Do We Choose Our Thoughts?

  • "We [eventually] have to come to the conclusion whether we are in the materialist perspective or whether we are in the non-dualist perspective, in both cases we have to come to the conclusion that thoughts are cosmic events. They are generated by a Reality which is bigger than the separate individual we believe to be, and that they are cosmic events like the rain or the snow or a hurricane. And therefore the limited entity that claims authorship of the thought and claims to be the one who has made the decision is an imposter because it claims the authorship of something it has not created. It comes after the fact. It wasn't present when the decision was being made. The decision just came."

Its interesting that people never ask themselves where impulses from the heart come from. For instance a spontaneous impulse to buy an icecream can occur, and people never ask themselves where that impulse comes from. Then through some twisted idea they come to the conclusion 'I' made that decision even though the small 'I' never gave any input. How is it even possible; how did people come to the conclusion there is a 'little me'?
What is also interesting is that this system of receiving urges to explore something and then seeking those things out works perfectly. Then comes along the idea of a small self that has to give input in accordance to beliefs it has, and now you have this constant distortion between impulses and action. An impulse comes, beliefs start distorting a previously clear input, and now there is resistance and confusion.

Many impulses come from conditioning. Eating ice cream is a pleasant activity stored in mental memory. A pleasant activity is one which promotes survival (ice cream has carbohydrates) stored in genetic memory.

Francis Lucille quote highlights from this video:
"Look at the decision-making process. The decision appears after some deliberation or right away as a thought, 'I'm going to do this'. Now, did we choose this thought? Do we choose our thoughts or do they happen, do they arise in us?"
"It is the cosmos in its totality that creates a decision ... The decision is a result of a universal cooperation."
"In hindsight, after the thought came to me, the 'me' as a separate person comes into the picture and claims to have been the decision-maker. I say, 'Well, I've just decided", but, in fact, not so. The thought, the decision, came to me."
    "Our decisions are universal decisions."

We can choose the thoughts that the subconscious produces by choosing the impressions that we permit enter into the inner mind and By choosing the thoughts that we entertain.
By doing so, we make the subconscious to elaborate thoughts about things we want, so it reproduces thoughts about what we want.
We can consciously decide what thoughts will empower in our mind and become part of the inner mind. So our mind will .reproduce the thoughts we want in relation with the various events of the daily life. The mind is playing catch up on events and think's it orchestrating events. That's the basic idea here.

      C) “Im going to eat a banana” (another thought)
      D) “Spirituality is bull of course there’s a thinker”. (yet another thought)
Whether there is what feels like a pop up thought or a conscious thought they are all thoughts which are just perceived - that’s why Francis said that the fake thinker was not there when the thought occurred because the fake thinker’s thought is just another thought that seems to take ownership of the previous thought. Even this feeling of seeming to take ownership is another thought.
For some reason we (as consciousness) for some reason tend to buy into this idea of this chain of apparently connected thoughts being as the result of a separate thinker.

It was a video I watched a few years ago (can’t remember which) in it to a lady’s question Francis said ‘but that is just thought B’. This was a bolt out of the blue for me and since then I’ve loved this idea of there being no chooser and all there is is just awareness of all this. I think going from the stand point of awareness is the fundamental unchanging and everything else is just the changing coming and going of thoughts then it’s cool. Of course there is no entity that chooses to live their lives this way. It feels very liberating, yet again there is no individual ‘I’ that feels liberating - there is just an awareness of feeling liberated.
