back then.

I remember this. There had already been a news report on BBC 2 at this point when BBC 1 was transmitting Gagtag. BBC 1 itself displayed a caption on the screen, something like 'News Report on BBC TWO now'.

It's an awkward level of cringe that couldn't be helped - the Gagtag whimsical theme tune and credits, followed by serious news update. This is where the BBC One pres helped to restore a sense of dignity, with the News Report slide and silent globe.
