- “I hope to spread awareness on the struggles and difficulties that minority groups like the LGBTQ+ community face every day as a result of lack of education. As an educator, I feel it’s my duty to inform communities and be a voice to the voiceless''.
His speech will spark curiosity among people to ask more questions and to do more research before they come to a conclusion. “I want people to question the values and norms of society and understand why they are there and how these values and norms are used to uplift certain people but at the same time oppress others”. Ross Rossouw is a teacher in KCISLK. He is from South Africa and moved to Taiwan in 2015. As time flew by, he began to find the purpose of this trip was not only just to teach, but learn more. His profession as a teacher provides him with the opportunity to inspire young minds, and this also pushed him to constantly seek growth in both his professional and personal life. This event was organized by my school and run completely by the students. Initially it was a closed event, only for students and school staff, but only two weeks before the talks did the school decide to open it to the public, so I'm afraid it wasn't advertised as much. The picture you saw of the empty seats was a slide in my presentation and not the audience I was speaking to.

It was an event run by my school and the students actually planned and set up everything. Initially it was a closed event only meant for students and teachers but only later did the school decide to open it up to the public. By then, there wasn't enough time to do proper advertising. Also, I'm in Taiwan, so not a big English speaking community.

I think it’s amazing you lived through Stonewall, but can you really call yourself a “survivor of the bashings” when no one died? To quote Willam, “Nobody was killed at Stonewall.” You definitely endured something and I’m not trying to minimize that. I just don’t want people to read this and misunderstand the history of the event.

Rephrase the "in the face all the time" maybe, as it sure sounds negative and exhausting, and understandably drags you down. Maybe say it like the dude literally says in the talk: reach a point in life, where we are seen as normal people.
Once it's normal, being in everyone's face all the time becomes a no-brainer. So rather than using bad wording (which is a mental excuse for inaction often), try to be just "in the face of people", not everyone's, at all time, but just "normal" - like straights do mostly.
Just normal.
Both are exhausting - Disappearing and being in others face and costly.
How about just existing and not giving a sh!t what other people think. It's worked fine for me for half a century.

I am 68 years old and, yes, I’m damaged to this day (“permanently”) despite all the changes in our world that have occurred over recent decades of my life. I am of the LGBTIAQ people. Today, for example, I so endorse the inclusiveness that has now arisen, at least within this division of people. However, it should never be forgotten that it wasn’t until 1984 that the illegality of homosexuality was removed from the statutes in NSW (I worked on that campaign), and a fuller law reform did not occur in that state until 2003. Both basic and fuller law reform emerged only on a piecemeal basis throughout the states and territories of Australia. And then, this is only pertaining to the law of course; the rest is even harder to achieve (as this video well captures some of the myriad of other aspects).
When I see worthwhile presentations such as this, and portrayals of other LGBTIAQ matters (along with matters relating to humanitarianism, or considerations of ‘the other’), I often want to ‘show and tell’ to people significant to me. My sister, for example, remains as one of those people (she is the only example of a family member still available to me today). I guess, via this kind of process, I am forever seeking recognition, understanding and ‘validation’ for my ‘outsider’ status. But, doing this is difficult because one just feels as though one is climbing onto a soapbox each time (& that’s not really acceptable, somehow)! There seem to be no solutions.

the malignant mythology of religion and the repression of anyone who is 'different' can be deadly when shame and blame are used to manipulate. Find and be your true 'self'. Orientation is not a lifestyle choice, religion is.
But for the speaker to blame the current totalitarian regimes' rampant bigotry ingrained in radical Islamism in most of the middle east on Western colonialism from hundreds of years ago - while simultaneously overstating the alleged openness of the middle east society prior to colonialism - is simply ahistorical nonsense. It's a prime example of presentism - that is, taking what you want to be true and backing history into that lens while being intentionally devoid of all nuance. This talk was of exceptional poor quality and framing even if you agree with the overall message.
@@backhand4In other words, the militant Islam is their own doing? Of course that's true. Islam is quite abhorrent on it's own and you see this every day. Moderates are just not following the book to the hilt. Just like Catholicism and the now quite insane the evangelical cults. Moderate Christianity is just not following all texts. All the Abrahamic religions destroy knowledge given complete power.
Of course the colonists put in place horrendous laws. All religion stinks.
Listening to woke victim mentality claptrap is also a choice.

I don't even to pretend to understand it, but it seems that Islam is as varied as Christianity and like Christianity there're groups that have opposing views on many things.
I know that in Poland the Muslims who've been living there since at least the 1400's and the Muslims who've moved there recently apparently disagree on many things.

Well said, much needed...but how many will listen? More than previously I hope. Most societies need to change their outlook on LGBTQ+ people, because they are people that should have the same behaviors exhibited to them as non LGBTQ+ people.

Because of our heteronormative society, I grew up in the 80s & 90s thinking I was a broken straight woman. It wasn't until my late 30s that I first heard the word Asexual. It took me until I was 40 to realize I was actually Ace & bi-romantic. More conversations like this need to happen.

Yes, you are right, but if you trace back to the origins of early Christian thought, rejection and criminalization of homosexuality are geographically correlated with it. In very few places was homosexuality a problem until Christianity and then western thinking based on Christianity spread.

Homosexuality as you know it today was not socially accepted in Greek or Roman Societies, and it may have in fact been more accepted in Christian medieval Europe than in classical antiquity. Widepread homophobia and criminalization of homosexuality is a Rennaissance-era idea.

My Filipino Father, an immigrant conservative engineer who had a worldwide Industrial Engineering Corporation who with my modern American born Mother who is understandingly kind who instilled my sense of awareness and self worth which gave me
the confidence to be who I am. Then my 2 sets of Grandparents who has showed me the value of respect with a good dose of humor will lead to an amazing journey. Now at 54, comfortably aging and happy to be where I am in life.

this need for validation he is talking about in a society which claims to favour individualism and diversity comes down to our mores and morals ludicrously out of date with modern standards. why? because most mores and morals go way back and were formed long before our modern laws were introduced, let alone modern concepts like being free of discrimination etc.
sure, mores and morals change but it takes time - we are talking many decades here.
our modern laws get changed all the time but most we adhere today are much younger than 100yrs old while the law itself often is influenced by the mores and morals of the day it was introduced.
discriminating against homosexuals and practically outlawing it climaxed in Victorian times with criminal codes all over the world made in the 1860s. that was a time when modern concepts of basic human rights and liberties had a different ring to it. just remember what was accepted back then (slavery in the US, death penalties all over the globe, no female suffrage etc pp.) - heteronormativity was accepted back then and the christian churches were preaching it for several centuries before. unfortunately, many things the churches preach do not pass modern standards but are very difficult to get rid off. people needlessly suffer for it.
we need to accept the fact that heteronormativity only serves roughly 90% of any population, the rest is left out and discriminating against 10% of any population who can't escape it is neither democratic nor just, sustainable or fair, especially when their needs to live a normal life do not harm anyone. heteronormativity therefore needs to get discarded in all walks of life asap

I find this talk unconvincing. I'm 60 years old and even though underrepresentation was the norm. But zero representation certainly wasn't the case.
Also, colonialism isn't the only reason why homosexuality is problematic in the non-Christian parts of the world. To represent it as such is more an expression of the imperial mindset than the speaker realizes. Other cultures can come up with ghastly outcomes just as easily. Don't deny their agency just because you ruled them for a short while.

I believe that was just a slide in his presentation, meant to illustrate some of his arguments. You can hear the live audience clapping towards the end of his talk.
Yes, that was just a slide in my presentation to represent the stage I "perform" my life on. There was an audience, although not big, but I live and work in Taiwan so the language barrier also contributed to not as many people showing up. I appreciate the support though❤

First of all, thanks for the compliment. Secondly, privilege is one of the numerous topics I discuss in my Grade 12 elective course. If we are aware of our privilege we can use it to do good. I volunteered to do this TEDx Talk and a lot of research and preparation went into it. It was open to anyone and I wasn't chosen😊. If my privilege as a white "handsome" man can get me on a stage to talk about something that matters, I'll use that privilege and do just that❤
