I'm a tattooer from NY. Was tattooing in the city during pretty much all this and know many of these people personally. This barely scratches the surface. He's a deeply abusive and exploitative boss, his artists get tiny fractions of the exorbitant prices he makes them charge, and he hires international artists so he can control their green cards. His corporate, soulless minimalism has infected the NY tattoo scene with endless money hungry copycats making endless identical, artless, minimalist shops, scavenging the clients who want Bang Bang tattoos but not Bang Bang prices. I cannot describe the number of times myself and my coworkers were told we MUST duplicate $1500 single needle tattoos with the constitution of a spider's web, all for $180 ($90 once the shop took its cut), and god help you if you told the client the honest truth of how these things would look in 3 years.
Im not even from NY, or the us and my old mentor definitely follows this bang bang model in a pretty poor country. He just targets international clients so he can use them as contacts to travel to Europe or whatever. But the shops here in the Cape Town scene has reworked so many of his tattoos because he tattoos so light, they basically fade. I just didn't like how he started ignoring his local clients and prioritized international clients with more money, in such a suck up way. Anyways, bang bangs influence is far and wide unfortunately.
I'm from nyc....he sucks
â@@mialeroux2943 howzit!!
Unfortunately, the tattoo scene has been infected by souless wannabees and copycats - clients AND "artists". Just my opinion.
Thatâs honestly horrifying. As a tattoo artist in the Midwest, Iâve always been taught to value honesty and being upfront with my clients. If I were to ever do a fine line or minimalistic tattoo and NOT tell the person before that this tattoo will probably heal bad, one Iâd feel awful because the client has a right to know, but also Iâd be outcasted.
Just because you tattoo famous people doesn't make you a famous tattoo artist. Never heard of this guy. I don't care who you tattoo I care about what you tattoo.
THIIIIIIIS. You stole the words right from međ
Exaclty... he's a famous person who happens to do tattoos, not someone who's famous for his tattoos.
exactly
2.4 mill followers? I would say a lot of people know who he is.
Superman logo is a major red flag, then bought their stuff online. GRIFTER
Whenever I get tattooed I stare at the art and decoration of the studio to get my mind of the pain, especially if I canât use my phone. Having to stare at white walls for hours and just hoping that the artist quickly finishes would drive me insane
Exactly what I was thinking! I'd get bored so quickly
Being tattooed in basically a dentists office sounds like a nightmare to me. I like the dark grungy lighting, art covered walls, and loud rock music that you get with typical tattoo shops
Hadnât think about it but youâre so right, this just sounds like a helluva expensive migraine.
Screams obnoxious
If I went into a tattoo shop that didn't appreciate art enough to put it on the walls, why the hell would i go in and get their art on my skin forever?
I think he just did it to be a 'pick me' cause 'I'm not like other tattoo artists' so his shop can stand out.
Itâs that most tattoo artist become tattoo artists just to tattoo not because theyâre artists who like to create art or have a passion for art . One time I went to a tattoo shop to get a tattoo and asked a tattoo artist for advice on how to make a good tattoo apprenticeship portfolio to get a apprenticeship , and I asked what I could do to make my portfolio stand out . He told me he never made one which was a shock to me because I wondered how he wounded up getting an apprenticeship. The shop was just like bang bang tattoos there was no art on the walls whatsoever , just certificates which bummed me out because looking at tattoo flash always inspires me when it comes to creating designs. Before the tattoo artist even tattooed me he just traced every part of another clientâs tattoo design including the filigree .
I only have one tattoo but the shop i went to was decorated with Asian and edgy style tats. I was entertained for hours looking at the art. Idk why you would want something that plain. It gives the nice and save feeling.
It makes sense that bang bang opened a shop surrounded by luxury brands. He is the luxury brand of the tattoo world. Insane prices that are apart of the social clout and are not representative of quality. Heâs catering to the same clientele that care about the branding not the artistry
damn, luxury brand of the tattoo world is so apt
Rather than just luxury brand I would say heâs the Supreme of the tattoo world - heâs a direct result of social media driven flex culture.
Itâs just capitalist speculation, why would u pay the price of a quality bodysuit for a average sleeve? Be free under consumption.
@@biazacha exactly!!

Maybe my opinion might be unpopular, but it really rubs me the wrong way knowing that Bang Bang charges outrageous prices for tattoos that are going to age badly. I've heard of so many people that are covering up Bangs Bangs work because its aged badly. There are so many excellent unknown artists out there that don't nearly recieve the same attention as a mediocre artist like Bang Bang. Not saying that artists shouldn't charge their money's worth for their talent and skill, but there comes a point where it gets absurd. Thank you for making this video Celle.
That could be a great follow up video! Work like his then vs now
Why would that be an unpopular opinion. Sounds bang on to me! đ
Sorry, couldn't resist đ
nah you're totally right. i love celle but she's far too nice haha. bang bang is essentially a scammer and good artists and informed clients avoid people like him like the plague.
It's kinda like fashion brands tho, he's raised the price to be what rich people expect whether it's good quality or not and non rich people that can't just throw away money the same way realize it's not worth it
@@Shyknit Yes exactly, it's the tattoo equivalent đ«Ą
imagine spending hours in a sensory deprevation tank having needles jammed into you and paying enough money to build a house
for a tattoo that will look shit in 5 years? Nah!
Why do his tattoos age badly ?
@@flyingplantwhale545 He does micro tattoos, and they just age badly. All tattoos fade, but the thin lines fade a lot over time. There are some artists that specialize in micro tattoos where they fade nicely, like Pony Lawson, who has the technique nailed down, but most micros aren't that quality.
My first tattoo was done by Georgia Grey at Bang Bang. She is an amazing artist, itâs just a shame she works at this studio lol. It was $400 and a tiny little olive branch. I love the tattoo, but 6 years and about 25+ tattoos later, itâs definitely waaaaay overpriced for what you get. I believe artists should get paid well for their work but what Bang Bang has done honestly feels like robbery đ
This is the artist I planned to get my next tattoo done by! Iâve been waiting because I got pregnant and have been breastfeeding so I was waiting for that journey to end and always had this planned in my mind. I honestly had no idea this shop was such a âbig dealâ and that the prices were that crazy. Iâm so crushed right now because I really love her work and had a beautiful tribute tattoo for my mom who passed away planned in my head.
@@Momba_Jules sheâs absolutely wonderful and does incredible work! I would really like to get more done from her too but I believe she now has a $1000 minimum which is just insane đđđ if/when she leaves Bang Bang Iâm definitely going to try to get another piece from her!!
Itâs kinda crazy how much what we lack in our childhood, or even just what we perceive ourselves to be missing as children, ends up deeply informing our values as adults.
100,000 for a full sleeve is highway robbery. Wow. I am all for paying someone 10k for a beautiful sleeve but 100,000 is insane. INSANE.
Google lil uzi verts tattoo. Your brain will implode
It's not crazy or insane if someone is willing to pay the price.
Sometimes tattoo âcultureâ seems like high school 2.0
Also, alot of tattoo artists in NYC end up tattooing celebrities, they randomly pop into shops all the time. But those same artists donât charge outrageous amounts because of it
I recently got a tattoo from an amazing artist, while in my 6 hour session we where chatting and we came to the topic of âcelebrity tattoo artists.â
She told me about a client of hers that got a tattoo from Bang Bang. Hereâs the story: he went to Bang Bangs studio and wanted to book a tattoo with the man himself. He started speaking to the receptionist asking if Bang Bangs books are open and when he would be available to tattoo. The receptionist said âoh heâs actually available right now what do you want to get tattooed?â He answers with âwhatever Bang Bang wants to tattoo on me.â Then he asked how much a session is going to cost, he doesnât get an answer. So he goes to get the tattoo.
The first red flag was that Bang Bang was tattooing 2 other people at the same time. Obviously different beds and machines though keeping track of constantly changing gloves to avoid cross contamination. Dude goes in to get the tattoo anyways and ends up with a palm sized rose tattoo. (Pretty boring choice if your client gives you free reign but whatever) Our protagonist goes to pay, the total amount is $700 dollars. For a palm sized rose. Well he canât refuse to pay and begrudgingly does so. (For more context 700 dollars is equal to over 100 000 of my countryâs currency.)
My artist also told me it was a pretty mediocre black and grey rose tattoo too.
Not telling the client the price of the tattoo (not even around what price point is, for example my artist told me it was going to be around 120 and 130, it ended up being 125) is a huge red flag for me. I get the appeal to get tattooed by someone who did celebrities' tattoos, but that sounds like a scam, imo.
Yeah, but the client is also responsible!
He decided to tattoo his body without knowing the price, the size of the tatoo, the number of colors on the tattoo, etc.
His experience is the consequence of his own irresponsable choices. It's a logical karma.
700 for a palm size rose is def on the expensive side but not unreasonable
I know plenty of artists who charge that amount.
This man legit should have asked him directly how much it will be when he was getting stenciled (sometimes the receptionist doesnât know)
But also as a tattoo artist I have when clients give you free reign then asks how much it will be !
It will depend on the location, design etc etc đ
So asking âhow much it will beâ
Without a design or reference images js actually insane to me - we arenât mind readers
Thirdly - thereâs a tattoo artist armi James charges $1000 just to get a booking with him - so $1000 for the first hour !!
Now for me thatâs outrageous đź so in hindsight 700 for palm size tattoo is not crazy for a celebrity artist .
â @@BlackKoshka23
as a tattoo artist I hate when clients give you free reign then asks how much it will be !
It will depend on the location, design , details etc etc đ
So asking âhow much it will beâ

I donât understand why the client didnât ask him directly how much it was as he was showing him the design / stencil
This client obviously just wanted a tTtoo from him.
Chris Nunez and Oliver Peck did a video reviewing celeb tattoos and one of them said they think celebs get notoriously bad tattoos bc they don't want to wait to get on someone's books, they want to get work done immediately. And since most good artists have a decent wait list, celebs don't go to them.
Bang Bang's story seems to confirm this - I don't really know enough to comment on his quality of work but being willing to tattoo at the drop of a hat is clearly what he prioritized to stay the go-to celebrity tattoo artist. Also makes sense he's banging out basic stuff for walk-ins - he can't take on more serious work if he needs to stay available.
Hey celle, I just wanted to point out that the mic you are using is a "side-address" mic, rather than a "front-address". That basically means that the way you have it right now it's pretty much pointing to the side, rather than towards you.
That said, not having the mic directly close to your face does result in a less direct sound, which is also nice. I just thought I would point it out in case you wanted to try a different angle! :)
the more ya know!
DO NOT buy that ink. They're counting on lots of people buying it "just to see" because they're not actually saying anything real about it online, and then they get to pocket all that money from the suckers. It's a gimmick and yet another scam.
Youâre right, I hope she doesnât fall for it even if itâs âjust to seeâ what itâs like and make us see too. It gives super scammy vibes.
Saw him respond to a comment saying it's the only ink made to be tattooed into skin and other inks are using printer ink.
â@@jackystar5099If you delve into the research, you'll find that this is actually the first ink ever engineered specifically for in-skin use. All ink should prioritize safety like this. Many artists overlook ink safety, so the responsibility falls on ink companies. It's common for artists to reuse ink that's marketed for single-use only.
I really hate the white walls in his tattoo studio. I only have one tattoo on my leg as of yet, and i was really nervous, but when i arrived and saw all the artwork on the walls and decorations i calmed down so much. I cannot imagine going into a shop with such a minimalist decore with nothing else to focus on but your tattoo.
Itâs interesting that he said âless dark skinned people get tattooedâ because I have been looking for a place to get tattooed here in NY and a lot of popular ones donât feature dark skin đ€Šââïž Iâm not going if there is no evidence of experience with my skin tone.
Its also crazy because literally 90% of the NBA and NFL are Black men covered in tattoos. So whoever says dark skinned people donât get tattooed is so stupid đđ
Artists that say that just don't know any artists skilled enough to work on different skin tones đ it's sad that he's putting it on the clients when it's honestly a lack of skill in the industry. I hope you find your artist!
Part of me wonders if thatâs the intention sadly
Thereâs RihannaâŠ..
@@nikkismith2858 if sheâll tattoo me Iâll let herâŠâŠ but side note, Iâm actually much darker than Rihanna
thereâs a korean artist iâve followed for years and my heart genuinely dropped when i saw that he took a job at bang bang nyc. i fear that if he ever leaves BB NYC, his prices will never drop : ( đ„
i believe i know which artist you mean idr his name rn but i absolutely feel the same i dont think his prices will go down again.. if you earn so much you probably don't want to go back to less...
Heâs great & tbh should be congratulated on the job. This is a luxury tattoo brand in 1 of the most expensive cities on earth. I know these prices seem wild, but folks here can & do pay them. So⊠capitalism? đ€·đŒââïž
â@@scarletsletter4466 I don't think someone should be congratulated when they enter an unhealthy work environment.
I really hope he doesnât start a trend because Iâm saving for my next ink and am between 3 SK artists⊠it used to be 4 but no way Iâm going to pay the BBNY price range. :(
I matched with Keith on tinder a while back. Didnât really know who he was, looked him up, saw he had a wife and kids. So, thereâs thatâŠ
Is this 100% not an open relationship? Just saying because I saw two of my professors on tinder and people told me, like a year later, that indeed they were non-monogamous
I mean there's really no way to know if that was actually him or not, it doesn't take much to get some photos off of google and make a fake profile
@MM-uw5tt You really need to do something about your naivety.
@@Shrimp_Insurance Yeah that's how I got matched with "2 famous football players". Luckily I recognized them so I knew it was fake. I doubt famous people would use Tinder. Instagram seems to be a thing though.
@@Maialeen you need to do something about being so close minded
I remember being in high school and finding his book in my local library. I was convinced that he was the pinnacle of tattooing and wanted so badly to be tattooed by him one day.
It wasn't until I became an adult and looked back at his and his team's Instagram accounts when I realized the pedestal I put him on was completely asinine.
The shop being "about the art we're making not the art we've made" is the most pretentious thing. It feels more like them saying they're too good to have to advertise their work.
Also, Wong's issue with dark-skinned work not being featured can be such a self-fulfilling prophecy. Tattoos look different on different skin tones, if you have darker skin and people with the skill to tattoo your aren't advertising that fact then you don't know where to get a tattoo that will show up well. If Wong's IG showed darker-skin work it would result in more work from people with darker skin. That's how advertising works.
I wouldn't go to a tattoo artist used by celebrities because for some reason celebrities tend to get the worst tattoos. I don't know why, but they do.đ„
My theory is that they live their day-to-day lives in an echo chamber so their intuition about what is and isn't a good decision has dulled over the years. They tend to be surrounded by clout chasers that are "yes people" through and through so they may not have heard "I don't think this is a good idea" for so long. People will just hype them up to no end instead of being honest, good friends because they can't jeopardize the connection in Hollywood. Also why naive celebrities get roped into scammy projects like NFTs and crypto so much. At least that's what I think.
He's "Famous" because he tattoo's famous people but 90% of people don't know who he is.
hes got lots of followers, but yeah people don't know who he is...lol
Call me broke all you want but not a god damn soul on this Earth is a good enough artist for me to pay A HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS for their artwork to be put on my body.
Nah ur so real for this, I donât care if that mf is Leonardo da vinci himself
I'm no lawyer but I'm pretty sure a non-compete doesn't hold up if it stops someone from being able to earn a living.
They can't be forced to relocate and are within their rights to find work within their skillset
Company I worked for doing IT tried this, very illegal.
đ„pleasee try out the magic ink, maybe you could test it out on those fake skins since the lack of ingredients listed is definitely sus lmaođ„
awesome video as always, Celle!!
The first time I heard of Bang Bang was a video of a girl showing her tattoo from him a year later. It had faded quite a lot more than it should have even with her applying sunscreen to the tattoo specifcally(you could see a pale spot around the tattoo like she reapplied there more.) Luckily they said they would do a touchup for free since even they didnt expect it to fade that much
the studio looks so clinical, I wouldn't feel comfortable getting inked there
My assumption about the NDA actually has to do with the celebrity clients. If the tattoo artists spill info about celeb private conversations at the business, it could tank their reputation/business?
I definitely would not want to be tattooed by him. He seems like a con artist extraordinaire. I would want to work with a artist that I respected and loved his or hers art. He makes the tattoo gate fiasco seem like a walk in the park. Great video as always Celle. Hope you are having a great day.
What's tattoogate?
As someone with a degree in illustration, whenever I look at those guys I'm like... Ehh. I know at least 5 people in my area going for the same style but hitting that quality for way less money. If people cared to do some research they'd know they can get either the same or better quality for 1/10 of the price :) but yeah it's in the name for them anyway
Something Iâm struggling to understand is why someone who used to watch their momma cry over money then goes on to charge tens of thousands of dollars for a tattoo that may or may not last. Doesnât seem very inclusive to me when heâs pricing out the people who are in the same position he was once in..
Probably lacks empathyđł
he lacks morals and ethics...
From what I've seen, people usually overcompensate as adults for things they lacked when they were young. This also ties into his promise to his mother to make as much money as possible, as was mentioned in the video. People who go into the tattoo business prioritizing or only thinking about money over art are most often the ones who charge outrageous prices for average quality tattoos. He doesn't care about the art or the community, he only cares about the money, and he's made that pretty clear imo
This doesnât make sense to me. Iâm not validating his business choices, but tattoos are a luxury and no artist is obligated to devalue their skills in order to accommodate people who otherwise couldnât afford it. At least with his current rates, heâs basically guaranteed only to be screwing super rich people which I honestly donât really have a problem with.
@@spicypillow I don't think he is just screwing super rich people. Also, he is creating a dynamic around tattooing that just isn't what I recognise. Obviously he CAN use whatever business model he likes, but the vast majority of tattooists don't work like this - the super expensive ones produce bespoke really beautiful pieces that have taken a lot of time to produce, the more every day ones knock out a variety of stuff with varying degrees of skill, at reasonable prices for their customers.
He exploited the ' dumb celebrity' model, but has filtered down to more regular people. The trouble is that when you attach glamour to anything it becomes more valuable. And some of those people really will believe that they will get a better tattoo. When they have they realise they don't.
You easily have the best rendition of the sacred heart tattoo that I've seen. I love the placement on your upper arm.
I remember falling hard in love with that lion finger tattoo when i was younger and desperate for tattoos, only just old enough to actually get them done. Thank god the parlors i went to kindly but firmly told me no when i tried to get it done myself
I remember thinking it was a little sketchy that the shop was charging such exorbitant prices without any sort of education about how fine line micro tattoos would age. To your point, itâs fine if youâre aware of how itâll last and are ok with it, but the young people that followed the celebrities to Bang Bang didnât realize it, and I would have liked to see more care from the shop.
I did want to get tattooed by one of the other artists at the shop who does really incredible florals, but prices START at $4k for a piece (not a sleeve) and I just⊠canât. Even though I really donât mind paying for good tattoos and could probably get $4k together and would never regret the piece, I just really get the sense that the shop is overcharging (so my artist has to overcharge) and I had to come to grips that itâs out of my budget at this time. For $4k I could fly to several other countries and get multiple tattoos! I secretly hope this artist leaves Bang Bang and at a different shop so I can try again though
Iâm 44 so started getting ink well before the phenomenon of celebrity tattooists, thank goodness. My first tattoo at 27 was a brown and gold key with a Welsh dragon curled around in the filigree of the handle. The artist designed it for me himself and each time I go to get new ink from someone I ask if it needs touching up (itâs on my back and not the easiest for me to see) and each time Iâm told itâs bearing up really well⊠itâll be 20 years old in 2027 and itâs still sharp, detailed and beautiful. Thankfully there are plenty of good, decent and moral tattoo artists out there.
For me part of the tattoo is about energy. Art is about energy in general. Why anyone would want somebody's shithead energy tattooed into their skin is beyond me.
Paying thousands of dollars for a small micro tattoo that won't even last is absurd. Paying $10,000 and up for a tattoo is just insane. I knew Cara Delevigne's tattoo would fade (knuckles & hands tend to fade more than some other areas) but it looks even worse than I thought it would have! Honestly I was never super impressed with Bang Bang's work, yes he's talented, but I think there're far more talented artists out there that don't charge a fortune, will last, and aren't problematic. Even back when I watched him on Inked, he rubbed me the wrong way and I didn't get why he was such a big deal.
Him dropping out of high school makes so much sense, anyone who got through biology class would be able to see how obvious the magic ink scam is :/
While it would be interesting to see what the âmagic inkâ is. I wouldnât condone putting money in his pocket
I appreciate how heâs clearly trying to redefine and be a trend setter towards changing the tattoo industry, but I feel like he had a serious ego problem and takes himself too seriously or sees himself as a god or something. He doesnât seem like a kind person. You probably shouldnât get his magic ink because itâs probably just more overpriced junk.
You did a great job presenting this information in an unbiased way btw, great video
Testing the "magic ink" would be cool. I wouldn't necessarily want you to support it by ordering some, but comparing it directly in person to UV ink like you mentioned could be worthwhile. It could also make for good content!

Not me knowing absolutely nothing about any of this⊠I fell in love with an artistâs style and she works there and for the last couple years have been planning on going there to get my next tattoo (after Iâm done breastfeeding my baby). SIGH⊠So upsetting.
Business girl here. An NDA is normal for many businesses, especially ones that deal with celebrities. Itâs not weird or abnormal at all. Non compete clauses are normal too. Usually they have a set limit though.. for example they would have to work there for a year or so before being able to tattoo somewhere else. Thatâs really normal as well. Itâs also normal to have a non compete clause for opening up their own shop.
I was tattooed by an artist down in South Carolina who did some work on Nikki Six... it's the worst tattoo I have on my body đ

Great video Celle. Bang Bang needs to change his business model to Ding! Dong! Seriously.
The fact the magic ink doesn't list any ingredients is a red flag surely. You need to buy a tube and test it out đ„
I think what he means by "rewriting tattoo" is maybe smth like Bob Jones done, that he layered extra design lines with UV ink over normal tattooâŠidk. Looked dope tho! But yeah, "magic ink" formula exists for a long time.
Please try out the magic ink đ„đ„
đ„ I am curious about that âmagicâ ink but I wouldnât want you to waste your money!
đ„Yes to the magic ink, if it becomes available
Please pre-order the magic ink! Iâm so curious
đ„ I would not get a tattoo by some celeb artist just because he's famous, when every city has a lot of wonderful (and sometimes underrated) artists who ask for realistic prices for their beautiful work. I'm not interested in his "magic" ink, I'd rather you using that money to get something more useful or that brings you moer joy.
I remember the controversy from a few years ago đ„
Just like you said even if i had that much money i still wouldn't get tattood by him
It makes a joke out of 'A cheap tattoo isn't good, and a good tattoo isn't cheap'. Personally I wouldn't pre order the Magic Ink on principle. Just do a video on other people's opinions. But that's just me.
Well, this is how far a good tale gets you.
I respect his incredible achievements, rising from nothing and becoming renowned in his field. Hope he helps out his mom, if sheâs still alive. Apart from that, his work is very good, but quite expensive. With his clientele, I suppose money isnât the object, as some of them are very wealthy.

Would be dope if you did a video on the tattoo artist Ganga
I just want to say your videos are awesome. When I first came across your videos I was really shocked that a soft spoken young woman was interested in tatts. I don't remember you having any tatts at the time (but that could just be my shocking memory). Anyways, over time I've really come to respect your appreciation of the art and your informed critiques of the industry. I'm 46 and when I got my first tatt there weren't many women tattooing. If you did come across a female artist they were really tough and agressive, I guess they had to be in order to survive the industry at the time. It's so good to see the younger generation coming up with confidence in themselves and encouragement for other female tattotist. I'd be happy to get work done by you. The lady who did my 2nd tattoo scared the shit out if me! Lol. And I'm a chick! đ
đ„ pls buy the ink lol Iâm super curious about what it turns out to be đđ
