How to play Puyo Puyo - Lesson 1: Concept of making chains

- This is the first video in a series. This video teaches about the basics of playing Puyo Puyo: making chains. The basics is NOT placing Puyos on the field randomly or using Fever mode. Learn how to chain!
I hope it'll help. I've tried simplifying the concept as much as possible. After watching this video, try building an 8 chain or higher! That'll be your homework :P

Played Puyo Puyo Tetris for the first time yesterday and was completely lost on the Puyo side of the game, but i'm addicted so this will help me enjoy myself more! Thankfully I haven't been waiting for Lesson 2 for too long unlike others here.

So the new Puyo vs Tetris came out and I have a child slightly older than this video. My kid is better than me at this. I'm gonna need a part 2
the concept is easy to understand, it's the execution that needs to be work on. personally i think some people have an easier time grasping that part then others. Tetris is so simple though that anyone can do it, though the execution of building flat and fast needs to happen.
lupvirga modern Tetris isn't that simple with srs and things like 4 wide

I've played Puyo as a child since Dr. Robonicks MBM came out, then moved on to the originals. While I played knowing the concept of a 'trigger', I hadn't actually grasped the concept of creating 'new triggers' like you show here. I always had the one trigger I based everything around, limiting my combo to around an 8 chain. Thank you so much for this.

Wow. This and the nexus helped me quite a bit. I was using the "newbie" tactics that you described at the beginning before I saw this video. Now I can kinda make 4 or 5 chains easily. Thanks!

A very good tutorial video. Outlying the basics is what puts most new players off, especially that Fever is the only game they've played and won't change. You've done a really good job on explaining the basics. I look forward to seeing your next video, and those that follow.

Hi there, Herman. There is a game called Judgment by SEGA (the guys who made the Yakuza Saga and Judgment plays just like it), and in the game is the mini game Puyo Puyo. The most advised tactic is the 3 column tower which you feature in your video from the 1 minute 15 mark. I 100% agree that this adds an even bigger luck factor to the requirement which is to win 25 in a row which you need to then have a character called Rulue appear. Before finding these beginner videos I had been using the 3 tower technique for over 32 hours and only managed to reach round 26 once in that time and still never won.
I'm now having to relearn the whole thing all over again without being tempted to quit out and just stick to the 3 tower method. But I know if I can get a consistent method of hitting a 4-6 chain on a regular basis then I can smash the requirement and do so quicker and easier. But the other problem is the AI just doesn't give you time to even practice before it fills your screen with garbage Puyo's.,
Nice, now I won't have to rely on Tetris to beat my friends.
this will be helpful for me, the best I can construct at the moment is a 3 chain, and that's by pure luck

Yeah, I play in normal mode. You see, I wasn't all that good at making large chains becuase i often explode them to soon do to a mistake or getting colors I don't know what to do with. All clearing was the only option i had if I wanted to win without depending on fever. Besides, building on the instant patterns makes up for that lack of speed at the start of the round. None the less, I must thank you for making this video, I understand how large chains are keep in play now.

I like your video! you explained the concept of making combos(my way to say chains) in a simple way. Puyo puyo game are the best puzzle game that I ever played in my life. that game is so good that I'm going to remember puyo puyo in my after-life.

Wow, this was very helpful. I started Puyo with DR. Robotnik's mean bean as a kid, and never thought of it this way. I guess I generally did how people call it, the "stairs" technique. Recently started puyo pop fever for DS and trying to get better XD

was watching this randomly then he pulled up the site and was so confused, then I looked at the date this was posted and it all made sense.

Yay now I don't have to rely on unreliable turnarounds for my stair stack to get 7 chains.
I can't seem to make it past a 5-chain* and I feel like the puyo given never seem to line up well enough for me to make good threes and combos like this. Can anyone help me?
*intentionally more than a 5-chain, without random placement or lucky stuff after 5-chain stairs

Now I can't help but wonder if using all clears to start up an instant chain pattern is wrong. Because I mostly start a 3 or 4 chain into all clear and try to set the new pattern up so that also all clears and repeat. I won many matches using that style of play rather than going for big chains, it's just easier for me.
Uses this video for Puyo Puyo v Tetris. Almost a decent player as opposed to a complete chump I was 15 minutes ago

this is what i just can't understand, i remember i been playing this game on my ds for at least a couple of month, and i nearly broke it, i can't even beat the normal mode, i just can't! this game made me feel that i'm just too stupid to get it. damned game
I just played on luck honestly. All I would do is stack three same colored puyos together and did so for the other puyos and hoped to make a chain
***** yeah, i began playing it using this "method" too, but you can only beat the easy mode like that. later in the game you just can't rely on this technique, and got to learn to make these chains, and i just couldn't get this. and me being the perfectioner and all i tried and tried and tried. ugh, this game drove me sooo angry at myself
Yeah, these methods may end up being a little confusing, but with enough practice, anything's possible. Even I didn't quite get it at first, but after watching gameplay videos, I started to get the hang of it.
+ShininDawg I know when I was 8 it took me 2 month to beat the harahara course on hard mode

What do you do with puyo that don't set up chains? And how do you find triggers in messier chains?
Tail or harass with them, dumbass. Also either build better chains, preferably ones that don't go to the second floor for a 5 chain, or get better at finding triggers

I don't think it's possible to all clear all the time. And even if you're going for an all clearn, I wonder how fast you can do it. (the faster the better of course) Remember, we play with 4 colors online. With 3 colors though, it's really easy to all clear.
