Not really, generally the higher ranking the officer the more friendly and well mannered they are. Idk what gives out the stereotype that there are these Col Jessup type of officers and I'm sure there may be a few here and there but the culture of the military doesn't really promote this type of behavior.

That scene is important because when Jack Nicholson embarrasses Tom Cruise by demanding he “asks him nicely” that is when Tom Cruise takes a grudge against him and Jack Nicholson is a marked man.

i feel more than a grudge cruise’s character realizes that as an adversary the colonel has a weakness which was his ego and cant handle being talked down to by those he consider inferior, which is what he used to finally defeat him in court

Jessup really screws up here. Pretty idiotic. He could have just played it cool. Cruise laid a trap and Jessup fell hook, line and sinker. Now it's straightforward. Cruise just needs to do the same thing on the witness stand and he does. Jessup is easily manipulated.

They really don’t make good movies like these anymore. I purchased a copy of this flick and usually watch it on the yearly. It doesn’t get old, and what do ya know, even when I saw this little snippet on youtube, I just had to watch it. Where’s the intensity anymore? Where’s the grit! Well in this movie you’ll find it. Especially in the courtroom scene with ol’ Jacky Boy! What an actor. Notice how Nicholson especially doesn’t blink often when he is performing his lines. Now watch cnn anchors or abc cbs news, eyes blinking non stop. This is a major tell. Confident people talking confidently about X subject matter doesn’t require the thinky blinky I’m obviously nervous routine. Byeee
