  • This is the one hundred and twenty first of the remastered Lorcan Film Unit Videos. There is a total of 10 hours worth of film that we hope to publish over time. Unfortunately Leslie Crowe who was the Director and creator of much of this content is no longer with us. So we are hoping to get your help to figure out the places and the names of the people he captured.
If you turn on the Closed Captions "CC" on the video to see what we know about the footage so far.
If you can help us with any additional information please contact us at lorcanfilmunit@gmail.com

That brought back memories. I think the footage at the end was the prep for John Paul IIs visit. He passed right by Whitehall Church featured towards the end of the clip. My infirm grandmother had to be wheeled a half mile and carried up a flight of stairs just to get a decent view of him passing by.

Shop Street, Galway at 1:23 with Moons (now Brown Thomas) on the left. Eyre Square at 1:46. I'm surprised Leslie did not label these films, as he was so well organised otherwise.

0:28 - the stained glass from St. Nicholas Collegiate Church in Galway city. 2:40 - welcoming Pope JP II to Ireland. "Witaj" means "hello" in Polish :) I remember sitting out in the Phoenix Park for hours on a deck chair when I was 11.

1979 in Whitehall. I saw Pope JP II pass us by on Griffith Avenue purely by accident. 0n the 29/09/1979.
