New Heroscape's Units Are Different, Here's Why

  • One of the biggest complains amongst Heroscape's die hard "supporters" is that the new units are WAY too different than in the original run. Nobody seems to know why Hasbro would go from such an eclectic assortment of figures to just five factions.
WELL I asked Avalon Hill and here's what they told me!

Definitely worth figuring out the historical units. That's...a big part of it.

I feel like this interview showcases well one of the biggest problems with the project, in that it highlights the disconnect between the designer decisions and what fans actually want. It's almost like the choices were made behind the scenes without first caring to inquire to what it is that fans really wanted out of a revival.
People who were fans of Heroscape want to relive the feelings they had with the original and the more things you change the less likely they are to be on board. If the game doesn't "feel like Heroscape" then what's the point?
Heroscape's eclectic nature was one of the selling points of the game. Plenty of players WANT to see more historical figures and pop culture knock-offs because it's fun to see how your dinosaur would fare in a fight versus my robot or your soldiers against my medieval knights, etc. At the same time, those players who preferred a fantasy or sci-fi or other niche could simply pick and choose to play with just those units. So in that way it was a game for everyone.
There's a reason the original game focused on pop culture. Because those characters are based on things we can easily recognize and connect with. The new game achieves its goal of having unique factions, but the side effect of these random characters is that we no longer have something we can easily recognize and connect with. So the new units and concepts all blend together instead of standing out to us as recognizable heroes and villains would.
Add to that the fact that the units are unpainted and they really DO blend together even more. I understand from a logistical perspective they might not have had a choice. But it certainly didn't help sell the vision.

This interview bit, Heroscape's motto of Battle of ALL Time, and Dad Scaper's Pride and Prejudice quote are hitting home in trying to help Heroscapers understand this IP is meant to be a massive mix, but it also has to be unique to the brand itself. I can get behind that, and I love the aesthetics behind Noxdorma and Arboreas

I think the new units are amazing. it’s sick they come together as a faction rather then starting with one or two figures in the faction then collecting the rest over time in expansions. I’m sure (if it succeeds) they will release more member of each faction in expansion as well anyways. So best of both worlds

Original IP are HARD to come up with. As for the Zerg comment, NEMESIS WAR BROOD is a bug race yes but they are no Zerg or Tyranids I see completely different tactics here and as a Bug Fan Heroscape should have it's own bugs ( Bug Lovers Unite don't hate or I will Challenge you with my Xenomorph army LOL ) .

I understand the idea of building a new IP, and I am not against new factions. What they came up with, especially the clockwork combine (because I thought they are the worst), was just disappointing, the whole reason I play the game is because it feels like a combination of all my favorite things. I have my historical game, my fantasy game, my sci-fi game and others all in one. (Besides, did anyone notice that in the intro of the video the creator in naming the new factions called one the "Zerg". So much for new IP.

I mean, he kinda did. You can’t really build a brand or franchise off cheap pop culture knock offs.
Painting units is extraordinarily expensive. 71 figures PLUS painted terrain PLUS the walls and trees for $250 is a steal

The brand is HeroScape and it’s a about random units from time battling it out. Not even sure how owning your own IPs has anything to do with the quality of the game. If it’s not what a lot of people wanted, and not what it was before, just make what people wanted.
