Aram Ilyich Khachaturian (Արամ Եղիայի Խաչատրյան (Aram Yeghiayi Khach’atryan) /Арам Ильич Хачатурян (Aram Il’ich Khachaturyan) (1903-78) was an Armenian/Soviet composer who blended elements of his native Armenian music with modern harmonies. He wrote music of various genres, and he is best known for his concertos and ballet music.
The film is based on Gabriel Sundukyan’s 1876 play of the same name, and it was directed by Hamo Bek-nazarian. It is set in the second half of the 19th century in Tbilisi, and it tells the story of a poor but honest Armenian fisherman Pepo against a cunning trader Zimzimov. The film premiered at the opening of the “Moscow” cinema in Yerevan. It was well-received both in Armenia and Russia.
This film was Khachaturian’s first experience with cinema music, and he dedicated himself greatly. In order to capture the scenes of later-19th century Tbilisi, the director and composer would listen to performances of folk musicians in Tbilisi and record the melodies they liked.
