Building for Ducks

  • On a slow duck hunt I got Chris to talk about building his duck hole at one of his farms. This is a great example of taking a less productive area of your land that might already have drainage issues, and creating great value. This farm had 3 fields that the previous owners had planted in pines. Chris sheered the pines and put them back into ag production. Then recognized that one field had some drainage issues and was less productive, so he installed a duck impoundment. Besides the obvious benefit of having your own duck hole that you can hunt without the hassle of public land, the added value that created if he wanted to sell it is exceptional.

If want to target woodys specifically ide want acorn trees flooded. A cornfield will get mallard with occasional woodys. Flooded oak trees will get woodys with occasional mallards.

@@wholeass83 flooded hardwoods does attract wood ducks. It is surprising how may wood ducks we see in this flooded corn hole though. When we have a large push of ducks this spot will fill up with teal and mallards.

@woodsmanperspectivepodcast I swear I thought flooded cornfields were myths until I found one right after this season ended. I'm hoping it's still flooded next season. It's public land too. Absolutely loaded with mallards and the bean field next to it geese
