Great video and conversation. I only use 3DC for photogrammetry sculpting and clean up but fell in love with the tools and voxels. My only complaint is that you have to be on top of your layer management in 3DC. VR sculpting seems very interesting.
I took Anton's paid tutorial on creating a big mech robot. I always learn a lot from him, but his layer management skills are amazing. I don't even really worry about them until they get past that 4x mark. Then I just step them down or ghost stuff I am not actively working. Its a balancing act but once you get use to it and everything is second nature.
I know this is an old post but, this is an amazing video. I was wondering if you could share the name of the revolve addon. And if it exist for blender 4.1? Thanks
The Jama's addon Quick shape is like a low poly and more simple version of 3D coat, is not bad but I guess doesn't work well when you want precise shapes or some details, for example it make strange things many times when you make holes on a surface. And it's not that intuitive to use, I guess 3D Coat is easier to use, and way better in everything, wich is logic, there is a wole team working on it years ago. If you want to make low poly models, of course 3D coat is not your software. 3D coat I think is perfect for making complex designs in a quick way, without modelling, just cutting, drawing and sculpting. Then you can work on the retopology of the object if you need it.
In 3dcoat you cannot move objects in planes (xy, yz, xz). You can only move one axis at a time. This is an annoying disadvantage when managing and transforming multi object scenes.
As a person who values workflow and UX. 3D Coat hooked me and so did Blender. The workflow in Maya and Zbrush just felt uncomfortable. I also found that 3D Coat served as a bridge to an understanding of the whole 3d asset creation pipeline. I think it's interesting that 3D Coat was a bridge to understanding for both of you. One thing that Blender has going for it is the fact it's open-source and it's users also make it. 3D Coat would benefit from getting a few of its power users like yourselves more deeply involved in the testing process. Curves also have a ton of potential.
Great to hear your thoughts, Gavin. Your video introducing 3DC years ago is what got me to buy it and use it. I agree with the need for artist input on 2DC development to take it to the next level. @@The3Dsmash Thanks! Glad to hear that I help introduce you to the program. After this 1,5 months of working with 3dcoat i can surely say, that for sculpting i'm coming back to zbrush. The king is only one on that matter. I don't like 3dcoat for no going back and forth on subdivision levels sculpting like in Zbrush. I can only cheat with reduction or decimation . It makes working less efficient. Also - having 4 milions triangles mesh it was impossible to smooth out parts of the sculpture, because my computer was choking ( threadripper 3990wx, gtx 1080ti, 128 Gigs of ram ). Also i find very unintuitive working on different rooms ( sculpt, retopo, UV ). Sending mesh from one to another is confusing.
