    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Extra Information & Sometimes Corrections if Needed !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    1:50 I meant Henry the Fowler not Flower but close enough.
    3:08 Bohemian Silesia was at the time disputed with Poland so the zone of control along that entire border was very irregular and fluctuate a lot.
    Also there are a couple of small mistakes in the map which I found out about later, on top of that the color coordination is mostly random, so over all the HRE map is more an artistic representation (which is still fairly accurate) rather than an absolutely accurate map of the HRE in the later 12th century. The map is also representing the HRE after the fall of Henry the Lion.
    5:23 The current pope in Rome was Pope Alexander III
    6:56 The Peace of Venice in 1177 is the same peace we talked about in the Guelphs vs Ghibellines video, as it was this treaty that gave the Italian city states their autonomy. This peace treaty was very big and there's a lot it talked about.
    7:12 Conrad in the mean time got to be the Bishop of Salzburg.
    7:25 Ludwig III divided the control of Thuringia with his brother, Konrad, so he wasn't an "absolute" ruler of the dutchy but he did hold the main title of the Duke of Thuringia so his brother was "technically" subordinate to him and they did seem to over all work together.
    7:50 HRE didn't mint single coinage for the empire, instead various principalities were given the "right of coinage" by the Emperor which meant they could mint and regulate their own coins. Initially this right was given to only ecclesiastical principalities but by the 11th century secular principalities started to get the right as well and later even individual cities. The whole coinage system in the HRE is kind of a mess to understand but when you consider most people never left their home towns the existence of many different coins did not effect these people as much as we might think.
    8:56 There is a whole political reason why Fredrik had the Diet of Pentecost in Mainz specifically. It was a power move to show Conrad that he is the Emperor and that he should not pull any kind of disloyal acts, like he did before with the Anti-Pope.
    9:05 Interestingly the Emperor and his two sons participated in the riding events and the whole diet was cut short when a storm destroyed the wooden church specifically constructed for the occasion.
    9:25 So the HRE was constituted of multiple kingdoms in the high middle ages. Hence it was an empire because it had kingdoms within it. The title of the King of Germany (or the King of the Germans) was the main and most important kingly title in the HRE and therefore it was almost always held by the Emperor or his successors. The title of the "King of the Romans" was created by the Kings of Germany to showcase that they in fact weren't just the Kings of the Germans but also the Kings of the Romans. This way they wanted to symbolize that they are the King of the Romans whether they are crowned by the pope as the Holy Roman Emperor or not. The King of the Romans title was basically made purely due to the dispute between the Pope and the Emperors which technically where sometimes just the King of the Romans as the pope sometimes refused to crown them as an Emperor. Think of the title of the King of Germany as basically the ruler of HRE who still holds power over the country just does not always have the title of an Emperor and therefore holds the consolation title of the King of Romans instead. However, sometimes rulers would hold all three titles at ones, sometimes just one title and they gave the other titles to their kids, etc.
    Hopefully this short explanation made at least some sense of this very complicated mess of royal titles.
    9:40 Basically Ludwig supported the Abbot of Fulda (who was also his vassal or friend or had some kind of loyalty to Ludwig, I am not really sure) to sit on the left side of the Emperor during the diet. This was basically a power move to have "your Abbot" sit near the Emperor while Conrad of Mainz isn't. However, this right (of sitting on the left side of the emperor) was usually reserved to the Archbishop of Cologne who threatened to leave so Ludwig had to deescalate the situation. This whole thing immensely annoyed Conrad because he was in charge of the events smooth procession.
    12:25 Ok so it cannot "kill" you in just one breath per se but it can make you unconscious in just one breath in high concentration which means you then die of suffocation since you can't get away from the area were you took the first breath of H2S. Also you can drown since you know you're unconscious.
    13:35 This is Henry (VII) Hohenstaufen not to be confused with Henry the VII Luxemburg.

      I thought it was always "King of East Frankia" rather than "King of the Germans"? If not, when did they change this and what source do you get it from? I know at least that "King of (West) Frankia" wasn't changed into "King of France" until around 1185, and I thought King of the Romans was the equivalent substitute in the east.

    I guess you could say the nobles who fell were having a...
    “shitty day”.
    The nobles that fell and drowned...
    “ate shit” when they hit the cesspool.
    King Henry must’ve been pretty horrified. He saw some...
    “bad shit”.
    One day, a noble was talking with another noble about the collapsing floor at Erfurt. When hearing how the nobles in attendance drowned in poop from the first noble, the other noble merely shrugged and said:
    “Shit happens.”
    Puns aside, this was a great video! The HRE and Middle Ages are very unknown to most people, so it was cool to take a deep look into a small conflict of this huge and divided empire. Looking forward to seeing more videos!

    There is no " uninteresting " history, and you can show that well. All of the topics in history are valid, but the " popular " ones are events highlighted in education. I could describe it as pophistory, it's not about how influential or how funny or how interesting the event is, but how popular it is in first place. While you highlight niche history.

    clicked on your video by chance, and the intro about your videos not being pushed i found interesting.. remember youtube is highly controlled and whether you like to believe it or not stuff like history and content creators is controlled as well.. what i'm getting at, you were probably being censored and when questioned it they answered in the comments with "must be topic".. right.. i bet they do not like the fact how large your channel is and is still "uncontrolled". ride on brother

    Subscribed to your channel purely based off a recommendation from Oversimplified. I feel it entirely appropriate that a history channel got my approval purely because of nepotism and the approval of another leader whose motives I have no understanding of or care to know.

    Those mooks will honestly never understand how interesting Austria-Hungary and the Habsburg monarchy was. We are just patricians, and that means by definition that we’ll always be the lucky few

    Did this incident change building practices?

    • @MLaserHistory
      @MLaserHistory  Před 2 lety +1

      If it did, no one wrote about it, so we don't know.
      It's weird. Despite so many noblemen dying and it being mentioned in a bunch of medieval chronicles. No chronicle goes beyond the point of the event. Like we don't know what the outcome of it was. A bunch of noblemen dying must have caused some dynastic issues of minor nobility somewhere but no one ever mentioned it. On the other hand, this is not unusual for medieval writers. They often leave out things they don't find interesting and perhaps the petty squabbles of minor nobility over dynastic issues caused by this event wasn't interesting/important enough to write about. Maybe the event even wouldn't have been written about if the king wasn't there. After all, as mentioned in the video. Medieval buildings collapsing due to the weight of a lot of people wasn't actually that unusual.

      @@MLaserHistory So building practices were not changed until the Renaissance or maybe the Enlightenment maybe? I wonder when that kind of thing was studied Europe-wide and then taught to architects and/or builders. When did building engineering become considered a at least a sort of science?

    • @MLaserHistory
      @MLaserHistory  Před 2 lety

      @@skybluskyblueify Yeah, I wouldn't really know about that. I guess a good place to start would be to look at medieval master masons (not masonic societies those are different). But I can't really help further with that.
