    i actually think it’s fair for a 12 year old to be learning to tattoo but only on fake skin and stuff. they definitely shouldn’t be tattooing other people or themselves

      I agree... But also, if the client (adult) is comfortable with it, then it's sort of "your body, your choice" to me. Personally, I wouldn't get tattooed by her until she was at least 21, but at that point she'll have roughly 10 years experience tattooing, plus (hopefully 🤞) a few years experience in an ACTUAL tattoo studio

      I wouldn’t want to disagree too much. However, when we enter a tattoo studio, (at least in the uk) the implications are that 2 consenting adults enter a contract which is most times signed with an informed consent form.
      As you agree to be subject of a health procedure which (in rare cases) may lead to serious health outcomes. HIV/hepatitis and or other diseases. Therefore, if we assume a 12 YO not to be able to legally take charge of their bodies and legal status (we don’t let them vote, drive, hospitalise themselves, fly alone, and have sex), then is without saying that they cannot have legal authority on someone else’s body. Furthermore, normally, the insurance policy and the council license are issued to the name of a legally adult person, hence, a 12 yo cannot be in charge of a tattoo gun. Regardless of “my body my choice”
      Would you be happy with a 12 yo cutting you open with a scalpel? I assume you would not be.
      The freedom of choice would apply if the person got privately tattooed in their homes, which are not public businesses. Ciao

      @@artist91fb although I do agree with the liability issue, comparing it to surgery sounds like an apples/oranges argument to me. Again, as an adult, I am (hopefully) free to make whatever choices I want while taking the risks into consideration.

      Idk. It feels like a safety issue for sure. They're using something that can cause serious damage and 12 year olds do not have the capacity to always be careful and cautious. 15/16, sure, 12 not so much imo.

      Most states do allow 12 year olds to stay home alone and even babysit, but that's at their home or someone else's home, not in a tattoo shop (and not while tattooing people!).
      I don't get how she never dealt with CPS or the cops. Parents have had them at their door for waaay less, sometimes for ridiculous reasons (like a 10 year old was in their own yard without an adult and a passerby just assumed that the kid MUST be locked out instead of wanting to do their homework in the fresh air). Meanwhile, this woman literally leaves her daughter alone in a tattoo shop to TATTOO PEOPLE (and has been doing so since she was much younger than 12) and gets away with it?

    Hi, I'm from Germany and can talk a little bit about tattoo rights.
    Children under the age of 14 are not allowed to work in Germany. But that doesn't mean that they can do all kinds of jobs. Jobs that children are allowed to do are for example letter carrier or babysitter. From the age of 15, they are allowed to start an apprenticeship (for example in a craft profession). Children or teenagers have to have gone to school for at least 10 years before they can get an apprenticeship.
    In tattooing it is common, I'm not sure if it is a law, that you can only learn the profession from the age of 18. However, anyone can order a tattoo machine and tattoo themselves at home, but if you tattoo others from home you get a warning and a fine.
    We don't have real tattoo licenses in Germany. However, we do have a health authority that restricts a lot.
    Otherwise, children in Germany are very well protected, and the youth welfare office does a lot to protect children from child labor (Youth Protection Law).

    There's always a point in these situations where I don't feel bad for the clients anymore. There is SO MUCH information and video evidence about Ariel being a terrible tattoo artist with terrible practices... If you don't do the most BASIC research on your artists before you book them, that's on you.
    Kids tattooing clients is beyond insane to me. If you want to let your own child tattoo you, that's your choice. But risking your business, your reputation, or anything going wrong with your clients OR YOUR CHILD? Nah.

    I feel pretty conflicted about this one. On one hand I love that these kids have a creative outlet and are building a useful skill, I really enjoyed Lilly's story as she seems pretty passionate about tattooing and her parents just supported her in that desire to learn. Love when parents support their kids and their passions! I did feel like the girl in the first story wasn't as invested and outright seemed uncomfortable in a lot of the clips. Makes me wonder whether she wants to be there or not. I do think tattoo studios are adult spaces (if only because adults are the primary clientele). I have seen children in adult spaces before, namely wineries and it wasn't a big deal. I think these kids should absolutely be supervised at all times if they are going to tattoo which was another problem in the first story. I feel conflicted. Lily is very talented and is a great artist, and I want to leave space for kids to improve their talents. THIS IS A HARD ONE. Thanks for sharing. 🐥

    I can see why Lilly says that they are a “professionally irresponsible person” - as tattooers or even as tattooed people, Lilly grew up in a time where there was still a very strong stigma that tattooers and tattooed people were considered delinquents and irresponsible. And as tattoo artists, we indulge people’s “irresponsible” behavior. I feel like there is a huge difference in Maya and Natalie’s situations because Maya is treated as a growing artist who looked up to her parents and their profession, while Natalie seems to be in a situation where her mother is just using her.

    Just throwing in my 2 cents. Social media aside. What Ariel does in general is dangerous and putting a child in the middle of that is a terrible idea. In the Lily Lu situation, there is a level of prodigy that's been spoken of that she has surprisingly good control and instincts for it. Also, Lily Lu does crazy stuff at Psyland, but always tries to do it in the safest way possible, like multiperson back pieces, there were wavers and everyone had to get tested for things etc. I have no doubt that Maya learned well, and at this point in her life is a pretty talented tattooer and if she continues will only get better. I'm a musician and performer, we let kids perform and learn those skills that can be a career from early on, in the right, rare, environment I don't see an issue with it. I've actually thought about trying to go and get a Maya tattoo, but I don't know if I'm hard core enough for that trip to Germany.

      Well, I think a tattoo shop is no place for kids and I think the Music and Entertainment Industry should leave kids out of it too. Kids should be going to school, playing with their friends of the same age (give or take a couple of years) and just being the children they are. They shouldn't be exposed to the World of adults.

    I think it’s atrocious to allow children to tattoo in a studio, especially left alone; and you can’t tell me that little girl is the one who took the Blood-born Pathogens test either SMH ~ at least LiliLou has several people always around his daughter & her ink doesn’t look as dug into the skin as the TikTok lady.
    Either way, it’s crazy, unsafe & should not be allowed. 🐥

    germany has pretty much no requirements for tattoo artists at all, other than having a health departmenr "license" which has nothing to do with tattoos at all. Germany still sees tattooing as "bodily harm" as its stated in the criminal court, but its legal as long the person who is getting tattooed consents and as long as the tattoo artist doesnt do an AWFUL job. There isnt even a minimum age to get tattoos. You just have to be at "sound mind" according to law, but that is not directly legally tied to any age. Its a mess :D

    It is really dangerous to allow a child so young to operate machinery. I don't agree with it AT ALL. It's so dangerous and 12 y/os just are not as responsible as adults. Also, a 12 year old should not be working, period. Idgaf if it's legal or not. It's messed up. And leaving a 12 y/o alone with an adult stranger getting a tattoo is beyond messed up. Plus, she not only has told the whole world where her daughter works but also now where she lives. Mother of the year here...

    Why happens if there is an emergency and the client passes out? Can a child handle that alone or what if a client gets belligerent? You are leaving your kid alone with a stranger in a situation that can go sour quickly. People pass out, bleed profusely, vomit or even poop themselves while getting tattooed and I doubt the child is certified to clean up these things or know what to do.

    one, i laughed when ariel said '"you'll know everything!" about her class but cut to the class and the ~students~ aren't even wearing gloves. two, as far as children tattooing, i think it's fair to start teaching a child to tattoo if they're actually interested but tattooing on real people shouldn't be allowed until they're legally an adult. i also worry about the social media aspect of things because you're setting your own child to have a certain reputation, good or bad, which is very influential to how they'll be perceived for the rest of their lives. look at how long it took rebecca black to reinvent her image and she asked her parents for a music video!

    I feel like if her child was under the care of an ACTUAL tattoo artist that has the skills and knowledge then I don’t think I would complain that much. I also wouldn’t be mad is she was trained the right way. Like she should be drawing ALL DAY, practicing techniques like line pulling, different types of shading, taping up the pencil so she can get used to tattoo grips etc. I feel like since she’s young she could learn SO MUCH it’s just that she’s learning from the wrong person. I hope when she gets older she separates herself from her mom and learns from a REAL artist. Or even save up and go to tattoo school.

    I don't see the problem in a minor learning to tattoo. If they are not charging for it and are applying proper safety measures, I think it should be supported. It's not really work if it's a hobby and is not monetized. Some musicians charge for their music, but no one is going to call a child playing a piano "child labour", and there's no reason for it to be different with tattoos. Also, if the child is with the client, she isn't alone. The client could be a bad person, but they are unlikely to do something in a monitored space like a studio with security cameras while also being filmed for social media. When I was twelve, I was not always supervised by family members in all scenarios, nor did I always had an adult present. I don't know how normal this is in the US, but I would say it's normal in most places and children can be independent in their activities provided that they are responsible enough and these activities don't pose disproportional risks. If she practiced for a long time before being unsupervised, she probably has knowledge enough to do it safely. Children are not idiots. They are not capable of making certain life decisions or being fully independent, but that doesn't mean that they are incapable of mastering a hobby, having responsibilities and overall doing a good job in something that is complex and requires fine skills.

    • @qryptid
      @qryptid Před 5 měsíci +7

      It's not about a kid doing a hobby, the "hobby" is repeatedly stabbing a needle into someone's skin. This kid could give someone skin infections if she's following her mom's hygiene practices. This is a little kid doing permanent body modifications. If you wouldn't let a 12 year old do surgery why would you let them use a tattoo gun on someone? Practice skins exist for a reason.

    As an artists myself I always feel it a big responsibility changing ppls body for the rest of their lives. It’s not the type of responsibility a child can carry or even understand. It’s not something to be taken lightly and I think the way these children are now being put into that position is the opposite of teaching them that responsibility. It’s teaching them that it’s just fun and popular on TikTok. Furthermore, dealing with unhappy customers or mistakes is really stressful (as any artist might know) and imo children are not yet able to deal with that kind of stress. A huuuugge no no for me

  • @Bewilderebeest
    @Bewilderebeest Před 5 měsíci +2

    I don’t think minors should be allowed to tattoo. There are significant health risks to both the tattooer and the client … and children/youth do not have the more advanced understanding and judgement that adults do. Blood-borne pathogens are real and not always easy to treat. I can’t imagine increasing a child’s risk of a life-long illness by letting them tattoo (especially unsupervised!!!!).
    I also think that it’s important to not take away from other significant aspects of child development, like school, friends, physical activity, and hobbies. Don’t exploit your children for labour or social media fame/money. Let them be kids.

    Tattooing is such a delicate art and we should treat it as such. Especially with tattoos becoming increasingly more popular we should care who is tattooing us. One of the reason I wanted to get into it is because I’d never want to injure someone but beauty through pain is what I’m all about. I see the same gentle nature in celle she care about her clients some people just think tattooing is cool . I unfortunately don’t have enough money to learn tattooing but I still believe you can’t just pick up a gun and start you should have some basic art skills and classes here are like 3000 dollars so the 60 dollar class thing is insulting and a joke. Because I can’t tattoo rn I just work on perfecting my art and style that’d d like to bring to the field. Not everyone should be tattooing leave it to the professionals .

Leaving them unattended while they tattoo an actual human being at 12 years old is actually insane to me. Let her make her art on fake skin amd work up to clients when she's like 16 maybe.
    And the 3 hour $60 class sounds like so much fun, however I would never claim that it's all you need to become a tattoo artist. That's ridiculous considering there's one mentor and what looked like multiple students at one time. They're not getting the one on one training and taking the time to gain experience. Learning actual techniques and rules of sanitization takes so much more than a 3 hour class
