Pink Martini presents a new concert favorite featuring NPR's Ari Shapiro, a regular guest of the band on tour. "Et maintenant" is better known in the US by its English version, "What Now My Love," but of course Pink Martini chose to go back to cover the original, in French. Written in 1961 by composer Gilbert Bécaud and lyricist Pierre Delanoë, the music rises through a dizzying progression of key changes, and is directly inspired by Ravel's "Bolero," which is also a Pink Martini concert favorite. This performance, filmed on a rainy day in September 2021, soon after the band started touring again after a long hiatus during quarantine, this performance features a string section from the Portland Youth Philharmonic, along with Pink Martini's regular violinist Nicholas Crosa and cellist Pansy Chang, at the midway point of an epic three hour concert in the band's hometown.

Having been an NPR junkie for a long time, and since Ari became co-host of All Things Considered, a fan of his authentic, meaningful interviews, reporting, etc., I had not been aware of his multi-talents until I listened to Terry Gross interview him on Fresh Air relevant to his recently published memoir. His voice comes from the heart. In a word: Ari is a Mesch!
