    About This Video
    ----------------------------
The 5th chapter of the figure drawing series with Frank Reilly. It has been a struggle getting all the information about Reilly's method for figure drawing, too little sources and many different directions. I managed to collect as much as I can of his method and put it in one video.
Hopefully you will find it useful. Reilly's method if mastered can lead to a very successful figure drawing process from imagination or memory.
I Hope you find it helpful and enjoyable to watch :)

I studied the Reilly Method with Thomas Fogarty Jr. at the Art Students League around 1986. He was an expert at it, and I learned a great deal from him. I believe his father was Thomas Fogarty, who was also an instructor at the Art Students League. In the early years of the 20th century. He and his colleague, George Brandt Bridgman, were popular and influential instructors at the Art Students' League in New York City. Norman Rockwell was one of Fogarty's pupils. I think that Mr. Thomas of Fogarty Jr. might be a great source of knowledge on the Reilly Method.

The lack of videos on Reilly's method was concerning.. its a very important and amazingly helpful method. Looking for books or info on this method was like searching for a rare diamond. If it wasnt for one of Reilly's students making notes while Reilly's teaching the class we would have lost this method forever. I wish Mr. Reilly wrote a book about it, but he left us too soon at the age of 61.

Very intresting method. I think I'm probably going to practice the Loomis method for a while longer since it's a little more accessible. I think more advanced artists might find it useful, especially when it comes to maping out all the specific landmarks. You also did a great job at explaining it considering you only used notes and drawings from his students as a reference so good job!

Man, look for the ''Mastering Drawing the Human Figure From Life, Memory, Imagination. By Jack Faragasso. His instructor at The Art Students League of New York. Jack studied with and worked under Reilly for many years, is the foremost authority on the Reilly system of drawing and painting.
As a thoughtful and knowledgeable teacher, the author has carefully researched and practiced every phase of the subject. He spent much time in the great museums of Europe and America studying the works of the Old Masters. The author uses many of the drawing and painting principles of the Reilly system, and over the years, he has elaborated upon these principles, and added to them.

There is very little information about it, this is sad indeed!

      @hektor6766 Před 4 lety

@@SalemShanouha I'd say ignore that review. I've looked through the book and it's a very well developed exposition of the Reilly method; in fact, a few reviews saw it as too complicated. But that's only due to the extent the author delves into the method. Female hips are not too full, as one review I saw claimed, but well-proportioned or perhaps even a little slim on the proportional diagram, and it has enough illustration of action poses to grasp the ideas. It's a very worthwhile text.

All these methods can be used to draw any pose. It just depends on how comfortable you are with it. My recommendation is to learn all of them, try drawing the same pose using each method and observe which one gave you the best result and without too much headache. Eventually with practice, you will be able to use parts of each methods to create your own method to draw the figure. Which is eventually what you want to do in order to master your own style.

Is there a method which works also for the body for any angle or pose to get an accurate result? I like more a sketchy style than a foto realistic style. Many thanks :-)

Have you tried the peanut method? Either that or the 5 methods. But the Peanut method is a bot more dynamic. It does produce realistic images but it also can be used for sketching quick poses. My personal advice is always try all of them.. just to get the feel for each one and see which one fits ur style the most. It doesnt have to be one method you can mesh up multiple methods together and make your own as well..

Your tutorials are really helpful but i think you missed the point of the Reilly method...
For example if you watch the example drawings of this method by tim gula, the whole point is observe your model or reference and do gestures with rythm lines. not necessarily accurate to anatomy since it's gesture first. Then accoeding to the gesture or rythm lines you structure and draw detailed anatomy.
What i mean is that the point is design the figure with gesture using (beautiful) rythm lines of your choice. But actually seeing this rythm lines are HARD since it can vary depending on the pose, gender and body type

It's ugly as hell but it makes easier to approach figure drawing.

just draw instead of trying to decrypt a method you know nothing about. You read from wikipedia. it is sad. Also, if you read further, you'd know that Bridgman was teaching anatomy, not a method to draw a figure.
